(91.4 x 121.9 cm) signed lower right; signed, titled & dated verso One of Canada’s most beloved painters, Edward Hardy (Ted) Harrrison was born in the village of Wingate In County Durham, . His talent was evident early in life, and he was encouraged by his parents (particularly his mother) and teachers to attend art school. In 1943, Harrison enrolled in Hartlepool College of Art, but his studies were interrupted by WWII, during which time he served in India, Egypt and East Africa as part of the Intelligence Unit of the British Army. Following his military service, Harrison completed his Diploma in Design (1950) and a subsequent Art Teacher Diploma at King’s College, University of Durham (1951). Harrison soon began what would be a 28 year career in teaching. Along with his wife and son, he travelled to Malaysia and New Zealand before arriving in Canada in 1967. He initially taught in the Northern Alberta town of Wabasca, before settling in the small town of Carcross, Yukon Territories in 1968. In 1969, Ted Harrison held his first Canadian exhibition in the Whitehorse Library. His first major Canadian exhibition followed in 1970, at Robertson Galleries, in Ottawa. Harrison completed a BA at the in 1977, and retired from teaching in 1980 in order to pursue his art career full-time, moving to Victoria in 1993. Ted Harrison is known for his bold, colourful, and rhythmic paintings, depicting the landscape and everyday scenes of the Yukon. He has gained international recognition for his paintings, which can be found in many public and private collections, as well as for his children’s stories and illustrations. Ted Harrison received many honours during his career: He designed the visuals for the entrance to the Yukon Pavilion at Expo 86; designed a Canada Post Christmas stamp in 1996; received the Order of Canada in 1987 and the Order of British Columbia in 2008; was awarded an honourary doctorate from the University of Athabasca and from Malaspina College, a distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Alberta and an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from the University of Victoria. 44 Daphne Odjig Canadian, Anashinabe RCA [1919-2016] COMMUNING WITH THE INFANTS; 1985 acrylic on canvas 24 x 20 in. (61 x 50.8 cm) signed lower right; titled on the stretcher and dated on the canvas verso Daphne Odjig’s work is often associated with the Woodland School and reflects the artistic influence of both European Modernism and the artist’s Anashinabe heritage, yet her distinct style defies categorization. Odjig resists the labeling of her art, whether as Woodland, “Indian”, feminist or political: “My art is my primary statement”. Her images are the product of deeply personal and spiritual forces: “For me it has been an endless source of delight and wonderment that awareness, thought and recognition can come seemingly unbidden from an inner source....Every artist, either wittingly or unwittingly, must draw on this eternal source which is both practical and mystical.” This compelling work, from a mature and accomplished period of Odjig’s career, bears the thematic and stylistic imagery that has become the hallmark of her work. Two groups of sheltered figures are cradled by the protective limbs and canopy of the trees; the night sky above is tranquil and mystical. In this lyrical work, the individual elements come together to demonstrate the balance and synergy that exist between nature, culture and spirituality. Daphne Odjig was the first female First Nations artist to be featured in a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. Organized by the Art Gallery of Sudbury, “The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition” (October 2009 to January 2010) showcased works spanning a long and accomplished career. $ 12,000 / 15,000

90 Frederick Arthur Verner Canadian OSA, RCA [1836-1928] BUFFALO...ROCKY MOUNTAINS; 190? oil on canvas 19 x 35 in. (48.3 x 88.9 cm) signed & dated lower right; signed & titled verso and on the exhibition label Provenance: Johnson Art Galleries, Montreal QC Exhibited: Royal Canadian Academy (Montreal Exhibition) Literature: “The Last Buffalo: The Story of Frederick Arthur Verner, Painter of the Canadian West” (Joan Murray; Pagurian Press; 1984). Refer to pages 136 and 145 for examples of similar works (dating from 1909 and 1906 respectively). One of very few painters of the era born in Ontario, Verner is known for his interpretations of the majestic Prairie Bison and Indigenous life in early Canada. Verner exhibited widely during his long career: with the Royal Canadian Academy (from its founding in 1880 until his death in 1928); with the Ontario Society of Artists (1872- 1922); with the Art Association on Montreal (1872-1922); and he exhibited regularly overseas. Verner began studying the Plains Buffalo early in his career, initially using books, illustrations and artwork as source material. By the time Verner made his first trip West, the animals had virtually disappeared from the Prairies. An early painting titled “The Stampede”, by American artist William Jacob Hays, impressed Verner and initiated his fascination with the animals and a dedication to painting them in earnest. Bison would become a favoured subject for the remaining 66 years of the artist’s life. In 1875, Verner began to draw bison from life, studying them and creating sketches for future use, often in zoos or wild west shows. Unlike other early Western and American artists, Verner did not portray the Bison in hunting scenes, rather preferring to depict them as he imagined they would have been in their free and natural state. $ 25,000 / 35,000 hodginsauction.com Fall 2020 Art Auction Monday, November 30th @ 7 p.m. MT (staggered soft close)

96 Illingworth Holey (Buck) Kerr Canadian ASA, BCSA, FCA, RCA [1905-1989] ELBOW RIVER FALLS; 1987 oil on canvas 36 x 48 in. (91.4 x 121.9 cm) monogrammed lower right; signed, titled & dated on the stretcher verso Provenance: Formerly from the corporate collection of Home Oil Ltd. / Devon Energy (Calgary AB) Kerr was drawn to art as a boy, growing up in Lumsden, . His first teacher was his mother, a watercolour artist, who encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. At age 14, the young artist entered a number of his works in the Regina Exhibition of 1919, earning 13 first prize awards, and gaining the confidence to go further. Kerr received his formal training in Toronto, at the Ontario College of Art (1923-1927), where his instructors included Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, , and William Beatty. While the approach to painting was not expressly taught at OCA, Kerr was exposed to the ideals and philosophy of the Group. While in Toronto, he attended exhibitions and visited several studios, including those of A. Y. Jackson and . Kerr was inspired to apply this non-traditional, emotive, and uniquely Canadian approach to landscape painting in Western Canada. During his life, Kerr not only became an accomplished and respected artist, but an influential instructor and mentor for new generations of artists. In 1946, he accepted a teaching position at the Vancouver School of Art, and the following year moved to Calgary to head the Art Department at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now Alberta University of the Arts). Under his 20-year tenure, was largely responsible for the development of art education in Calgary. This responsibility and commitment constrained Kerr, and he was not able to paint full time until his retirement in 1967. At this stage, Kerr was able to approach his art with the freedom and perspective of a mature artist. He experimented with abstraction, with colour and brushwork, and finally began to feel personal satisfaction with his work, having gained the understanding that “the essence of a work of art is the product of a personality”. In his reflections, Kerr writes: “Some say, ‘Your subject does not matter; it’s what you do to it.’ I say what matters is what your subject does to you”. Nowhere is this clearer, that in Kerr’s nocturnes. During these later years, Kerr truly mastered the nuanced palette of the nocturne, blending hues to alternately elicit light and darken shadows. In this iconic scene of Elbow Falls, the starlight illuminates the rushing water and plays dramatically off the dark riverbanks. Kerr has embraced the black ground upon which he richly layers colour. Kerr wrote: “Black offered its void of space from which to move forward - or into which to retreat when external appearance of form threatened to mask the personality beneath”. Kerr’s late nocturnes are sublime renderings that succeed in capturing mood, atmosphere and the essence of a moment in a way unmatched by earlier works. A member of the New New Painters, the artist identifies with “process painting” or the “fluid school”, as associated with American abstractionist Jackson Pollack. In the early 1980s Peacock developed an inventive and personal painting style that involved freely pouring customized acrylics in layers. By not allowing each layer to fully cure during the process, he created separation and crazing at the surface, revealing the depth and contrast of the layers below. Graham Peacock has an international exhibition history spanning more than 50 years. 134 Chris Cran Canadian RCA [b. 1949] WALL WITH PORTRAIT AND CURTAIN; 2006 oil and acrylic on canvas 48 x 48 in. (121.9 x 121.9 cm) signed, titled & dated verso Provenance: TrepanierBaer Gallery, Calgary AB Note: from the series “Pop Paintings” Exhibited: “Chris Cran, Sincerely Yours” (cat. no. 58): Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton AB (September 15, 2015-January 3, 2016); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa ON (May 20-September 5, 2016). This work is illustrated on page 106 (plate 58) of the book published in conjunction with the exhibition: “Chris Cran, Sincerely Yours” (National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; 2016). The theme of framing devices recurs in Chris Cran’s work, as the artist explores the ways in which perception is framed, both by our actual field of vision, and by external devices that manipulate and draw attention to what we see: i.e. a window; a curtain; an archway; a camera lens; the frame of a painting etc. In this work, “Wall with Portrait and Curtain”, a framed portrait of a man’s face appears to be hung against a green wall. Cran reframes and shifts our view by employing the swathe of dark drapery along the left edge of the canvas, pulled back to theatrical effect. The portrait of choice is a familiar one for Cran, one reminiscent of a 1950s advertisement or catalogue, done in a halftone technique that pays homage to Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement. On the surface, the work is a painting of a painting of his rendering of a mass-media image. The effect is that it challenges the viewer’s perspective and beliefs about how we view art. $ 10,000 / 15,000 hodginsauction.com Fall 2020 Art Auction Monday, November 30th @ 7 p.m. MT (staggered soft close)

135 Chris Cran Canadian RCA [b. 1949] CRUCIFIXION (STRIPE PAINTINGS); 1989 oil and acrylic on wood panel 48 x 12 in. (121.9 x 30.5 cm) signed & dated verso Note: Chris Cran developed his process for the Stripe Paintings series in 1989, and subsequent series have used the same innovative technique. The artist first prepares and paints the board or canvas with a flat layer of unmodulated paint. He then extends strips of tape across the entire surface. Using photographic or print source material, Cran then paints a monochromatic image on top of the taped surface, which he softens and blurs with a brushing technique while the paint is still wet. Once the tape is removed (an experience the artist likens to “opening a Christmas present”) the image transforms, taking on depth and an aura of colour. The viewer is compelled to reconstruct the now interrupted image, and the optical effect created by the oscillating field of stripes is, paradoxically, one of veiling the image. $ 3,000 / 5,000

198 Maxwell Bennett Bates Canadian ASA, CGP, CSGA, CSPWC, RCA [1906-1980] HEAD OF A WOMAN; 1952 oil on board 24 x 18 in. (61 x 45.7) signed & dated lower right; signed & titled verso Provenance: The Hett Gallery, Edmonton AB Note: Illustrated on page 256 of “Maxwell Bates: Biography of an Artist” (Kathleen Snow; Press; 1993). In January of 1946 Maxwell Bates returned to Calgary, ending a bitter-sweet 15 year absence, which begun as a formative artistic journey and ended with five challenging years as a prisoner of war. During these post-war years, Bates moved to quickly reinstate himself as an artist and architect. Within one year of his re- turn, his work was showcased in a one-man show at Canadian Art Galleries, with additional gallery exhibitions to follow. It was through Canadian Art Galleries that Bates met May Watson (Nielsen), a bright and accomplished professional woman (and art lover), who walked into the gallery during a return visit to Alberta from her home in New York. She was drawn to a portrait of a woman wearing a decorative hat, and asked to meet the artist. The two struck up a friendship and soon Bates moved with her to New York (in 1949), where they soon married. It was during this time that Maxwell Bates studied with expressionist Max Beckmann at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York, a like-minded artist whom he admired. Max and May Bates returned to Calgary in 1950, where they were now both active in the art community. Sadly, May had a stroke in 1951 and after a period of failing health, died in June of 1952. This work “Head of a Woman” was painted during May’s illness, and is most likely her portrait. It is certainly a sentimental homage to the piece that first brought them together. $ 6,000 / 8,000
