Shrine Herald NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN December 9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent We Will Be a Band of Joyful Missionary Disciples ... Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration Sunday afternoon Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas. We have a wonderful opportunity to join our Mexican brothers and sisters and celebrate her feast with great joy. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated this Sunday at our 4:00 pm Spanish Mass. Our presider will be Donald Hanchon. Everyone is welcome to join us for the Mass and celebration following. A reception with music, traditional dances, raffles and food will follow after Mass at the grade school gym. Tickets will be available at the door. Please join this time of festivity. It’s a great way to experience Advent joy. What the “kerygma”? How does the “kerygma” relate to Christmas? Recently our parish priests and a number of our parishioners attended an Archdiocesan “Parish Renewal Day.” One of the points emphasized is the need to focus on the “kerygma” in our preaching at Christmas. We priests have been discussing how best to do that – but it’s not something just for priests. All of us should be able to give witness to the Good News. During Advent and Christmas it’s very easy to ask people, ”What does Christmas mean to you?” We should be prepared to give our own answer to that question and use it to draw people closer to Jesus. In our own words we should be able to simply and clearly give our answer: “Jesus makes all the difference in my life. I can’t imagine living without Him. Christmas is a great way to celebrate Jesus and all He’s done for me.” Trying to synthesize some key elements of our faith into a short and understandable way is part of sharing the “kerygma.” Abp. Vigneron gives us insights into the kerygma in his pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel. Here is a passage from that letter:

We share a simple snack before finishing with a closing song. The tuition is only $35 per year! Unleash the Gospel utgchallenge.com Last month, hundreds of missionaries in parishes across the Detroit encouraged parishioners to take the six-day “Unleash the Gospel Challenge.” Inspired by Archbishop Vigneron’s pastoral letter, the challenge asks Catholics to devote five minutes per day to learn and pray about what it means to be a Church on mission filled with joyful, missionary disciples. Your CSA gifts support innovative new communications in the Archdiocese. You can join this movement at any time at utchallenge.com. Each morning, you will receive an email with a two-minute video and a three-minute reflection, presenting an opportunity to learn more about the action of God in our region and the role you have in this great mission.
