Constitutive Variation in Hepatic Expression of Porcine Innate Immune Genes Associated with Novel Promoter Polymorphisms By Heindrich Nicolaas Snyman A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Science Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Heindrich Nicolaas Snyman, November, 2013 ABSTRACT CONSTITUTIVE VARIATION IN HEPATIC EXPRESSION OF PORCINE INNATE IMMUNE GENES ASSOCIATED WITH NOVEL PROMOTER POLYMORPHISMS Heindrich N. Snyman Advisor University of Guelph, 2013 Dr. Brandon Lillie Infectious diseases are an important factor limiting production, growth performance, economics and animal welfare in the global swine industry. Numerous pathogenic, environmental and host genetic factors contribute to infectious disease susceptibility, including defects in the innate immune system. The secreted, membrane-bound and intracellular proteins of the innate immune system are critical components in the defense against infectious pathogens, especially in young pigs. Previous studies have identified a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the innate immune genes of pigs, some of which are more frequent in pigs with economically important infectious diseases such as enteritis, serositis and pneumonia. Additional novel genetic differences (SNPs, insertions, deletions or other genetic variations) that alter the expression and/or function of important resistance-conferring innate immune proteins could, together with previously identified markers, form the basis for future development of genetic selection strategies aimed at increasing innate disease resistance in pigs. In this thesis, genome-wide expression analysis and DNA sequencing were used to screen for polymorphisms that were associated with decreased or increased expression of selected innate immune genes in the liver of healthy market weight pigs.

  • The Political Economy of Marriage: Joanne Payton
‘Honour’ and the political economy of marriage Joanne Payton Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD, 2015 i DECLARATION This work has not been submitted in substance for any other degree or award at this or any other university or place of learning, nor is being submitted concurrently in candidature for any degree or other award. Signed (candidate) Date: 13 April 2015 STATEMENT 1 This thesis is being submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD. Signed (candidate) Date: 13 April 2015 STATEMENT 2 This thesis is the result of my own independent work/investigation, except where otherwise stated. Other sources are acknowledged by explicit references. The views expressed are my own. Signed (candidate) Date: 13 April 2015 STATEMENT 3 I hereby give consent for my thesis, if accepted, to be available for photocopying and for inter-library loan, and for the title and summary to be made available to outside organisations. Signed (candidate) Date: 13 April 2015 Summary ‘Honour’-based violence (HBV) is defined as a form of crime, predominantly against women, committed by the agnates of the victim, often in collaboration, which are justified by the victims’ perceived violation of social norms, particularly those around sexuality and gender roles. While HBV is often considered as a cultural phenomenon, I argue that the cross-cultural distribution of crimes fitting this definition prohibits a purely cultural explanation. I advance an alternate explanation for HBV through a deployment of the cultural materialist strategy and the anthropological theories of Pierre Bourdieu, Claude Lévi-Strauss (as interpreted by Gayle Rubin) and Eric Wolf.

THE CATHOLIC PAGE 3 MBS honored as Blue Ribbon school October 4, 2013 Vol. 51,ommentator No. 17 SERVING THE DIOCESE OF BATON ROUGE SINCE 1963 thecatholiccommentator.org C ‘COMFORT MY PEOPLE’ Bishop Fabre appointed to Houma-Thibodaux diocese By Barbara Chenevert The Catholic Commentator It was a special moment – the sharing of a few laughs and some words of understanding between two bishops, one jovial and vi- vacious, the other shy and soft spoken. “I know a little about what it is like and the Spirit knows,” Baton Rouge Bishop Robert W. Muench told New Roads native Bishop Shelton J. Fabre, who had just been appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. Bishop Fabre, in turn, smiled as he shared his new experience dealing with the press and the Vatican. “One thing you learn is nothing is ever final until it is in writing,” he said with a laugh. The two bishops, who in spite of their contrasting styles share a common bond, met briefly at the Catholic Life Center on Sept. 27. Earlier in the week, Pope Francis appointed 49-year-old Bish- op Fabre, who had been auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New Orleans for the past six years, as the fourth bishop of the Houma-Thibodaux diocese. On a visit to Baton Rouge, Bishop Fabre said the message of Pope Francis resonates with him “personally and with my min- istry as bishop. “The pope is not changing any church teaching. What he is say- ing is we have to speak the truth, but we have to speak the truth in love.
