    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CIS celebrates first International Day of University Sport Sept. 20, 2016 TORONTO (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), is proud to celebrate the first International Day of University Sport (IDUS) on Sept. 20. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced Tuesday’s inaugural celebration of IDUS in November 2015. The historic event marks the anniversary of the first student world championship held Sept. 17-21, 1924 in Warsaw, Poland. CIS is one of 170 national university sport federations around the world, participating annually in up to 50 sporting events on the annual FISU calendar, including Summer and Winter Universiades and world university championships. In the last international cycle, over 14,000 athletes competed at the 2015 FISU Games, while another 6,000 attended world university championship events in 2014. Canada sent over 400 athletes combined to the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea and the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain. The 2016 world university championships run until December, while the next Summer and Winter Universiades are scheduled for Jan. 29-Feb. 8 and Aug. 19-30, 2017 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and Taipei City, Taipei. CIS boasts over 12,000 student-athletes and 700 coaches from 56 universities who vie for 21 national championships in 12 different sports on an annual basis. In the last two years, 50 of the 56 member schools were represented at international events, and over 3,100 Canadian student- athletes were named Academic All-Canadians in 2014-15. The main areas addressed during the Meetings of the Council in Barcelona were the review of the Congress Book of the 49th International Ski Congress, discussion of the proposals of the National Ski Associations and Technical Committees, as well as the nomination of the FIS Committees for the period 2014 - 2016. The following “short summary of decisions” is in principle limited to Council decisions not directly related to the Congress Agenda. 1. EVENT OVERVIEW Curl Mesabi on the Iron Range in Eveleth, Minnesota, USA will host a made-for- TV international curling event from December 3-5 2015. http://www.curlmesabi.com/ Curl Mesabi started as a joint venture between the State of Minnesota, the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, the City of Eveleth, the City of Gilbert, the City of Mountain Iron , the City of Virginia and the Eveleth, Gilbert, and Virginia Curling Clubs. All three clubs are now combined into one organization known as Curl Mesabi. Curl Mesabi is located in the Range Recreation and Civic Center located in Eveleth, Minnesota. This 8 sheet facility was completed in 1998. Curl Mesabi has approximately 370 members including men, women, seniors, and juniors. Curl Mesabi is governed by a 9 member Board of Directors. Curling Night in America set to return in January and February 2016 The eight-team competition, entitled the U.S. Curling Grand Prix, will feature rinks from the U.S., China, Japan, and Scotland competing at Curl Mesabi Arena. Six episodes from the event will be featured on NBCSN. Further broadcast details for coverage around the world will be released at a later date. Strong ratings and a demand for curling on TV will fuel the return of Curling Night in America this winter. The made-for-TV international curling event, which debuted last year, will be staged and taped Dec. 3-5 at the eight-sheet Curl Mesabi in Eveleth, Minn.
