14 SYMPHONY SERIES 2020 - 2021 LEVI HILL ANNE CATHERINE MURRAY PRESIDENT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Symphony Friends, As you can imagine, it takes months of planning and Thank you for your teamwork to produce our continued support of Season Program Books . In Augusta Symphony, and the past year, we have all welcome to our 66th learned the hard way that season . The British figure the best laid plans often William Morris once said go awry . And so I struggle of poetry, “ . it. is the as I write this letter in late companion in youth of July of 2020, acutely aware desire and love; it is the that by the time you read power which in later years this, our plans may have dispels the ills of life ”. changed yet again . The same can be said of music . At times, it energizes the I’ll focus on what I know to be true . First, the Augusta President spirit and motivates, but then too, it has the power to calm Symphony exists because of its expert and dedicated the restlessness of uncertainty . I believe music to be one of musicians . What a terrible time so many of them have life’s essentials . With the power to span generations it speaks suffered due to loss of work and opportunities to share to the youthful minds of tomorrow while restoring in others what they love to do most! But how resilient they have the joys of yesterday .

shown themselves to be, spending the lockdown teaching • A wonderful and mysterious feature of music is that when virtually, composing pieces shared through social media, and Executive Director listening, each of us will claim a unique experience but that remaining enthusiastic about whatever curveballs get thrown we will also share in a common apprehension of its beauty . I their way . believe this is the pleasure that has us longing to be together . Second, I am beyond grateful for Maestro Dirk Meyer and Together we are music . the staff of the Symphony and the Miller Theater . Together, Levi W . Hill IV we’ve planned and successfully marketed the 20-21 Season, President, Board of Directors only to have to “Reimagine Fall” to accommodate smaller orchestras and audiences . We spent the summer of COVID on a co-branding campaign, “Together We Are Music” that reminded the community that the Symphony and the Miller are one and the same and ready to welcome them back as soon as conditions allow . It has been awe-inspiring to see what develops during our physically-distanced brainstorm sessions in the theater, and I could not be more proud of what we have accomplished together . What motivates us most is YOU, our patrons . We are emotionally invested in sharing the joy of music with all of you, even if it means tossing out one beautifully-designed concert for another smaller, masked, concession-free concert . I can attest that the same amount of passion is infused in whatever iteration you may be enjoying this evening . Thank you for staying the course with us . The Symphony and the Miller are stronger for this experience and because of your commitment to our mission . Anne Catherine Murray Executive Director

14 SYMPHONY SERIES 2020 - 2021 15 16 SYMPHONY SERIES 2020 - 2021 DIRK MEYER MUSIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends, This is certainly a different Welcome Letter than the one I originally planned for our 2020-21 season . In these unprecedented times, a “welcome” wouldn’t seem complete without first wishing each of you good health as we make our way through this pandemic . For many of us this fall will include a brand new opportunity: enjoying a “live” orchestra performance from the safety of your own home . So, wherever you are: Welcome to the Symphony, welcome to the Miller, or welcome at home! Our original vision for the 2020-21 season was quite different, to say the least . And despite all the uncertainties, we are hopeful that the second half of our season may return to “normal ”. But this fall we had to make some adjustments We have also made adjustments to our Pops! season this for the safety and wellbeing of our musicians and valued Music Director year . For the fall these concerts are going digital . Subscribers patrons . to our Pops! and Family Series will have full access to our We have been working diligently to ensure high quality broadcasts of Movie Music Pops! as well as our Holiday orchestral music will continue to thrive in our community – Pops! . even during these difficult times . While orchestras around In the New Year hopefully things have settled to a point the country are cancelling their seasons, we have created where we have the opportunity to finish our season as a concept that will allow our musicians to stay employed, originally planned . With music from Beethoven to Debussy our audiences to enjoy great music, and, most importantly, and from Country to Motown, our spring season includes everyone to be safe . something for everyone . Of course, if there is one thing we By playing repertoire for smaller orchestra we can ensure have learned in 2020, it is that nothing is easy . But we also physical distancing on stage . By limiting audience capacity have learned to adapt and come up with creative ways to we can ensure the same is true in the auditorium . And for solve the challenges we face . So whatever 2021 throws at those who can’t be with us in person, we are offering a live- us, we will be ready and ensure that the music keeps on stream of our performances . playing . I can honestly say I am thrilled about our plans for this fall . Thank you for your continued support during these Despite all the challenges, we get to enjoy our beloved uncertain times . Enjoy the music, wherever you are, and we Augusta Symphony and some of the greatest orchestral look forward to seeing you soon! music: From Baroque masters to today’s cutting edge composers, from Mahler’s epic symphonic vision to intimate Sincerely, works like Mozart’s Little Night Music; our reimagined fall season features amazing music! And, as an added bonus, we get to experience some of our incredibly talented musicians as soloists . Dirk Meyer Music Director
