4Th Issue Enewsletter EN April 2016 Novelis China Automotive Newsletter Novelis Pioneers New Energy Vehicle Market Aluminization Seeking close cooperation with automakers in an era of transition novelis.com CONTENTS • Aluminum Plays a Crucial Role in the NEV Boom • Novelis Partners with Hyundai for IONIQ Advanced Hybrid • Novelis Wins “2015 Excellent Supplier” Award from FAW-VW for Second Consecutive Year • Novelis Achieves Significant Progress in Global Sustainable Development • Global Media Focus: The Rise of Lightweight Aluminum Application on Automotive OVERVIEW In recent years, achieving sustainable transportation solutions has become a crucial goal for nations as they look to meet the future energy requirements of an ever expanding and changing world. One of the most encouraging prospects so far are new energy vehicles (NEVs), which hope to tackle the issue with their greater energy security and lower emissions of greenhouses gases and other pollutants. With a sales volume over 330,000 in 2015, almost four times that of a year earlier, China has surpassed the US as the world's largest market for NEVs.1 Moreover, the trend is likely to continue, and in February 2016, Premier Li Keqiang announced that the Chinese government would further support the development of NEVs to promote optimization and a green economy. It is estimated that the annual sales volume of NEVs will greatly increase in China in the next decade, reaching over 5 million vehicles in 2020.2 Under these circumstances, major business opportunities are evident in the world's largest automotive market, with industry insiders even predicting that automotive aluminum is encountering an exceptional opportunity in China. Aluminum Plays a Crucial Role in the NEV Boom Lightness, formability and strength make aluminum the perfect choice for NEVs Aluminum is regarded as the current baseline infrastructure for NEVs, as automakers need to develop vehicles that are inherently lightweight and ecient so consumers can drive cars longer and farther without having to recharge the battery. As 1/3 lighter than steel in mass providing same strength level, aluminum helps enhance vehicles’ performance and agility. And using aluminum in NEVs can increase the vehicle’s driving range - for example, reducing the weight by 20 percent will allow the electric vehicle to travel 20 percent farther on the same charge.3 At the same time, NEVs design requires materials that are strong and durable enough for structural and crash components, while formable enough to meet next-generation design aesthetics, which also makes aluminum the perfect choice. Aluminum’s high strength-to-weight ratio makes parts that are lightweight yet capable of carrying heavy loads and absorbing high amounts of energy in crash. Pound for pound, aluminum can absorb twice as much crash energy as steel and is very predictable in the way it reacts to collision forces.4 Vehicle designers use this predictability to design structures that absorb crash energy and transfer it around and away from the passengers. In addition, aluminum’s corrosion resistance minimizes the deterioration of a vehicle’s structure – and hence its ability to absorb crash energy – over the life of the vehicle. At the end of the day, an aluminum-intensive vehicle can achieve up to a 20 percent reduction in total life cycle 5 energy consumption and up to a 17 percent reduction in CO2 with its lightness and recyclability , which perfectly matches with the root cause of NEVs development - to achieve sustainable transportation. As the world’s leading supplier of aluminum sheet for the automotive industry, Novelis is working closely with global automakers to leverage its leading R&T capabilities, allowing automakers to make the right alloy decisions based on what they’re looking for, and is deeply involved in the design process to develop NEVs in the years to come. Back to top Novelis Partners with Hyundai for IONIQ Advanced Hybrid Supplying its AdvanzTM high-strength aluminium alloys for Hyundai Motor’s IONIQ, a new eco-friendly advanced hybrid passenger vehicle. At the beginning of the new year, Novelis announced that the company was supplying Novelis AdvanzTM high-strength aluminium alloys for Hyundai Motor’s IONIQ, a new eco-friendly advanced hybrid passenger vehicle. The Hyundai IONIQ will be the first vehicle to be oered with a choice of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric model. This is Novelis’ first aluminum shipment for the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle car model in Asia. Novelis Changzhou plant, China’s first manufacturing facility for heat-treated aluminum automotive sheet, will supply high-strength automotive aluminum to be used in IONIQ’s hoods and tailgates. For these parts, Novelis’ products can achieve approximately 40 percent in weight savings versus steel. The lighter weight reduces the demand on the vehicle’s battery power and fuel, contributing to its class-leading fuel economy of 22.4 km/ℓ (52.7 miles per gallon). James Liu, Managing Director Novelis China and Vice President Automotive Novelis Asia also expects to see more joint ventures and local OEMs in China to join the green trend. “ Obviously, due to the tightening regulations of air pollution in major cities and the increasing consumer awareness of improving air quality, we can see a significant growth in the NEV market in China in recent years.” Back to top Novelis Wins “2015 Excellent Supplier” Award from FAW-VW for Second Consecutive Year Recognized for the company’s significant role in developing lightweight, high-quality automotive parts. Committed to the ongoing transformation of the Chinese automotive industry, Novelis China has been working with several local OEMs to provide innovative automotive aluminum solutions. In January, Novelis China won the “2015 Excellent Supplier” award at the FAW-Volkswagen (FAW-VW) Purchasing Working Conference, becoming the only flat-rolled aluminum supplier among ten companies that received the award. This is the second consecutive year that Novelis China has received the award, a recognition of the company’s important role in assisting the customer with the development of aluminum parts for Audi cars. Novelis China has strategically partnered with FAW-VW since 2012 by ocially supplying aluminum materials. After two years of cooperation, Novelis China received the “Good Supplier Nomination” award, and also received the “2014 Excellent Supplier” award for its high value-added services. This year, Novelis continues to utilize global assets and expertise to help FAW-VW remain a market leader to achieve success in China, and the “2015 Excellent Supplier” award again reiterates the meaningful collaboration between the two companies in supporting lightweight car production in China. “With nearly 40 years of experience in the automotive industry and local production capability in China, Novelis is confident in supporting local OEMs’ lightweight agenda to adjust to the ever increasing restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.” - James Liu Managing Director of Novelis China and Vice President, Automotive for Novelis Asia Back to top Novelis Achieves Significant Progress in Global Sustainable Development Novelis published its 2015 Sustainability Report, detailing significant progress towards the increasing use of recycled aluminum and using natural resources more eciently. According to the 2015 Novelis Sustainability Report, at the end of Fiscal Year 2015, Novelis achieved an average of 49 percent recycled aluminum inputs, up 19 percentage points from baseline years of 2007-2009, and a reduction in water use intensity by 22 percent. Over the past five years, Novelis has doubled its recycling capacity, helping to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 13 percent from baseline. Since 2011, Novelis has invested approximately $2 billion to expand recycling and production capacity. The company looks forward to utilizing its new capabilities to the fullest extent, delivering the highest quality, sustainable products to customers for years to come, helping them achieve their own sustainability objectives and adhere to evolving carbon constraints worldwide. Back to top Global Media Focus: The Rise of Lightweight Aluminum Application on Automotive Automotive weight reduction through aluminum application is becoming a trend in the global automotive market. At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, a line up of new models applied Novelis aluminum caught the eye of the world. The following content are translated and extracted from ‘The Rise of Lightweight Aluminum Application on Automotive’, Maeil Business Newspaper , March 24, 2016. Car models with Novelis Aluminum OEM Model Application Kia Niro hood, tailgate Hyundai Motor Company IONIQ hood, tailgate Maserati Levante hood, door, trunk lid, fender Volvo V90 bonnet, fender Nissan Infinity QX30 hood As Hyundai Motor Company’s hybrid car IONIQ and Kia Motors’ hybrid sports utility SUV Niro have applied a large amount of aluminum manufactured by Novelis, the industry’s interest in aluminum-applied vehicles is on the rise. The Ducker Worldwide, a global consulting agency, forecasted that the demand for aluminum sheet will increase from 90,000 tons in 2012 to 1,814,000 tons in 2025. Many cars that brought attention at the Geneva Motor Show in March applied aluminum to the car bodies. Volvo V90 applied aluminum to its hood and fender, and reduced the automobile’s weight by 100kg to 150kg. Levante, Masera- ti’s first SUV, applied aluminum in the car’s hood, doors, trunk lid, fender and more. The car’s weight decreased by 150kg. Jaguar Land Rover’s F-Type SVR also has an aluminum monocoque body. The company is known to have created a sensation in the past by applying an all-aluminum unibody structure to its all-new Range Rover. As the leading company in the industry, Novelis supplies aluminum to approximately 180 global automobile models including IONIQ and Niro. The Chairman’s Letter to Shareholders Dear Shareholder, Covid-19 and the associated lockdowns across countries have triggered a once-in-a-century crisis for the society and the economy in 2020. January now seems like a month of a bygone era — such has been the enormity of change. This is a defining period in human and business history: one that will test the resilience of individuals, societies, corporations, and nations. Given the fog of uncertainty all around, it is hard to be prescient in these times. But there is little doubt on one reality: companies with quality leadership, sound business fundamentals, and a track record of winning in turbulent times, will emerge as champions in the new global order. Global Economy It has been several months since the pandemic engulfed the world and yet there is a lot of uncertainty with respect to the extent of the economic contraction due to this crisis, and the subsequent pace of recovery. This year will see an economic contraction, but this 2020 recession is turning out very different from the past recessions. It has been too sudden – almost off the cliff; its spread has been all-encompassing – affecting almost every economy and sector, and the plunge in economic activity levels and employment has been unprecedented. On the positive side, this recession is likely to be one of the shortest, assuming no second wave of the pandemic recurs. As present lockdowns around As the world emerges the world get lifted, and businesses reopen, economic activity from the current is likely to bounce back fairly quickly.
