Arena tour this month Relix raves about Blind Pilot’s We Are The Tide “After their debut album 3 Rounds and a Sound in 2008 - a ramshackle affair whose loose and organic gestation proved indelibly charming - upbeat folk rockers Blind Pilot return with a much more calibrated effort. Wheras some bands fail to conjure the same musical alchemy the second time around, others - think ’s transition from A.M. to Being There - succeed in refining their sound with sacrificing the essential qualities that garnered them initial acclaim. Blind Pilot’s Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski fall into the latter with We Are The Tide. Nebeker’s vocals, which he often doubles for rich harmonies, remain at the fore and recall the inflection and lilt of Travis’ Fran Healy. Meanwhile, the accompanying instrumentation is precise and understated - a tasteful banjo or mandolin figure here, a cushioning keyboard or cello there - with Dobrowski’s assertive drumming keeping it all moving along at a steady clip. Whether it’s the bouyancy of “Half Moon,” the subtle Brit pop of “I Know” or the bittersweet sway of “Just One,” We Are The Tide is a consistent winner.” - Relix, October/November 2011 Blurting out love for Matthew Sweet’s Modern Art “In the years since releasing Girlfriend, something profound has happened to Mr. Matthew Sweet. A string of great and sometimes overlooked has culminated in the gem that is Modern Art. Yes, all the things fans would expect from a Matthew Sweet record are here; the jangly Byrds like guitar lines, the beautiful, near ethereal vocals and the random heavier tune. However, there is something different about Modern Art. There are deep soundscapes, mellotron, backward tape loops and the occasional sound effect that you can’t quite put your finger on. The unique jazz influenced drumming by comedian Fred Armisen drives “Ivory Tower” and lyrics throughout Mod- ern Art are equal parts Syd Barrett, Gram Parsons and Cat Stevens. All of these elements would be best appreciated with a pair of 1970’s earmuff headphones and a giant brick of hash. Modern Art is laced with great pop tunes like “” (with the lyric I’m stuck here in Baltimore/ while you roam free), a boogie woogie flavored number (“Ladyfingers”), a nod to the sound of power pop giants Big Star (“Late Nights with Power Pop”), reminiscing on a strange past and uncertain future (“Oh, Oldendaze!”) And the gorgeous grace of “When Love Let’s Go I Fall” is nothing short of classic Matthew Sweet. There are several references to changing times, lost chances and getting old on Modern Art that made me wonder if Mat- thew is feeling the pressure of Father Time bearing down on him or if he is a realist that has finally come to grips with and accepted his fate. Whatever the fuel, the songsmith has created sterling and a wonderfully adventurous record that is quite possibly his best since 1995’s 100% Fun.” - Blurt, 9/27/11 Ink19 wells up over The Duke & The King “If you can make it to the end of the The Duke & the King’s first cut “If You Ever Get Famous” without a lump in your throat, mister, you’re a better man than I. Softly spoken vocals glide atop bells, ushering you in until you’re transfixed, and you don’t know if the song is about a warning from the singer -- or one given to him. Truly haunting. Then you follow it up with “Shaky,” which has the classic line “The Jackson 5 grew up so fast” -- think about that for a while as the music grooves. This self-titled record, made up from 2009’s Nothing Gold Can Stay and 2010’s Long Live the Duke & the King, is a showcase of Simone Felice (ex-Felice Brothers) and Robert “Bird” Burke, (ex-George Clinton and Garry Shider p-funker) along with Simi Stone and Nowell Haskins. If you didn’t know from where or when this came, you’d say 1969 and Crosby, Stills and Nash, or the acoustic journeys of Neil Young, or maybe Muscle Shoals and “Southern Soul,” with a little of the Avett Brothers’ I and Love and You (which Felice contributed on) mixed in. The group sounds timeless, or at least far more wizened than their years -- they know what makes the music tick, and do it effortlessly. This might be your first hearing of The Duke & the King. I doubt will be your last.” - Ink19, September 2011 Upcoming... 10/10: Graffiti6 “Free,” Peter Gabriel - New Blood album... 10/17: Ben Lee “Get Used To It” Listen to everything and find out more at www.rightarmresource.com as well as facebook.com/rightarmresource or twitter.com/rightarmjesse RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 9/28/11
