Stanojevic 2004 ABSTRACT Conducting a first course in music composition in a classroom setting is one of the most difficult tasks a composer/teacher faces. Such a course is much more effective when the basic elements of compositional technique are shown, as much as possible, to be universally applicable, regardless of style. When students begin to see these topics in a broader perspective and understand the roots, dynamic behaviors, and the general nature of the different elements and functions in music, they begin to treat them as open models for individual interpretation, and become much more free in dealing with them expressively. This document is not designed as a textbook, but rather as a resource for the teacher of a beginning college undergraduate course in composition. The Introduction offers some perspectives on teaching composition in the contemporary musical setting influenced by fast access to information, popular culture, and globalization. In terms of breadth, the text reflects the author’s general methodology in leading students from basic exercises in which they learn to think compositionally, to the writing of a first composition for solo instrument. -

DOI: 10.2298/FID1504830K Original scientific article Received: 25.11.2105 — Accepted: 4.12.2105 Zdravko Kobe True Sacrifice On Hegel’s Presentation of Self-Consciousness Abstract The paper provides a modest reading of Hegel’s treatment of self- consciousness in his Phenomenology of Spirit and tries to present it as an integral part of the overall project of the experience of consciousness leading from understanding to reason. Its immediate objective is, it is argued, to think the independence and dependence, that is the pure and empirical I within the same unity of self-consciousness. This implies a double movement of finding a proper existence for the pure I and at the same time a breaking down of the empirical I’s attachment to particularity. It is argued that the Hegelian strug- gle for recognition intends to show how the access to reason demands the subject’s renunciation of its attachment to particularity, that is to sacrifice not only its bare life but every thing indeed, including its particular identity, 830 and yet, to go on living. Its success was partly due to the famous Paris lectures of Kojève who, combining Marx and Heidegger, presented it as a core matrix of Hegel’s entire thought. -

Ranging from physics through literature to linguistics, spanning philosophy from East to West, and weaving it all together in remarkably lucid prose, Roderick intro- duces a new concept of analogy that sheds unfamiliar light on such thinkers as Marx, Deleuze, Goodman, Sellars, and Foucault. More than a literary device, analogy teaches us something about being itself. Album Review: Bon Iver's 22, a Million
Album Review: Bon Iver’s 22, a Million 22, a Million, the newest album by American indie folk band Bon Iver, leaves the listener with an overarching question: Is there any border left between acoustic and electronic music? Although ambiguous as to which category it falls into, Bon Iver manages to respect both genres with a rich, homogenous mixture of experimental and traditional instrumentation. However, the album is a motley of songs that—both individually and as a group—build to nowhere, like a fleeting thought that crosses the mind at one point, but leaves no lasting impression. Founded in 2007 by singer/songwriter Justin Vernon, Bon Iver has been the vanguard of the indie folk/experimental genre. Vernon—a Wisconsin native with deep ties to the American wilderness—is undeniably influenced by a guitar-and-voice acoustic sound that is reminiscent of childhood campfires, roasting s’mores, and long silences between experienced fishermen. Tracks like “29 #Strafford APTS” and “00000 Million” have obvious connections to the folk genre: banjo, acoustic guitar, three and four-part vocal harmonizing, and chatter and laughter among musicians before the start of the song. These elements anchor the album, preventing it from straying too far from the group’s previous releases. During the five-year gap between the album Bon Iver and 22, a Million, Bon Iver evidently delved into the uncharted territory of experimental music. The use of synthesizers, vocal filtration, extensive sampling, and static-ridden beats establishes a distinctive atmosphere of digital haziness, a complementary frame for Vernon’s midwestern accent-tinged voice. -

Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals. -

He simply never fits the archetype: his best album, both Gin terms of artistic and commercial success, The Pleasure Principle (1979), has no guitars on it; his career was brief; and he retired at his peak. Therefore, he has received little critical attention; the only book-length analysis of his work is a slim volume from Paul Sutton (2018), who strains to fit him somehow into the rock canon. With few signposts at hand—and his own open refusal to be a star—writing about Numan is admittedly a challenge. In fact, Numan is a good test case for questioning the traditional belief in the authenticity of individual artistic genius. -

There are odd time signatures, indefinite song structures but the tracks ebb and flow beautifully. Columbia as an album is a single piece of art as a concept. Listen, track by track, join up the dots, get the message loud and clear – England is indeed dreaming.
