DALLEY AND JILL RAPPOPORT n Karl Marx’s critique of capitalism, Robinson Crusoe is the proto- I type of “Homo Economicus.”1 King of his island, living (with the help of some scavenged English tools and materials) off of his own labor and that of Friday, Daniel Defoe’s shipwrecked hero exemplifies the traits of prudence, production, and power that made him the model of economic individualism. Despite Marx’s recognition that such extreme isolationism is a fantasy of fiction,2 nineteenth- and even twentieth-century economic phi- losophers looked, like Defoe, for the new spaces of production and trade that would characterize Economic Man. But where, in this fiction, is Eco- nomic Woman? Marx, who considered the family’s division of labor to be a “spontaneously developed system,”3 didn’t bother to look for her, and, for the most part, neither did his contemporaries. Although recent discussions of Economic Man by economists and cultural historians of the period have richly complicated his isolated productive stance, his analogue, Economic Woman, remains at best a liminal figure. 1 “Capital,” in The Marx–Engels Reader, ed. Crusoe’s economic tale—from his rejection of a middling rank to his claims to sovereignty over a Caribbean island—ignores women almost entirely, and no corresponding female char- acter has personified economic individualism within the popular imagina- tion. Indeed, for much of the nineteenth century, “individualism” itself was a concept at odds with dominant notions of women’s place within domestic ideology. Consigned to the “private” sphere by such conduct-book writ- ers as Sarah Stickney Ellis and fiction writers as Charles Dickens, consid- ered a “relative” creature whose aims were to serve her family rather than herself, she was an unlikely character to showcase the self-interest so cru- cial to political economy.4 Even such economically significant efforts as her household management and reproduction were most frequently detached from the market and characterized as modes of service that privileged the needs of others over the individual economic agent. Writing the history of nineteenth-century Economic Woman requires new modes of conceptual- ization that take into account her carefully circumscribed socioeconomic position and the behavior it elicited; she cannot simply be modeled on Eco- nomic Man. Whereas the familiar fiction of Economic Man posits “a conscious, knowing, unified, and rational subject,”5 this volume argues that more wide-ranging popular representations of Economic Women throw both characters into question. Instead of seeking one solitary, self-serving figure to mirror Economic Man, we do better to recognize the complex and excit- ing set of economic options that were available to a diverse range of nine- teenth-century mothers, daughters, wives, and “surplus” women during a period when many women were fighting for economic opportunities. The nineteenth century saw significant changes in economic thought and prac- tice: production and then consumption replaced household management as the focus of economics, various forms of labor were increasingly profession- alized and regulated, and consumer markets drastically expanded at home 4 Of course, in practice women were entering the public sphere and, according to some scholars, even “feminizing” it through their participation. The first two movements were based on the conviction that the use of mathematical methods could transform the way the Society did its traditional work in economic/social statistics while the third movement was associated with an enlargement in the scope of statistics. One major locus of disagreement is the Likelihood Principle, which says roughly that an observation supports a hypothesis to the extent that the hy- pothesis predicts it. The Likelihood Principle is supported by axiomatic arguments, but the frequentist methods that are most commonly used in science violate it. This dissertation advances debates about the Likelihood Principle, its near-corollary the Law of Likelihood, and related questions about statistical practice.

No form of English popular protest has been subject to such close scholarly analysis as the eighteenth-century food riot, a response not just to the understanding that food riots comprised two out of every three crowd actions but also to the influence of E. P. Thompson’s seminal paper ‘The moral economy of the English crowd’. If the food riot is now understood as an event of consid- erable complexity, one assertion remains unchallenged: that riots remained a tradition of the towns, with agrarian society all but unaffected by food rioting. This article offers a new interpretation in which the rural is not just the backdrop to food protests but instead a locus and focus of collective actions over the marketing of provisions, with agricultural workers taking centre stage. It is shown that agricultural workers often took the lead in market town riots as well as well as in instigating riots in the countryside.

    A study of motivation and the satisficing approaches used by Professional Craft Artists Sophie Bennett PhD Thesis Aberystwyth University 2015 Vol 1 1 Abstract This research investigates the way in which Professional Craft Artists (Pro-C Artists) operating in the rural sub-regions of Wales achieve a balance between co-existing, paradoxical motives. Previous studies have identified the existence of both intrinsic and extrinsic motives within the visual arts (Hirschman, 1983; RIPPLE, 1998; Fillis & McAuley, 2005) in, for example, the need to both earn an income and gain self-fulfilment from creative work. Such circumstances are investigated in this study, where the settlement of a satisfactory outcome both in terms of the level of satisfaction and income received can be seen in the production of visual art and craft. Intrinsic and extrinsic motives are considered, alongside external socio-environmental factors including location, materials and networks, in order to investigate paradoxical motives in creative work. Quantitative questionnaires have been used to identify Pro-C Artists operating within Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Powys and select seventeen participants who took part in the research. Qualitative interviews are used to identify motives and satisficing approaches used in the visual arts sector. The findings from this research highlight the three main satisficing approaches that are used to manage conflicting tensions. These are presented in the concluding section to explain the significance of managing such tensions within the workplace, and also in relation to current rural strategies and creative support organisations, to consider how investment in the visual arts sector may contribute to rural localities. 2 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisors Professor Steve McGuire and Dr Rachel Rahman for their support and guidance throughout this research.

L. Bowley (1869-1957) first advocated the use of surveys–the “representative method”–in 1906 and started to conduct surveys of economic and social conditions in 1912. Bowley’s 1926 memorandum for the International Statistical Institute on the “Measurement of the precision attained in sampling” was the first large-scale theoretical treatment of sample surveys as he conducted them. This paper examines Bowley’s arguments in the context of the statistical inference theory of the time. The great influence on Bowley’s conception of statistical inference was F. Y. Edgeworth but by 1926 R. A. Fisher was on the scene and was attacking Bayesian methods and promoting a replacement of his own. Bowley defended his Bayesian method against Fisher and against Jerzy Neyman when the latter put forward his concept of a confidence interval and applied it to the representative method. * Based on a talk given at the Sample Surveys and Bayesian Statistics Conference, Southampton, August 2008.
