It focuses mainly on painting and graphic arts, and selected aspects of photography, design and architecture. Appropriation from Japanese sources triggered the articulation of new visual and conceptual languages which helped forge new art and art educational paradigms that would define the modern age. Starting with Polish fin-de-siècle Japonisme, it examines the role of Western European artistic centres, mainly Paris, in the initial dissemination of Japonisme in Poland, and considers the exceptional case of Julian Żałat, who had first-hand experience of Japan. The second phase of Polish Japonisme (1901-1918) was nourished on local, mostly Cracovian, infrastructure put in place by the ‘godfather’ of Polish Japonisme Żeliks Manggha Jasieski. His pro-Japonisme agency is discussed at length. -

It’s no wonder given that the media often refers to Auschwitz as a “Polish concentration camp,” which is a rewrite of history. That is why I posted a petition on The Kosciuszko Foundation website asking newspapers to change their style guides to avoid using this historically erroneous phrase. It confuses undereducated readers, leading them to believe that the Holocaust was executed by Poland, rather than Nazi Germany. My sincerest thanks to all of you who signed the petition. -

Migration Studies – Review of Polish Diaspora nr 3 (177)/2020, http://www.ejournals.eu/Studia-Migracyjne/ DOI: 10.4467/25444972SMPP.20.030.12594 The Great Theater of the World by Elżbieta Wittlin Lipton JUSTYNA BUDZIK1 ORCID: 0000-0003-3530-0647 Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora Jagiellonian University The paper takes as its focus the theatrical oeuvre of Elżbieta Wittlin Lipton – a Polish émigré artist and the daughter of an eminent Polish émigré writer Józef Wittlin. It presents a concise introduc- tion to the artistic work of Wittlin Lipton – her costume and set designs – which she has been cre- ating on the European (Spain) and North American continents (United States) since late seventies of the previous century onwards. Biographical facts have been outlined here along with the most charactristic features of her artistic style, with a special emphasis laid on the Spanish genius loci which should be regarded as the most outstanding trait of her total work. The paper constitutes a part of a book devoted to the life and artistic achievements of Elżbieta Wittlin Lipton which the author of this manuscript has been currently writing. Key words: theatrical costume and set design, Spanish genius loci, émigré artist Polish Émigré Literature and Art – An Introduction There can be no denying that the Polish literature and art created outside the coun- try since the beginning of the previous century has an enduring fascination for critics. Archive group/ Nr colletion name Dates Description: Copyrights: 1 Illustrated Daily 1910–1939 The archive group contains photographs Public Domain Courier Concern – of the “Illustrated Daily Courier” press publisher, which owned the “Światowid” the Photographic photo agency. The publishing house Archive operated during the years 1910 – 1939 with the most dynamic period of its operation being the interwar period, when the “Illustrated Daily Courier” was the largest Polish press concern. The archive group contains more than 188,000 archive units dated 1910-1939, most of them being glass negatives and positives on matt paper, sometimes negatives on a film and positives on shining paper. This collection contains four groups of photographs: the period of the 2nd Republic (documented most extensively). They show various issues: state authorities, political, social, religious life, economy, culture, science, education, military, sports, life of the Polish community abroad; 1st World War period with most of the photographs showing the Polish Legions; pre-1st World War period; photographs of foreign photographic agencies which cooperated with the Illustrated Daily Courier. Number of units: 188.828 Recording media: book inventory 2 Press Publishers 1939–1945 Founded in 1939 on the basis of the Public Domain Kraków – Warsaw confiscated assets of the Polish press concerns, including those of the [Zeitungsverlag “Illustrated Daily Courier”, the publisher Krakau-Warschau] operated in the General Government, where it published newspapers and periodicals in Polish and German. The photographs were taken mainly by full- time and private photographers, press agencies and war correspondents. The group contains more than 18,000 archive units dated 1939-1945.
