8 Wendy, John and Michael fly through the sky with Peter Pan for many, many days. They enjoy flying and Peter plays games with them in the air. When they are hungry, Peter finds food for them. Then, one morning he says: ‘There it is. There’s Neverland.’ ‘Where, where?’ the children shout. ‘Where all the arrows• are pointing.’ It’s true! A million golden arrows are pointing from the sun to the island of Neverland. The children stand on their toes• in the air to look at it. It’s their first visit to the island but they all recognise it immediately. ‘Look, John! There’s the lagoon•,’ says Wendy. ‘Wendy, look at the turtles•. They’re burying• their eggs in the sand,’ says John. ‘I can see the smoke of the Indian camp!’ says Michael. As they get nearer to Neverland, it starts to get dark. Flying becomes more difficult and slower. Sometimes Peter has to push his way through the air before they can move. When their feet are almost touching the tops of the trees, Peter says: ‘They don’t want us to land•.’ ‘Who are THEY?’ asks Wendy. But Peter does not want to say. T inker Bell is asleep on his shoulder. He wakes her up and tells her to fly down and have a look around.

Then he says in a very casual way: ‘Do you want an adventure now?’ ‘What kind of adventure?’ John asks. ‘There’s a pirate in the grass down there,’ says Peter. ‘He’s asleep. If you like, we can go down and kill him.’ John isn’t sure that he wants this kind of adventure so he asks: ‘Do you kill many pirates?’ ‘Lots,’ Peter replies. ‘Who is the pirate captain?’ ‘Hook,’ answers Peter, and he looks angry as he says the name. Michael begins to cry. John is worried, too. They all know about Hook, the terrible pirate captain. ‘What’s he like? Is he a big man?’ John asks. ‘He’s a bit smaller since our last fight•. A bit• of him is missing• now,’ Peter replies. Then Peter says: ‘John, you must promise me one thing.’ ‘Which bit, Peter?’ asks John. ‘What, Peter?’ ‘His right hand.’ ‘If we meet Hook in a fight, you must let me fight him. ‘So he can’t fight now?’ ‘I promise,’ says John. ‘Oh, yes, he can.’ There’s a tinkling noise above them. It’s Tinker Bell. She’s ‘Does he fight with his left hand?’ speaking to Peter. ‘No. He has an iron hook• instead of a right hand. He fights ‘The pirates know that we are here,’ he tells the others. with that!’ BOOM! A cannonball• flies past them. It doesn’t hit them but it makes a strong wind that blows Wendy high up into the sky with Tinker Bell. The little fairy suddenly decides that she wants PARTS oF The BoDy to kill Wendy. She isn’t a bad fairy but she’s very jealous• of What do you do with these parts of your body? Peter’s new friend. She has an idea. She flies around Wendy and tinkles loudly: ‘Follow me, follow me’. The pirates disappear into the woods. Now Captain Hook and Mr Smee, the ship’s bo’sun•, are alone. Hook begins to talk about the lost boys. ‘I want their captain, Peter Pan, Smee,’ he says. ‘I don’t have a right hand because of Peter Pan – oh, and the crocodile.’ ‘Oh, yes. I know that you are afraid of crocodiles,’ says Smee. ‘I am not afraid of all crocodiles,’ explains Hook quickly. ‘Just one crocodile. It has my hand and now it wants to eat the rest of me.’ Then he sits down on a large mushroom•. ‘Smee,’ he says. ‘That crocodile wants to kill me, but luckily it has a clock inside it. The clock makes a noise: tick-tock, tick-tock. When I hear the tick-tock of the clock, I have time to run away before the crocodile can catch me.’ Suddenly Hook starts to feel very warm. ‘Oh dear!’ he cries. ‘I’m burning!’

He looks at the mushroom carefully. Then he pulls it out of the ground. Smoke starts coming out of the hole. ‘Look, Smee! It’s a chimney•!’ Hook cries. Now they can hear the voices of the lost boys. They look around and they see the holes in the trees. ‘It’s the lost boys’ house!’ whispers Hook. Then they hear another sound. At first it’s a very small sound, but it comes nearer and nearer and gets louder and louder. Tick-tock, tick-tock! Hook shivers. ‘The crocodile!’ he cries and runs away very fast. Smee follows him.
