ICA For immediate release: 13 January 2016 Dennis Morris: PiL - First Issue to Metal Box 23 March - 15 May 2016 ICA Fox Reading Room Album cover image from PiL’s first album Public Image: First Issue (1978). © Dennis Morris – all rights reserved. The ICA presents rarely seen photographs and ephemera relating to the early stages of the band Public Image Ltd’s (PiL) design from 1978-79 with a focus on the design of the album Metal Box. Original band members included John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten - vocals), Keith Levene (lead guitar), Jah Wobble (bass) and Jim Walker (drums). Working closely with photographer and designer Dennis Morris, the display explores the evolution of the band’s identity, from their influential journey to Jamaica in 1978 to the design of the iconic Metal Box. Set against a backdrop of political and social upheaval in the UK, the years 1978-79 marked a period that hailed the end of the Sex Pistols and the subsequent shift from Punk to New Wave. Morris sought to capture this era by creating a strong visual identity for the band. His subsequent designs further aligned PiL with a style and attitude that announced a new chapter in music history. For PiL’s debut single Public Image, Morris designed a record sleeve in the format of a single folded sheet of tabloid newspaper featuring fictional content about the band. His unique approach to design was further illustrated by the debut PiL album, Public Image: First Issue (1978). In a very un-Punk manner, its cover and sleeve design imitated the layout of popular glossy magazines. -

Image courtesy of the artist. During the last few years Russian Red has become one of the most renowned artists in the Spanish music scene. Russian Red’s singer, Lourdes Hernández, has an exceptional voice and an innate ability to communicate and captivate a variety of audiences. She broke through the music scene in 2008 and became THE indie phenomenon with her debut album I Love Your Glasses (achieving a Gold record in Spain) and soon began performing on the main Spanish stages (Primavera Sound Festival, FIB, Jazzaldia, among many others), and reaching audiences in the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Costa Rica, Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc. In 2011 she released her second LP, Fuerteventura (with Sony Music) thus taking a big leap forward in her career. Produced by Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, David Byrne, etc.) and recorded with Stevie Jackson, Bob Kildea and Richard Colburn from Belle & Sebastian, Fuerteventura debuted at #2 on the topselling albums charts in Spain, where it stood for over 39 weeks, consolidating her position as one of the most outstanding and international Spanish artists. Russian Red rounded the year off taking home the MTV EMA Award as “Best Spanish Artist.” Fuerteventura was not only a great success in Spain, but it also launched Russian Red onto the international scene, placing her in the international bands spectrum. -

Rhino celebrates the Ramones’ indelible musical legacy with reissues of the pioneering group’s first four albums on 180-gram vinyl. Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket To Russia and Road To Ruin look amazing and come in accurate reproductions of the original packaging. More importantly, the records sound magnificent and were made using lacquers cut from the original analog masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. For these releases, Rhino will – for the first time ever on vinyl – reissue the first pressing of Leave Home, which includes “Carbona Not Glue,” a track that was replaced with “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” on all subsequent pressings. Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Tommy Ramone. The original line-up – along with Marky Ramone who joined in 1978 – helped blaze a trail more than 30 years ago with this classic four-album run. It’s hard to overstate how influential the group’s signature sound – minimalist rock played at maximum volume – was at the time, and still is today.
