Wildlife Hedgehog ERINACEUS EUROPAEUS n Hedgehogs are protected. Since 2002 it is esti- mated that we have lost 30% of the UK’s population. n The spines are actually modified hairs and the aver- age hedgehog has about 16,000 of them. n Hedgehogs usually hibernate from October/November through to March/April. n They eat all kinds of invertebrates, as well as amphibians, birds eggs and anything else they can catch; they particu- larly like beetles, earthworms and slugs. Chemicals or slug pellets can make them sick. n Hedgehogs are nocturnal, If you ever see a hedgehog out during daylight it could be a sign of distress. n If you want to help hedgehogs, offer them meaty cat or dog food or complete cat biscuits, and leave log and leaf piles for them in your garden. n Its main defence against threats is to curl into a ball, an effective technique against predators, sadly not cars!
