Its facade comprises 16,505 individual pieces of glass and the building takes the overall form of a spire with xve wings that twist from top to bottom. "The exterior structure of the building consists of xve wings that rotate almost 90 degrees. The twist creates a dynamic impression, giving the building the shape of a blazing yame, which resembles the logo of Gazprom, the natural gas producer that has taken up its new headquarters inside the building. "The skyscraper was also able to score points with the jury due to its use of environmentally friendly and energy efxcient technologies. As the northernmost supertall skyscraper in the world, the building is exposed to extreme temperatures. A double skin facade prevents unnecessary heat loss and makes it extraordinarily energy efxcient. The skyscraper is part of the huge Hudson Yards construction project that includes Heatherwick Studio's amazing Vessel. NOVEMBER 12, 2020 10:52 PM One builds up when there is no room to build out. It’s why the skyscraper was invented in Chicago a hundred and forty years ago. As such, to give an award, or even commend, a building as utterly pointless in utility as the Lakhta Center, which is conspicuously surrounded by immense tracts of fallow land, undermines the history and purpose of high-rise architecture, irrespective of the novelty of its perceived design.     ___________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vertical Velocity: Taiwan Home to World's Fastest Elevators Hamburg, January 23, 2013 – The elevators currently the fastest in the world were manufactured by the Japanese corporation Toshiba. Passengers are catapulted at a speed of 1,010 meters per minute, or 60 km/h, from the fifth to the 89th floor of Taipei 101. The ride in this Ferrari among elevators lasts a mere 37 seconds, at the end of which passengers step out already 382 meters above the ground at the observation floor of Taiwan's tallest building. Elevator speeds researched by Emporis, the international building-data provider (www.emporis.com ), emphasize the pole position of the elevators in Taipei 101 : the world's second-fastest, located in the Yokohama Landmark Tower , "only" manages a speed of 750 meters per minute. The world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa , only occupies third place in the list, with a maximum elevator speed of 36 km/h. The skyscraper of superlatives does however offer the world's fastest double- decker elevators. What is more, the double-deckers' passengers are also able to travel the longest distance currently possible in an elevator, exiting after a ride of 504 meters at the world's highest stop, 638 meters up the building. Overall, the race for the world's fastest elevator is clearly being run in Asian cities. The elevators in Chicago's John Hancock Center are the only ones not in Asia. What is more, 2014 will see a further attraction added to the continent: the elevators that Mitsubishi is set to install in the Shanghai Tower will take over as the world's fastest at a speed of 64.8 km/h.

But 2019 is also set to impress, with a number of groundbreak- ing designs and engineering feats due to complete around the world this year. Beijing will open its new Zaha Hadid-designed airport, Johannesburg will welcome Africa's new tallest tower and the world's largest underwater restaurant will fi nally open its doors to diners. From New York to Beijing, these are the most anticipated struc- tures set to complete or open in 2019. 30 Hudson Yards, New York At 1,296 feet tall, 30 Hudson Yards will become the second-tall- est offi ce building in New York when it completes later this year. It is also set to open the city's highest outdoor observa- tion deck, which will stand taller than the Empire State Building. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, the angular, glass-covered tower will serve as a new home for WarnerMedia and its sub- sidiaries HBO, CNN, Turner Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Under, Lidnesnes, Norway Sitting 16 feet beneath the surface of the North Sea, Under is set to become Europe's first -- and the world's largest -- underwater restaurant. Designed by Norwegian firm Snøhetta, the 110-foot-long structure will be able to accommodate around 100 guests across three floors, offering panoramic views of the surrounding waters.
