Solemnity of the Ascension —June 2, 2019 Thoughts from Fr. Weldon

The Ascension

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up to heaven?” ( Acts 1:11). The question has to do with our attitude to two basic realities which shape every human life: earth and heaven. We stand on earth because our Maker made us as the crowning work of his creation, made in his own image and likeness. He gave them the dignity of being children of God and the gift of immortality. Man fell by rejecting God and saying No, but God entered directly into human history, which then became a history of salvation.

“We stand” on the earth, we are rooted in the earth and we grow from it in the midst of our daily joys and sufferings. So we ask, “Is this all there is? Is this earth on which “we stand” our final destiny? The apostles stood there looking up to heaven because they looked to Jesus Christ, the Crucified and Risen One, raised up on high. At a distance of two thousand years, the meaning of that event is quite clear. Here on earth, we are called to look up to heaven, to turn our minds and hearts to the inexpressible mystery of God. We are called to look towards this divine reality, to which we have been directed from our creation. For there we find life’s ultimate meaning. Benedict XVI 28 May 2006

Jesus gave a mission to the apostles just prior to his ascension. Our feet are on the ground and we look to Christ; to proclaim the Kingdom of God. He has ascended and we become his arms and legs on earth. Ad astra per aspera i s our state motto: To the Stars through Difficulty. It can easily sum up life on the prairie, with its wide ranging weather. Life in Christ is not ignoring the difficulty, but rather staying focused on the mystery of God. He made us to seek that which is above; to be fulfilled in the depths of our hearts through a relationship with his Son. - Fr. Weldon

St. Boniface - Wednesday, June 5th

St. Boniface, born in England and originally known as Winfrid, is the apostle to and died June 5, 755. He grew in holiness and intellectual stature as a , but always desired to be a to the “Old Saxons” in Germany. Thishis was granted to him in 716. His original efforts did not bear fruit, so he returned to his monastery in England within a year. His brother elected him , butt he begged them to choose another. The of Winchester agreed and gave him a letter to present to Pope Gregory II. With this letter Winfrid returned to the continent.

Now, with good standing and relation with Gregory II, Winfrid set out for the landnd of Germany. He found the Church flourishing in Bavaria, but as he ventured northh he found the country of Franconia (think of Frankfort area) in bad condition. St. Painting for our renovation by Wendy Lewis Killian had tried to evangelize and establish the Church, but had been martyred in 689. Boniface worked to put the Church in central Germany and Frisia, (northern edge of Germany along North Sea) back on course after many years of upheaval. Many had returned to paganism. Others mixed Christianity and paganism together. Winfrid had little success, but when the pagan king Radbod of Frisia died he had greater success with evangelization.

He continued to work tirelessly throughout central and northern German lands. Around 720 Winfrid went to seek a blessing from Pope Gregory II to be relieved from obedience to his monastery in England and to work independently in Germany. Gregory II granted this and gave Winfrid the name, Boniface, which means “Does Well”, and made him a regional bishop over Germany. He also sent with Boniface a letter to the powerful . With this protection, his work spread from about 725 to 755. It was in the 720s that Boniface made a decision to strike at the root of pagan worship and superstitions. On a day publicly announced, Boniface cut down the sacred oak of Donar in Hessia. Missionary efforts were more successful after this. He died a martyr about 30 yrs later in his attempts to evangelize Frisia on the northern shores of Germany. In 755, pagans of Frisia set upon him and about 37 . They martyred them all.

St. Boniface reformed the Church that was crumbling under paganism and evangelized peoples who had never heard of Jesus Christ. He is the great reformer and missionary of the land of Germany. - Fr. Weldon

One of the murals to be placed on the east wall of the church flanking the choir loft will be of St. Boniface to honor all he did for our ancestors. Have you returned your pledge card for our upcoming renovation? Only about 16% of families have done so this month. Your help is vital to the success of this project!
