Translating mimesis of orality: Robert Frost’s poetry in Catalan and Italian Marcello Giugliano TESI DOCTORAL UPF / ANY 2012 DIRECTORS DE LA TESI Dra. Victòria Alsina Dr. Dídac Pujol DEPARTAMENT DE TRADUCCIÓ I CIÈNCIES DEL LLENGUATGE Ai miei genitori Acknowledgements My first thank you goes to my supervisors, Dr. Victòria Alsina and Dr. Dídac Pujol. Their critical guidance, their insightful comments, their constant support and human understanding have provided me with the tools necessary to take on the numerous challenges of my research with enthusiasm. I would also like to thank Dr. Jenny Brumme for helping me to solve my many doubts on some theoretical issues during our long conversations, in which a smile and a humorous comment never failed. My special thanks are also for Dr. Luis Pegenaute, Dr. José Francisco Ruiz Casanova, and Dr. Patrick Zabalbeascoa for never hiding when they met me in the corridors of the faculty or never diverting their eyes in despair. Thank you for always being ready to give me recommendations and for patiently listening to my only subject of conversation during the last four years. During the project, I have had the privilege to make two research stays abroad. The first, in 2009, in Leuven, Belgium, at the Center for Translation Studies (CETRA), and the second in 2010 at the Translation Center of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA. I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to my tutors there, Dr. Reine Meylaerts and Dr. Maria Tymoczko respectively, for their tutoring and for offering me the chance to attend classes and seminars during my stay there, converting that period into a fruitful and exciting experience.

IMPRINT Imprint © 2013 Smashing Magazine GmbH, Freiburg, Germany ISBN: 978-3-94454027-6 Cover Design: Ricardo Gimenes eBook Strategy and Editing: Vitaly Friedman Technical Editing: Cosima Mielke Planning and Quality Control: Vitaly Friedman, Iris Lješnjanin Tools: Elja Friedman. Syntax Highlighting: Prism by Lea Verou. Idea & Concept: Smashing Magazine GmbH Preface As Jeremy Olson states in one of the chapters of this eBook, “I believe we learn much more from success than from failure. It took Edison thousands of failed attempts to invent the electric light bulb, and it would be foolish to reinvent it based on trial and error, now that we have a working model.” The same holds true for Web design. After all, is there anything more insightful than learning about the workflows from fellow designers and developers, and what techniques they use? What made their projects a stunning success, and how do they over- come missteps? With this eBook, we’ll take a closer look at the tech- niques and stories of some folks behind real-life Web projects. Among others, you will discover how renowned projects such as the Financial Times Web app or the Nike Better World website were built, and learn from the success story of a translation app that made it into Apple’s top ten charts. You’ll also get an insight into Google’s User Ex- perience Lab, and (illustrated by the example of Pinterest) explore the importance of paint performance. Furthermore, our authors share valu- able lessons learned in the course of their careers—from both successes and failures. This eBook is full of handy tips, ideas, and personal experi- ences that are beneficial to any Web professional.

The Ohio State University, Ph.D„ 1966 Language and Literature, modern University Microfilms, Inc., Ann Arbor, Michigan (c-j Copyright by Betty Cheney Thalmann 1967 EL LIBtiC DE ALEXANDRE: A STYLISTIC APPROACH DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University Betty Cheney Thalmann, B.A., M.A* * * * * * * * The Ohio State University 1966 Approved by Adviser Department of Romance Languages PREFACE The real study of the Id-bro de Alexandre begins at the point of acknowledgment of borrowed, elements* The anonymous poet is un original in the modern-day sense, but original in his presentation and means of expression. His subject deals with a composite figure of history and legend from both the classical and Oriental worlds. His immediate source is a twelfth-century Latin text, the Alexandre is of Gautier de Ghfitillon; many non-historical aspects come from the Old French poem, Le roman d'Alexandre; and some fantastic episodes correspond to those found in an Arabic version of the exemplar hero, Dulcamain. This study is primarily an investigation of the craftsmanship of the unknown poet of the Osuna (or 0) manuscript. This thirteenth- century manuscript and the later Paris manuscript of the fifteenth century were examined to determine which of the two was artistically superior; Professor Raymond S. Willis1 paleographic edition of 19 3h was used for the comparison,^ The preference for 0 is based on obser vations that, although both 0 and P show a refinement of style remark able at such an early date in Spanish literature, 0 consistently demon strates a greater sensitivity to sound for euphonic, structural, and suggestive purposes.
