ICE SKATING ASSOCIATION OF INDIA Ice Skating is a popular Olympic sport in European and American continents. It is practised and played regularly by youngsters. To give boost to ice skating games in India, Ice Skating Association of India was formed in March 2002 on the advice of Raja Randhir Singh, the then Secretary General of Indian Olympic Association. Ice Skating Association of India was registered with Registrar of Societies in year 2002. Since then the Ice Skating Association of India has pumped a lot of energy and enthusiasm in the ice skating fraternity of young girls and boys throughout the length and breadth of the country. Many roller skaters have adopted themselves as ice skaters and performing very well. I. Affiliation: 1. Affiliated Member of • IOA - Indian Olympic Association • ISU - International Skating Union, Switzerland • ASU - Asian Skating Union, South Korea 2. Registered with Registrar of Societies in the year 2002 in Delhi. II. Aims & Objectives: 1. To encourage and promote physical fitness, character building and spirit of adventure both for men and women through Ice Skating sport. 2. To promote, develop, regulate, organize and control Ice Skating sport in India. 3. To hold various competitions for men, women, boys and girls (both senior and junior) as may be decided by the ISAI. 4. To organize and hold coaching and training and refresher courses, camps for participants, referees and coaches for promotion of the Ice Skating game. 5. To arrange and sponsor participation of National and other teams in the International competitions. 6. To arrange representation of India in National and International events. 7. To render, if any, possible financial assistance to affiliated organizations for the promotion and training of the Ice Skating sport. 2 III. What we have done: 1. ISAI has been conducting National Ice Skating Championships every year since 2004. 2. ISAI has been sending athletes for participation in international ice skating competitions. So far more than 300 athletes have participated in international competitions. 3. Indian ice skaters won medals in many Asian Ice Skating competions. The summary is: Gold Medals 10 Silver Medals 19 Bronze Medals 27 Total Medals 56 IV. In Winter Olympic Games held after every four years, the competitions are held in the major discipline of Ice Skating,viz : (i) Figure Skating – Single, Pair, Ice Dance, Synchronized Skating. (ii) Short Track Speed Skating – 500 m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m races. (iii) Long Track Speed Skating – 500m, 1500m, 3000m, 10000m races. V. International Participation by Indian Ice Skaters in: • 23 World Cups Speed Skating Championships • 11 World Championships of Figure Skating • 21 World Junior Speed Skating Championships • 02 World Junior Figure Skating Championships • 19 Junior Grand Prix Figure Skating Championships • 24 Asian Figure Skating Championships • 07 Asian Speed Skating Championships. 3 ICE SKATING RINKS Olympic sport of ice skating can be played in ice skating rinks having sufficient thickness of ice and proper quality of ice. Ice rinks can be natural or artificial. Natural ice rinks are weather dependent and of temporary nature. To avoid uncertainties in holding ice skating events, artificial ice skating rinks are built and used. Artificial ice skating rinks are costly to build and maintain them. In India, the location of ice rinks is as follows: I. Open Air Ice Rinks 1. Leh 2. Gulmarg 3. Shimla 4. Auli II. Artificial Ice Rinks 1. Delhi NCR – Gurgaon 2. Surat 3. Mumbai 4. Cochin 5. Pune 6. Kodai Konal 4 MISSION OLYMPICS Each athlete’s dream is to participate in Olympic Games and if feasible, to win a medal. It brings glory to not only the athlete but to the nation and sports federation he/she represents. In this endeavour, some of our athletes of Ice Skating Association of India are working very hard to make headway for qualifying to participate in next Winter Olympic Games to be held in February 2018 in South Korea. Determination and dedication are the pillars for the athletes to achieve their goal of Mission Olympics. Proper and correct coaching, along with commensurate sports infrastructure guides the athletes to their goal.
