Printed in the U.S.A. 4 palace theater letter from the chairman n my role as Chairman of the Board of the Palace Theater, I I have the pleasure of presiding over this beautiful and valued performing arts center and watching it grow each year. This year is particularly exciting, as it is our 15th Anniversary year! Fifteen years ago, a group of dedicated local and state leaders organized to restore and reopen this historic facility. After an extensive renovation, we welcomed our first audience to take in the visual splendors of the theater—and the mellifluous tones of Tony Bennett’s voice. Over the past fifteen years, we have welcomed close to two million people, held over 1900 events and presentations and served as the premier arts and cultural destination for the Greater Waterbury community and its surrounding towns. We have achieved a great deal in fifteen years, with still so much opportunity for growth ahead. In addition to serving as a performance venue, a cultural center, a reception facility for special events and a community gathering place, we also serve as the performance home for the Waterbury Arts Magnet School. It is a pleasure to watch the evolution of young performers as they work to hone their craft both on and off stage. And it is gratifying to see their names appear in our playbills, as they pursue careers in theater, and return to their home stage while on tour. The Palace is still growing, and we are so grateful to have the support of you, our valued patrons. Each time you attend a performance, or provide financial support, you help us further our mission of supporting the cultural and educational needs of our community. On behalf of the Board and the staff, I thank you, whether you are a 15-year supporter, or a first-time visitor. Welcome to the Palace! Sincerely, Peter J. Jacoby, MD, FACEP Chairman of the Board palace theater 7 8 palace theater letter from the ceo t is with great pleasure that I can announce the 2020-2021 IWebster Broadway Series! This upcoming season will be a richly colored and inspired one, taking us to places like Imperial Russia and modern Israel—with stops across several decades in the U.S.A.! Our goal each year is to create a season that brings the best of Broadway to our community—and, as always, the heart of our Webster Broadway Series is the pairing of these exciting titles with you, our devoted subscribers and patrons. The 2020-2021 season begins with the popular musical Waitress! Based on the 2007 Indie film of the same name, and filled with Sara Bareilles’ melodious songs, this hilarious and uplifting show reflects on friendship, dreams and love—along with a generous serving of pie! The Band’s Visit, the 10-time 2018 Tony Award-winning musical, follows an Egyptian band to a small town in Israel, and celebrates the ways in which music crosses boundaries to bring joy and understanding to people of very different backgrounds. The story of The Band’s Visit can serve as an inspiration to us all! On the heels of this season’s successful production of A Bronx Tale: The Musical, we are bringing the original piece and actor to Waterbury! This non-musical offering is Chazz Palminteri’s one-man show, A Bronx Tale, which is the basis for the film and musical of the same name. Mr. Palminteri brings to life his autobiographical coming of age story in a tour de force performance. If you loved the musical, you’ll be enthralled by his solo performance! What better way to celebrate our Beautiful Palace than with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical? Certain to capture our hearts, this superb and joyous production presents the famed singer-songwriter’s life and music as she develops into the voice of a generation. Next spring, the glorious sights and sounds of Anastasia will transport us from 1916 Russia to 1920’s Paris, as a young woman sets out to solve the mystery of her past. With over a dozen new songs joining those from the animated film version, the show deftly combines adventure, romance and history. This Broadway production originated at Connecticut’s Hartford Stage and we are delighted to bring it here. Grab your dancing shoes and kick off your summer with Summer: The Donna Summer Musical! This upbeat, lively show will not only get us ready for the warmer months with its “Hot Stuff” and exuberant music and dancing, but will also bring out the Disco Diva in all of us! With these and even more offerings to be added to our season soon, we hope that the 2020- 2021 Webster Broadway Series will see you back at the Palace, enjoying our Beautiful Season! • The New Yorker
Kindle Edition, 2015 © The New Yorker COMMENT SEARCH AND RESCUE BY PHILIP GOUREVITCH On the evening of May 22, 1988, a hundred and ten Vietnamese men, women, and children huddled aboard a leaky forty-five-foot junk bound for Malaysia. For the price of an ounce of gold each—the traffickers’ fee for orchestrating the escape—they became boat people, joining the million or so others who had taken their chances on the South China Sea to flee Vietnam after the Communist takeover. No one knows how many of them died, but estimates rose as high as one in three. The group on the junk were told that their voyage would take four or five days, but on the third day the engine quit working. For the next two weeks, they drifted, while dozens of ships passed them by. They ran out of food and potable water, and some of them died. Then an American warship appeared, the U.S.S. Dubuque, under the command of Captain Alexander Balian, who stopped to inspect the boat and to give its occupants tinned meat, water, and a map. The rations didn’t last long. The nearest land was the Philippines, more than two hundred miles away, and it took eighteen days to get there. By then, only fifty-two of the boat people were left alive to tell how they had made it—by eating their dead shipmates. It was an extraordinary story, and it had an extraordinary consequence: Captain Balian, a much decorated Vietnam War veteran, was relieved of his command and court- martialled, for failing to offer adequate assistance to the passengers.

  • Here Are Ladies
Here are Ladies By James Stephens THREE HEAVY HUSBANDS I He had a high nose. He looked at one over the collar, so to speak. His regard was very assured, and his speech was that short bundle of monosyllables which the subaltern throws at the orderly. He had never been questioned, and, the precedent being absent, he had never questioned himself. Why should he? We live by question and answer, but we do not know the reply to anything until a puzzled comrade bothers us and initiates that divine curiosity which both humbles and uplifts us. He wanted all things for himself. What he owned he wished to own completely. He would give anything away with the largest generosity, but he would share with no one— "Whatever is mine," said he, "must be entirely mine. If it is alive I claim its duty to the last respiration of its breath, and if it is dead I cannot permit a mortgage on it. Have you a claim on anything belonging to me? then you may have it entirely, I must have all of it or none." He was a stockbroker, and, by the methods peculiar to that mysterious profession, he had captured a sufficiency of money to enable him to regard the future with calmness and his fellow-creatures with condescension— perhaps the happiest state to which a certain humanity can attain. So far matters were in order. There remained nothing to round his life into the complete, harmonious circle except a wife; but as a stated income has the choice of a large supply, he shortly discovered a lady whose qualifications were such as would ornament any, however exalted, position—She was sound in wind and limb.

The Jean Thomas Story—Part 3 Jean Thomas worked with many top producers during the 1960s but the one who cre- ated her best known work and who perhaps brought the best out of her vocal talent was Bob Crewe. Bob Crewe had a special talent himself and was a highly respected producer Jean’s good friend Ellie Greenwich had a good relation- ship with Bob Crewe and commented on his ability and on how they first met in an interview before her untimely passing in 2009….. "I'm not exactly sure when I met Bob Crewe, but we always saw each other around the business from the very beginning. (We) had an affinity for each other (and) still do! He was a joy to work with on all levels . he's a perfectionist, he's open to any outside ideas, he really knows what he wants and gets it, and most of all, he is passionate about what he does. He puts all of himself into eve- rything he touches . I always loved and still do love Bob! I can go on and on about this talented gentleman, and he is just that: A 'gentle man'." Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart captured the best of Bob Crewe’s productions on “The DynoVoice Story….the label that had to happen” Westside CD226 and say of his unique- ness …..“Bob Crewe is not a man to be easily pigeon-holed. Possessed by an overriding creative urge from his earliest years, he has painted , worked as a photographic model, sculpted, acted, run an art gallery and dabbled in interior design alongside those talents for which he is justly renowned – ie singer, songwriter, producer, label owner, music publisher and manager.” The best of his productions of course include those of Jean Tho- mas.

THE REST OF THE STORY Barrie and the Llewelyn-Davies boys visited Scourie Lodge, Sutherland—in northwestern Scotland—during August of 1911. In this group image we see Barrie with four of the boys together with their hostess. In the back row: George Llewelyn Davies (age 18), the Duchess of Sutherland and Peter Llewelyn Davies (age 14). In the front row: Nico Llewelyn Davies (age 7), J. M. Barrie (age 51) and Michael Llewelyn Davies (age 11). Online via Andrew Birkin and his J.M. Barrie website. After their mother's death, the five Llewelyn-Davies boys were alone. Who would take them in? Be a parent to them? Provide for their financial needs? Neither side of the family was really able to help. In 1976, Nico recalled the relief with which his uncles and aunts greeted Barrie's offer of assistance: ...none of them [the children's uncles and aunts] could really do anything approaching the amount that this little Scots wizard could do round the corner. He'd got more money than any of us and he's an awfully nice little man. He's a kind man. They all liked him a good deal. And he quite clearly had adored both my father and mother and was very fond of us boys.
