Using first-person interviews and participant observation with a group of Lost Boys resettled in Denver, and historical and ethnographic data, this research seeks to explain why the Lost Boys converted to Christianity and the role that it played in their identity in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, and continues to play in their lives in Denver. Findings include the Lost Boys‟ need to adapt to radically changed circumstances that separated them from the central components of their lives—their families, villages, and cattle—and retention of the Dinka values of pragmatism and group autonomy, which allowed the Lost Boys to accept the once foreign practice of Christianity. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like thank all who helped this work come together. Debates about abolition of slavery have essentially focused on two interrelated questions: 1) whether nineteenth and early twentieth century abolitions were a major breakthrough compared to previous centuries (or even millennia) in the history of humankind during which bondage had been the dominant form of labour and human condition. 2) whether they express an action specific to western bourgeoisie and liberal civilization. It is true that the number of abolitionist acts and the people concerned throughout the extended nineteenth century (1780- 1914) had no equivalent in history: 30 million Russian peasants, half a million slaves in Saint- Domingue in 1790, four million slaves in the US in 1860, another million in the Caribbean (at the moment of the abolition of 1832-40), a further million in Brazil in 1885 and 250,000 in the Spanish colonies were freed during this period.

Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, 21 September 2016 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary entanglements between two cosmo-ontological systems within one African community. The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society.

The basis of this is renaming the brand of Christianity bequeathed on the continent by the various colonial masters and colonial missionary masters who came to reintroduce Christianity in Africa. This book through the efforts of the authors of its chapters attempts to present a non-parochial, impartial, and contextualized African Christianity. It recognizes the roles of both foreign missionaries and the native agents that lent their assistance to its definition. It further puts into consideration the culture of the Africans and assesses their feelings towards the “new religion” (Christianity) in Africa in its formative period. The authors who participate in this text are like harbingers of history for African Christianity in the 21st century as there had been many works written by 20th century scholars such as Adrian Hasting, Mark Shaw, and Bengt Sundkler which these writers make reference to. They attempt to identify the key subject matters in African Christianity, which other researches in the new millennium could refer to. The first chapter traces trends and issues in African Church history, the misjudgment, marginalization, and misrepresentations exhibited by the Western Missionaries about Africa, with Africans in relation to knowing God on the soil of Africa, when they came with the Christian gospel.

A little later Bishop Edward Steere in Zanzibar translated into Swahili and published the New Testament and in 1891 the entire Bible. The pioneering linguistics of early missionaries, Ludwig Krapf, Bishop Steere and Father Sacleux set a high standard for a succession of Swahili experts and Steere’s Swahili Bible provided a basis for Biblical translations into other East African vernaculars. The first modem missionary who pioneered missionary work in East and Central Africa was Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German Lutheran from Württem­ berg, educated in Basel, who arrived in East Africa on 7 January 1844 in the service of the Anglican Church Missionary Society.1 Krapf joined the CMS to participate in new Protestant mission initiatives in Christian Ethiopia2 and he started his missionary career in the Tigré province in 1837. Unable to work there, he went instead to the Shoa kingdom where in 1839 he and his co-work­ ers were warmly received by the king, Sahle Selassie, only to be expelled in 1842 for political reasons.

    Tafelberg To the lost boys of Bird Island – and to all voiceless children who have suffered abuse by those with power over them Foreword by Marianne Thamm Secrets, lies and cover-ups In January 2015, an investigative team consisting of South African and Belgian police swooped on the home of a 37-year-old computer engineer, William Beale, located in the popular Garden Route seaside town of Plettenberg Bay. The raid on Beale came after months of meticulous planning that was part of an intercontinental investigation into an online child sex and pornography ring. The investigation was code-named Operation Cloud 9. Beale was the first South African to be arrested. He was snagged as a direct result of the October 2014 arrest by members of the Antwerp Child Sexual Exploitation Team of a Belgian paedophile implicated in the ring. South African police, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Heila Niemand, cooperated with Belgian counterparts to expose the sinister network, which extended across South Africa and the globe. By July 2017, at least 40 suspects had been arrested, including a 64-year-old Johannesburg legal consultant and a twenty-year-old Johannesburg student. What police found on Beale’s computer was horrifying. There were thousands of images and videos of children, and even babies, being abused, tortured, raped and murdered. In November 2017, Beale pleaded guilty to around 19 000 counts of possession of child pornography and was sentenced to fifteen years in jail, the harshest punishment ever handed down in a South African court for the possession of child pornography.

As soon as the parents have gone, Peter follows Tinker Bell into the room, searching for Peter’s shadow. Wendy is awakened by the commotion and quickly befriends the mysterious visitor. The Darling children soon set off to Neverland with Peter, travelling the only way possible ("I’m Flying"). ​ ​ Back in Neverland, the Pirates search for the Lost Boys ("Pirate March"). After ​ ​ discovering the Lost Boys’ underground home, Captain Hook and his first mate Smee devise a plan ("Hook’s Tango"), but is chased away by the Crocodile. The Lost Boys ​ ​ remain in peril as the Brave Girls, led by Tiger Lily, arrive on the scene ("Brave Girl ​ Dance"). Peter and the Darlings reach Neverland, frightening the Brave Girls. Finally ​ safe, the Lost Boys celebrate the arrival of their new “mother” ("Wendy"). Captain ​ ​ Hook’s first attempt to poison the Lost Boys is thwarted by their new guardian, and the pirates must devise a new plan ("Hook’s Tarantella"). ​ ​ The next day, the Lost Boys learn a lesson from Peter, their “father” ("I Won’t Grow ​ Up").
