ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY I realize and acknowledge that this event is a foot race over rugged, narrow, unpaved, mountainous, rocky, steep and twisting course which is not designed for crowds. The 110th Running of the Dipsea Race will be Sunday, November 7, 2021. Each entrant receives headstart minutes based upon age and gender. There are two race sections. The Invitational section starts promptly at 8:00 am. The Runner section starts promptly at RACE: 8:27 am. The course is from Lytton Square in downtown Mill Valley, through Muir Woods, around the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais and down to the finish line at Stinson Beach. The course will be marked, but potential race leaders should familiarize themselves with the route. The distance is approximately 7.5 miles. The course is open except at certain noted locations. Accepted runners will be mailed pertinent information.

To alleviate crowded conditions on the trail we must limit the fields to 1,500 entrants, 700 in the Invitational Section and 800 in the ELIGIBILITY: Runner Section. Unregistered runners will not be permitted to start or finish the race. Athletes under 18 years of age must have a parent’s or guardian’s signature on their entry form and must have a parent or guardian at the race. Because the course is narrow and rugged, responsibility for children lies with the parents or guardians. We recommend first time entrants familiarize themselves with the trail before race day. 10 DIPSEA BRIDGE FUNDRAISER CREEK MUIR WOODS LET THE FUNDRAISING BEGIN!!! For years now you’ve been making your way across the creek on the two rickety planks the rangers so graciously install every year, or running through the creek. Now is your chance the join in the construction of the new Dipsea Bridge across Redwood Creek in Muir Woods. It’s high time to stop walking “The Plank.” For decades, since the legendary rain storms and floods of late 1981 and early 1982 washed away the last permanent bridge over Redwood Creek on the Dipsea Trail in Muir ,Woods, the National Park Service has sought to replace it with another structure that could withstand

another such natural disaster and provide a safe and convenient straight forward path from the Muir Woods Road parking lot to the “Dynamite” section of the Dipsea Trail without the threat of getting wet. Now you can help. The Dipsea Race Foundation is accepting donations to build the 120-foot suspension foot bridge over Redwood Creek that connects the famed Dipsea Trail. The bridge, which is part of the National Park Service’s $1.2 million Redwood Renewal Sustainable Access Project, is now in the design phase. For the time being, hikers and Dipsea runners will continue to cross Redwood Creek at Muir Woods on a wooden plank, which is removed whenever the weather forecast calls for significant rain during the so-called rainy season, which can run from late fall to early spring. “ Not only do we not want it to wash away or be slippery and dangerous, but also there's fish passage to be concerned about,” says Mia Monroe, Marin Community Liaison and Outdoor Recrea- tion Planner for the Planning and Environmental Division of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. “Over the decades there have been several serious discussions to assist NPS with design, hy- drologic studies, material purchase and the actual location guided both by history and most sensitive placement. Although there was a short period of time when the race course was a bit further up- stream, the current -- and maybe historic -- location has been deemed most suitable so plans are pro- ceeding to locate a permanent bridge there.” According to “Dipsea: The Greatest Race” by Dipsea historian Barry Spitz, the current foot- bridge -- or plank -- was built in 1974 after a campaign led by famed Marin nature instructor Elizabeth Terwilliger. When erected, it bore the sign `No Running On Bridge,’ so some Dipsea race runners con- tinued to splash through Redwood Creek. Before World War II, runners crossed Redwood Creek on a different bridge about 100 yards upstream. Because the current bridge – or plank – is low, it needs to be removed because, says Ranger Monroe, “if rains swell the channel it will get washed downstream. Then the signal to replace it is after salmon/steelhead hatching from nearby gravels, which often can be as late as June.” 11 BRIDGE When the bridge/plank is removed hikers and runners are forced to take a half mile detour left on Muir Woods Road to the base of the Dipsea Fire Trail and cross Redwood Creek there where it can be a perilous proposition. The Dipsea Race Foundation is now accepting donations to build the 120-foot suspension foot bridge over Redwood Creek that connects the famed Dipsea Trail. The bridge, which is part of the National Park Service’s Redwood Renewal Sustainable Access Project, is now in the design phase. For more information or to volunteer contact [email protected]

WOMENS DIPSEA HIKE In celebration of Women’s and Dipsea His- tory Celebration Month in March 2022, the Dipsea Race Committee is organizing a tribute event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the final Women’s Dipsea Hike, last held in 1922 and first contested in 1918 when women were discouraged from participating in running competitions and barred from the then male-only Dipsea race. The centennial Women’s Dipsea Hike ob- servance is tentatively scheduled for Saturday morning, April 30, 2022 starting in Old Mill Park in Mill Valley and following the Dipsea Trail before ending in Stinson Beach State Park. The Dipsea Race Committee is in the be- ginning stages of creating a women’s hike applica- tion and is seeking volunteers – men and women to assist Women’s Dipsea Hike participants on the Dipsea Trail during the event. Festivities being planned for the event include a period dress cos- tume contest in Old Mill Park prior to the start of the Women’s Dipsea Hike. In 2018, the Dipsea Race Committee or- ganized a centennial celebration of the first Wo- men’s Dipsea Hike and the tribute attracted near- ly 500 participants from eight states as far a- way as Maine, Texas, and Alaska. The Women’s Dipsea Hike in 1918 was believed to be the first- ever cross-country sporting event in the United States organized exclusively for women. The final Women’s Dipsea Hike was in 1922, the year when event organizer George Willow Camp 1921 James of the Olympic Club passed away. 12 DIPSEA KIDZ When I sat down to write updates about Dipsea We found an area easily accessible for Kidz from the past two seasons.
