Wedding destination with a difference If you dream of getting married in Turkey, then the country offers an array of idyllic locations to tie the knot. Narrow down on the perfect venue based on the preferred theme, size and fanfare for the joyous occasion. Tucked away from the city of Istanbul, Antalya houses some of the finest hotels and resorts in Turkey, suitable for an elegant wedding. The resort village Ölüdeniz is perfect for a beach wedding. Take vows on a hot air balloon over Cappadocia, renowned for its fairy chimneys. It houses many private properties but if you are looking for an unusual experience, then the Goreme Open Air Museum (a UNESCO World Heritage site) is something to consider for a private affair.

All for love This country is an excellent location for honeymooners. You can visit the Turquoise Riviera along the Turkish coast exuding romance, a perfect getaway for couples. Travel up to Antalya’s Mount Tahtali in a cable car to gaze at the panoramic views of the coastline and the Taurus Mountains. You won’t truly enjoy this country without trying the famous hamam or Turkish bath at Suleymaniye Hamami in Istanbul. Turkey has crystal clear lakes and pine-clad valleys for an exotic honeymoon. Revel in the hidden wonders of Basilica Cistern, this amazing underground waterway was once used by the Byzantine royals. The dramatic ambience coupled with the classical sounds that echo around the Cistern will surely spark the romantic vibes.

Blue wonder An Istanbul landmark Sultan Ahmet Mosque, popularly known as Blue Mosque, is an architectural marvel. It is one of the most majestic Ottoman mosques in Turkey famous for its slender minarets and an impressive collection of domes surrounded by an enormous internal courtyard. Ablaze with 20,000 delicate blue Iznik tiles, the Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 by the architect Mehmet Ağa on the instruction of Sultan Ahmet I. It was designed as an imperial show of strength to complement Hagia Sophia. Although much of the original complex was torn down in the 19th century, it still remains one of the most stunning mosques in Turkey.

Throne of the Gods Eastern Turkey’s prime attraction, Mount Nemrut’s summit funerary mound now has the broken remnants of once enormous statues, which guarded it. This weird and solitary place is a one of its kind archaeological site in Turkey constructed by King Antiochus I in 62 BC. Enjoy an eerie atmosphere over the barren mountain top. The giant stone heads of the Greek and Persian gods, including ones of Apollo and Zeus, capture your attention instantly. The best time to visit Mount Nemrut is at sunrise, so you can gaze at the statues as they loom out of the dark. With passing years, almost all the statues have lost their heads, which fell off owing to frequent earthquakes or iconoclasm.

Exciting experiences Turkey is soon turning into one of the top holiday destinations for adventure seekers. There are tons of thrilling activities to explore including rafting, surfing, diving, rock and mountain climbing. Çoruh River takes rafters and kayakers through deep gorges and valleys, orchards, villages and ruined fortresses. It is thankfully unadulterated by tourism. Although the Lake District is incredibly remote, it’s a challenging yet satisfying mountain biking terrain. Along the way there are quaint village roads, forest covered tracks and dirt roads till you reach the vast summer grazing grounds. If kite-surfing is your thing, then head to Alaçati, it’s a well-preserved former Greek village on the Çesme Peninsula. Kas, a seaside town on the Mediterranean coast, is famed as a multi-activity family holiday spot.

Cruising the Mediterranean There is so much to discover by cruise in this enchanting country; take a trip of the ruined castles and palaces in the old cities or unwind on the beaches with the warm Mediterranean waters. Whilst cruising Turkey, you may be intrigued by its sheer diversity, elaborate history and vibrant culture. The shore excursions will let you discover it all. Bodrum and Fethiye are on the wish list of many tourists while cruising on a yacht. At the Topkapi Palace, see the expansive porcelain collection, the throne room and clothing worn by the former Ottoman empires. The steep forest-clad slopes, white sand beaches and hundreds of scattered islands are best explored by sea.

Grand Bazaar The Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. Since its inception in the 14th century, the market has only grown and now covers around 61 of Istanbul’s streets and has almost 4,000 stallholders. The ladies can shop their heart out with options such as beaded bracelets, gold and silver jewellery, curly-toed slippers, belly-dancing outfits and more. It can take days for visitors to fully explore this buzzing bazaar. The good part is that you can go home with truckloads of essentials, gifts and souvenirs. A favourite among tourists, you can find dried fruits, nuts, tea, coffee and traditional decor, Turkish lights, rugs and candles in its many lanes.

Rome of the North Germany’s oldest city lies on the banks of the pristine Moselle, not far from Luxembourg. The City of Trier was founded by the Roman emperor Augustus in 16 B.C as a Roman colony and soon became Roman emperors’ favoured place to reside. It celebrated its 2,000th birth anniversary in 1984! If you wish to experience Roman flavour in Germany, then look no further and head to Trier. It is a walkable town and most of its key sights lie within easy reach of the old city centre. But there is also a special tourist mini-train (called the Römer Express) that takes the visitors on a 35-minute tour of Trier’s Altstadt (old town). Apart from being a treasure trove of Roman ruins, it is also the birthplace of Karl Marx.

Walking through the woods Think of the Black Forest and the spiky peaks, clear streams, picturesque mountain pine and babbling brooks comes to mind. Followed by the soft clump of boots on the mossy forest soil, experience all this and more at Schwarzwald or the Black Forest as you walk or take a drive around.
