Over the past 50 years, the College developed postgraduate programmes to address the need of our family doctors. Through education and advocacy, our family physicians have been trained and empowered to provide the best care for our patients. Our trained family doctors can now be found serving in various settings, in primary care, in community hospitals and even in general hospitals. Many are in leadership positions in our healthcare system, and all have played crucial roles in our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, providing surveillance, early detection and timely treatment. To commemorate our 50th anniversary, we worked closely with SingPost on a series of stamps that showcase the achievements and contributions of our family doctors in Singapore. This series of 6 stamps depict our family doctors in various settings, be it in acute medical, chronic disease management, health promotion, community hospital care, pandemic response and medical education and research. We are indeed proud of our achievements over the past 50 years, and look forward to making even greater contributions to our healthcare services. Work of the 27th Council (2019-2021) The 27th Council has now completed its second year of office. Much has been achieved and we look forward to many more initiatives in the near future for the advancement of Family Medicine. The report of the work done is presented in this annual report. 2021 being an election year will see the election of the 28th Council. We are now in our second year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The College and its members have had their fair share of challenges. The College Council has been at the forefront of many of our national initiatives, fulfilling key roles in keeping our health system running optimally. Despite the demands of current healthcare challenges, our 50th anniversary presents an opportune moment to showcase the achievements and contributions of family doctors in Singapore, in this case with a series of First Day Cover stamps that was launched on 30th June 2021. We wish to thank SingPost for this beautiful set of stamps which depicts the many faces of Family Medicine in Singapore today. Our Council members and dedicated volunteers continue to provide invaluable Primary Care perspectives in many initiatives and committees. The College has committed to representing the interests of the family physicians and GPs, and I am especially proud of the 27th Council, and humbled to have the privilege to serve with them. Membership The membership of the College as of 31st March 2021 is 2624, increased from 2534 in 2020. This steady increase in membership is encouraging, and gives us confidence to represent and promote the primary care community. 15 new Fellows were admitted in 2020, taking the total of Fellows to 210. We now have 362 Collegiate members, an addition of 21. GDFM holders now stand at 1463, with 137 passing in 2020. The College will continue to train and support our family physicians in their training through our various programmes in Family Medicine. Assets College continues to be in good financial standing. However, as a not-for-profit organisation that does not receive any government funding, prudent financial management is essential to ensure that the College has the resources to continue its activities, and to advance the practice of Family Medicine. 64 College of Family Physicians Singapore ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021 Courses conducted The GDFM, MMed(FM) College Programme and Fellowship of the College of Family Physicians Singapore (By Assessment) (FCFPS) continue to do well. The curriculum and delivery of these programmes have been constantly reviewed and improved over the years. The team successfully implemented distance learning by webinars in spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic. As our healthcare care system evolves at an ever-increasing rate, the College has likewise had to evolve and improve our courses to better meet the needs of our trainees and doctors. Partnerships The 3 medical professional bodies (PBs), the College, the Singapore Medical Association and the Academy of Medicine Singapore, continue to work closely on various projects affecting healthcare in Singapore.

Using single worm lifespan assays, we discovered that males live significantly shorter after mating in both androdioecious (male and hermaphroditic) and gonochoristic (male and female) Caenorhabditis. Germline-dependent shrinking, glycogen loss, and ectopic expression of vitellogenins contribute to male post-mating lifespan reduction, which is conserved between the sexes. In addition to mating-induced lifespan decrease, worms are subject to killing by male pheromone-dependent toxicity. C. elegans males are the most sensitive, whereas C. remanei are immune, suggesting that males in androdioecious and gonochoristic species utilize male pheromone differently as a toxin or a chemical messenger. Our study reveals two mechanisms involved in male lifespan regulation: germline-dependent shrinking and death is the result of an unavoidable cost of reproduction and is evolutionarily conserved, whereas male pheromone-mediated killing provides a novel mechanism to cull the male population and ensure a return to the self-reproduction mode in androdioecious species. Our work highlights the importance of understanding the shared vs. sex- and species- specific mechanisms that regulate lifespan.

Knechtges Department of Asian Languages and Literature This dissertation is a study of Yang Xiong’s (53 BCE–18 CE) Taixuan jing that attempts to incorporate philological methods with philosophical insights by situating the text within the intellectual and historical context of the late Eastern Han. Secondarily, it is a response to the modern suggestion that the Taixuan jing paved the way for Wei-Jin xuanxue movement, and thus seeks to probe the limits of the extent of this claim with an investigation into Yang Xiong’s mentor Zhuang Zun (83 BCE–ca. 6 CE) and the Jingzhou school established under the auspices of Liu Biao (144-208). While most studies have taken the Taixuan jing as an imitation of the Zhou yi, I have argued that if we are to truly understand Yang Xiong’s project we must break free of this preconception and look at it in its own right. That is, the Taixuan is not merely an imitation i of the Zhou yi, but that of a higher, transcendental truth which I have called the “absolute” that is expressed through image, parallel prose, and verse.
