  • Sharon Kanach
Sharon Kanach The American musician Sharon Kanach has lived in France for the past thirty years. She originally went to Paris to study under Nadia Boulanger. Very quickly however, her path crossed that of Iannis Xenakis (1922 – 2001), with whom she collaborated closely, espe- cially on his writings. First, she translated Arts/Sciences : Alloys, followed by a new, revised, and enlarged edition of his seminal For- malized Music, both for Pendragon Press. In 2006, Editions Parenthèses published Xenakis’s Musique de l’Architecture in French, which Kanach co-authored, released in a distinct edition also by Pendragon Press, Fall 2008. She is currently co-editing (with Makis Solomos and Benoît Gibson) the Critical Edition of this composer’s writings and unpublished papers in nine volumes. Kanach was also the musical assistant of the Italian composer Gia- cinto Scelsi (1905 – 1988) during the last ten years of his life. A trilogy of his collected writings was realized under her coordina- tion by Actes Sud in France between 2006 and 2008 : Les anges sont ailleurs … (texts and unpublished papers on music and art), L’Homme du son (poetry), and Il Sogno 101 (memoirs). A single volume collection of these three books will be published in English by Pendragon Press in 2009/10. Sharon Kanach oversees the pub- lication of both composers’ scores at Editions Salabert – Universal Publishing, Paris. Giacinto Scelsi , Count of Ayala Valva (La Spezia, January 8, 1905 – Rome, August 9, 1988) was an Italian composer who also wrote surrealist poetry in French. He is best known for writing music based around only one pitch, altered in all manners through microtonal oscillations, harmonic DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC STANFORD UNIVERSITY allusions, and changes in timbre and dynamics, as paradigmatically exem- plified in his revolutionaryQuattro Pezzi su una nota sola [Four Pieces on a single note] (1959).

  • Conditions for Creative Artists in Europe
Conditions for Creative Artists in Europe Report from the EU Presidency Seminar in Visby, Sweden 30 March – 1 April 2001 Edited by Professor Svante Beckman © Ministry of Culture, Sweden, and the Authors 2 Preface As we now approach the end of the Swedish Presidency, we are pleased to present the final and printed report of the Visby meeting on “Conditions for Creative Artists in Europe”, which took place from 30th March to 1st April 2001. The seminar had some 150 participants from almost thirty European countries. The majority of participants were creative artists active in the fields of literature, visual arts and composition. It is our impression that the meeting was a great success. Many have expressed their appreciation. The most important aspect of the meeting was perhaps the fact that it brought together artists (or their representatives), experts and ministerial officials in this European context. Consequently, the issues discussed were concrete and of crucial interest to those primarily concerned. Another important trait was, of course, that representatives of the candidate countries took part on equal terms. This enrichened the seminar considerably and gave it a progressive atmosphere. Last but not least, the meeting gave testimony, not only to the importance of creative artists in Europe but more specifically to how poorly they are rewarded for their creative work. Hence, a lot remains to be done in this area. We have many to thank for making the seminar possible. Our local hosts, the three artists centres in Visby: the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Visby International Centre for Composers, as well as the Gotland local authority and the County Administrative Board, who devoted much effort to the meeting.

IAML 2016 8 July 2016 Italian projects – Connecting libraries Luisa Zanoncelli The Levi Foundation and the role of musical libraries in the era of complexity The Fondazione Levi in Venice is an onlus (acronym for a non-profit organisation of social utility) whose charter concerns the promotion of music. Its three main initiatives include: || musicological and ethnomusicological research; concerts; studies in interpretation and post- graduate studies in musicology and ethnomusicology. Palazzo Giustinian Lolin Project: Baldassarre Longhena Research activities include, among other things, the diffusion of the Italian style in central- eastern Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Italian Ars nova, and liturgical chants of oral tradition; a more interdisciplinary prospective characterizes projects on the history of the criticism and theory of film scores, with the creation of a data-base that collects abstracts of the reviews of music for films that have appeared in cultural and specialized journals in the past century. More original synergies with the history of art and the history of collecting bring to light a study of the first Italian experiences in musical and visual performances, with the reconstruction of installations from the Seventies of three artists (Giuseppe Chiari, Claudio Ambrosini and Michele Sambin). The concerts are an occasion in which to distribute the results of the research on a vast scale, and to test the collaboration with the conservatory in Venice. A great number of people gather to enjoy the recital of ancient and rare music, with its uncommon repertories. With regards to course studies, the Fondazione Levi holds an annual course in voice and instruments of the fourteenth or fifteenth century, which differentiates itself from other specialization courses in interpretation in that it includes teaching modules in the philology of music, the history of musical notation, the history of music theory, which, from the following year, will be even more intensified.
