Shrine Herald NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH December 9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent We Will Be a Band of Joyful Missionary Disciples ... Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration Sunday afternoon Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas. We have a wonderful opportunity to join our Mexican brothers and sisters and celebrate her feast with great joy. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated this Sunday at our 4:00 pm Spanish Mass. Our presider will be Bishop Donald Hanchon. Everyone is welcome to join us for the Mass and celebration following. A reception with music, traditional dances, raffles and food will follow after Mass at the grade school gym. Tickets will be available at the door. Please join this time of festivity. It’s a great way to experience Advent joy. What the “kerygma”? How does the “kerygma” relate to Christmas? Recently our parish priests and a number of our parishioners attended an Archdiocesan “Parish Renewal Day.” One of the points emphasized is the need to focus on the “kerygma” in our preaching at Christmas. We priests have been discussing how best to do that – but it’s not something just for priests. All of us should be able to give witness to the Good News. During Advent and Christmas it’s very easy to ask people, ”What does Christmas mean to you?” We should be prepared to give our own answer to that question and use it to draw people closer to Jesus. In our own words we should be able to simply and clearly give our answer: “Jesus makes all the difference in my life. I can’t imagine living without Him. Christmas is a great way to celebrate Jesus and all He’s done for me.” Trying to synthesize some key elements of our faith into a short and understandable way is part of sharing the “kerygma.” Abp. Vigneron gives us insights into the kerygma in his pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel. Here is a passage from that letter: (Continued on page 7) 2100 W.
