  • Acceptance Speech by Professor Omar M. Yaghi
Omar Yaghi’s Speech for 2017 Albert Einstein Science Award I want to thank the principals of the World Cultural Council, organizers of the Einstein World Award of Science Prize, and the generous hospitality of our hosts, Leiden University’s executive body, faculty, staff, and students. Please allow me to express my deepest appreciation to Lily Hernandez for her thoughtfulness and dedication to help bring all this together. I am deeply honored to join the ranks of distinguished scholars who were awarded this prize in years past. Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to make the following brief remarks: As a child born to a refugee family, I firmly believe that each one of us is blessed with having an opportunity, a chance, a probability, to succeed in our chosen endeavor. I believe we are born with this opportunity and that we as individuals can work towards capturing it and, if we make the right decisions, we can grow and thrive. In other words, our ability to transform ourselves lies within us. I sincerely believe that this opportunity and the chance to succeed live in all of us. It is part of our DNA no matter who we are and where we come from. In my remarks here today, I wish to say something to those who may face at some point slim odds of success in their life, those who start at the lower rungs of the ladder, and those who experience difficulty and may feel sidelined by life’s twists and turns. I stand before you as a product of those slim odds and of a life of hardship such odds entail.

  • The Bad Ass Pulse by Martin Longley
December 2010 | No. 104 Your FREE Monthly Guide to the New York Jazz Scene aaj-ny.com The THE Bad Ass bad Pulse PLUS Mulgrew Miller • Microscopic Septet • Origin • Event Calendar Many people have spoken to us over the years about the methodology we use in putting someone on our cover. We at AllAboutJazz-New York consider that to be New York@Night prime real estate, if you excuse the expression, and use it for celebrating those 4 musicians who have that elusive combination of significance and longevity (our Interview: Mulgrew Miller Hall of Fame, if you will). We are proud of those who have graced our front page, lamented those legends who have since passed and occasionally even fêted 6 by Laurel Gross someone long deceased who deserved another moment in the spotlight. Artist Feature: Microscopic Septet But as our issue count grows and seminal players are fewer and fewer, we must expand our notion of significance. Part of that, not only in the jazz world, has by Ken Dryden 7 been controversy, those players or groups that make people question their strict On The Cover: The Bad Plus rules about what is or what is not whatever. Who better to foment that kind of 9 by Martin Longley discussion than this month’s On The Cover, The Bad Plus, only the third time in our history that we have featured a group. This tradition-upending trio is at Encore: Lest We Forget: Village Vanguard from the end of December into the first days of January. 10 Bill Smith Johnny Griffin Another band that has pushed the boundaries of jazz, first during the ‘80s but now with an acclaimed reunion, is the Microscopic Septet (Artist Feature).

  • Dance and Teachers of Dance in Eighteenth-Century Bath
DANCE AND TEACHERS OF DANCE IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY BATH Trevor Fawcett Compared with the instructor in music, drawing, languages, or any other fashionable accomplishment, the dancing master (and, in time, his female counterpart) enjoyed an oddly ambiguous status in 18th-century society. Seldom of genteel birth himself, and by education and fortune scarcely fit to rank even with the physician or the clergyman, he found himself the acknowledged expert and authority in those very social graces that were sup posedly the mark and birthright of the polite world alone. Ostensibly he taught dance technique: the execution of the minuet and formal dances, the English country dances in all their variants, the modish cotillion, and the late-century favourites - the Scottish and Irish steps. But while for his pupils a mastery of these skills was indeed a necessary prelude to the ballroom, the fundamental importance of a dancing master lay in the coaching he provided in etiquette, in deportment, and in the cultivation of that air of relaxed assurance so much admired by contemporaries. There was general agreement with John Locke's view that what counted most in dancing was not learning the figures and 'the jigging part' but acquiring an apparent total naturalness, freedom and ease in bodily movement. Clumsiness equated with boorish ness, vulgarity, rusticity, bad manners, bad taste. On several occasions the influential, taste-forming Spectator saw fit to remind its readers about the value of dancing, 'at least, as belongs to the Behaviour and an handsom Carriage of the Body'. Graceful manners and agreeable address ranked among the most reliable indicators of good breeding, and it was 'the proper Business of a Dancing-Master to regulate these Matters' .1 In theory, it might have been argued, only the more humbly born social aspirants 28 TREVOR FAWCETT ought to have needed the services of 'those great polishers of our manners', the dancing masters.
