Public libraries in particular must rethink their role, services and priorities. If we are to believe that information really is at our fingertips, ‘providing access’ may well be replaced by ‘facilitating knowledge’ as the core business of the libraries. And a range of services related to the library as a meeting place, a space for informal learning, cultural activities and events should be created. With the present publication we wish to introduce new public library services based to a great extent on new social technologies and on the idea of including and involving citizens in an active way in line with the overall challenge. What these services have in common is that they have been developed in Nordic public libraries, and they are thus building on a Nordic tradition for public enlightenment. The book is the result of a collaboration between the Nordic public library authorities: Danish Agency for Libraries and Media, Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland, Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority and Swedish Arts Council. The same authorities are also the publishers of Scandinavian Public Library Quarterly. In all our publications we aim at sharing ideas and experiences for the benefit of library development. We invite you to follow further developments in this journal. The present work is published with a view to being presented to the participants at the annual IFLA Conference in Gothenburg in 2010. Fourth St. Williamsport, PA 17701 www.jvbrown.edu FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Bookmobile books provided by the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A collection of new children’s non-fiction books were purchased for the Lycoming County Mobile Library through the generosity of the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation. The Foundation, in its 50th year of service, provides literacy grants that support book purchases used specifically for bookmobile programs that serve disadvantaged children. The Lycoming County Bookmobile was one of only a dozen organizations awarded a grant for the 2017-2018 period. With the assistance of local library supplier Brodart, a collection of children’s non-fiction materials were professionally curated to meet the standards of Pennsylvania’s academic focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education. “Information literacy is crucial and yet informational texts can lose relevance quickly,” said Kevin Renehan, county services manager for the James V. Brown Library. “Unlike the timeless status of many fictional children’s books, we have to work harder to keep our non-fiction updated and contemporary.” The Bookmobile makes stops at multiple private and public elementary schools in Lycoming County, as well as local community centers, nursing homes, day cares, child care facilities, services offering support for people with disabilities, and low-income housing. “In a county of our size, the largest in the state – mobile libraries support Pennsylvania’s initiative to provide social and civic literacy to our underserved and rural communities. This non-fiction book grant from the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation supports our mission to meet those educational needs,” Renehan said.

In the United States, public libraries have been woven into the social and spatial fabric of neighborhood life, whether urban, suburban, or rural, and they enjoy immense popularity: According to a 2014 study from the Pew Research Center (2014), 54 percent of people in the United States use a public library each year, 72 percent of people live in a household with a regular library user, and libraries are viewed as important community resources by 91 percent of people.     Bookmobile/Outreach Service Librarian Garrard County Public Library Job Summary: The Bookmobile Librarian will be the outreach representative of the library, taking services to those unable to come to the main library. The Bookmobile Librarian will be responsible to the Director in matters of finance and final decisions as to route and major bookmobile maintenance. However, routine maintenance of the bookmobile will be the responsibility of the Bookmobile Librarian. Job Duties: Essential job responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to: Maintain a route schedule that takes the bookmobile into all sections of the county, where large groups of people may be served who otherwise many not receive library service, e. g. schools, nursing homes, Sr. Citizen Center, Housing Projects, etc. Keep the bookmobile, as the library, in order by constant attention to both content and arrangement of bookshelves; also by careful attention to problems if circulation, including overdue. Select items from library collection to take to bookmobile; return items to library as needed. Maintain balanced collections for patron’s needs and wants. Be responsible for route maintenance of the bookmobile and also weekly cleaning inside the bookmobile. Keep records of circulation and mechanical maintenance and provide them to the Head Librarian, Keep, as much as possible, the bookmobile on the road four days each of the two week schedule. The extra Friday or Monday will be used for working in the library. Assist in Library during any working hours that the bookmobile is not able to run or is not scheduled to run. When route is finished for the day, assist in main library where needed.
