On The Journey +In today’s Gospel parable, the master is away at a wedding feast. In Jesus’ telling of this story, He focuses on those who await the master’s return. They have been given instructions and are expected to carry them out. The servants do not know when the master will return. They wait and make preparations [and] act in accord with his will. And they are ready. If we put ourselves in the place of the servants with Jesus as the master, here we will find the Good News of the Gospel. For being ready for Jesus’ second coming is less about any actual time and place, and more about what we choose to do while we wait. We, too, have been given instructions and commandments, and there is no time to waste in preparing and Assumption of the participating in God’s kingdom. Through the grace of baptism we have been grafted Blessed Virgin Mary into Christ, giving us, as Wisdom says of our ancestors, sure knowledge of the oaths in which [we] put [our] faith. This is the faith which is the realization of what is hoped Mass will be celebrated for: redemption in Jesus Christ. It is this faith that gives us the desire - as it gave Thursday, Abraham - to obey God’s call, and the courage to journey wherever God has August 15, 2019 prepared for us to go. Near the end of the Eucharistic Prayer – at the end of the Lord’s Prayer during 8:15 AM Mass – the priest prays in part, “Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil…that, by 12:15 PM the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin….as we await the blessed 7:30 PM hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” This prayer, “developing the last petition of the Lord’s Prayer itself, asks for deliverance from the power of evil for the whole community of the faithful.” (GIRM 81) So with prayer and action, we prepare ourselves and one another for the return of our Master. We do whatever it means, individually, for each one of us to sell [our] belongings and give alms; to gird [our] loins and light [our] lamps; to defend our house from thieves. Let us come to know God’s will and follow it soberly and attentively. Let us do these things, by God’s grace. Then we know that we shall rejoice when we once again see the Son of Man come in all his glory!

+This weekend, we welcome Fr. Linus Kinyua who will be speaking to us for our annual Mission Appeal in support of the Diocese of Meru in Kenya, Africa. Kenya, (continued on page 3)

On The Journey (continued from page 1) and many parts of the continent, are not only struggling with a multi-year drought, but also over-all poverty and medical needs. Please be generous as you can to help out in this appeal!

+This coming Thursday is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation. Masses will be celebrated in the church at 8:15 a.m.; 12:15 p.m. (the lunchtime crowd, as I like to call them!); and then at 7:30 p.m. in the evening. Please make every effort to attend one of these masses as we honor Mary for this most special blessing granted to her by God for being the mother of his Son, Jesus Christ.

+With some warmer weather we have been having, construction has made some progress around the campus over these past couple weeks. New concrete entrances, curbs, and sidewalks have been poured and curing well. The interior vestibules to the large west gathering space have been installed. A lot of tile work has been finished in the lavatories and kitchenette; painting has been going on with the first coats. Further work on the electrical, media, and HVAC plans have made significant progress. We hope to see a lot more work on putting the asphalt parking lots in, as well as connecting the lights in the parking lots. Our contractor continues to work with DTE for the “change-over of the old electrical transformer to the new one (necessary because of the additional demands of the facility). Your generosity with our CSA/Building campaign continues! We have $576,308 in donations/pledges against our target of $352,457, netting us a potential refund of $223,851 for use on our building requirements and parish up-grades. May you be blessed for the sacrificial offerings you have made to help our parish community!

+One area that will be upgraded will be the parish phone system which is being necessitated by the construction. This is actually outside of the project scope, but had been partially budgeted for in the current year’s fiscal budget plan. We are looking for better, more reliable service to help in meeting our ministry to our parish community!

+My trip to Iowa last weekend went well, and a good time was had by all! Sadly, as I was leaving the parking lot to start that journey westward, I received notice that a dear friend of mine from my Port Huron ministry at St. Mary parish had passed away, and the family was asking for me to do the funeral early Monday morning. With the Lord’s blessings and guidance, we were able to return safe and sound late Sunday evening, so that I could preside at the funeral of Mrs. Joan Clearly. Please keep her in your prayers, as we remember all our deceased loved ones in our hearts and prayers!

+August is moving quickly. Holy Family school administration has been working diligently over this past week on various plans. We keep our students of all ages in special prayer as they prepare to go back to college, high school, or grade school…and for those involved in sports practices of various kinds, to be safe! Looking forward to a great fall – and as always, seeing you in church! -Msgr. Mike (with thoughts from FAITH Catholic Publishing)

Saint Maximilian Kolbe, the Polish Franciscan priest, missionary and martyr, is celebrated throughout the Church on August 14. The saint died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz, during World War II, and is remembered as a “martyr of charity” for dying in place of another prisoner who had a wife and children. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982. St. Maximilian is also celebrated for his missionary work, his evangelistic use of modern means of communication, and for his lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. St. Maximillian is the patron saint of families, prisoners, journalists, political prisoners, drug addicts and the pro-life movement. St. John Paul II declared him to be “the patron saint of our difficult century.” www.standrewchurch.org 248.651.7486 August 11, 2019

8 RCIA / HFRS RCIA…Part of Being a Joyful Missionary in the Catholic Church

Has someone asked you about your faith, inquired about being baptized, or completing their Sacraments, or was baptized in another faith but would like to learn more about the Catholic Church? Do you know someone who has an interest in becoming a Catholic?

The decision to become a member of the Catholic faith is often fostered by invitation by a member of our faith community. This means you! By our Baptism we are all called into missionary discipleship, and therefore, are in a key position to invite others into our faith journey. This is how we “Unleash the Gospel”!

The process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of prayer, learning, and joining with others who feel the Spirit of God nudging them to the Catholic Faith. Within the RCIA process are those adults who have never been baptized those who have been baptized in another faith, or Baptized Catholic but have not completed their initiation (have not celebrated First Eucharist or Confirmation).

The process of joining the Church is not as simple as filling out a “membership application”. It starts with someone inviting an interested person to attend an RCIA session. Will you be that someone to extend an invitation? Will you be a joyful Missionary for Jesus?

If you are interested in any aspect of the RCIA process, or would like more information, you can contact me at the Parish Office at (248) 651–7486 ext. 105, or email at [email protected]. You can also ask one of our RCIA volunteers, Lisa Juriga at [email protected].
