Wetlands cover 6% area of total earth surface but they support vast variety of floral and faunal diversity. It also serves as source of economy to native peoples by providing natural resources. Wetland bodies in study site locally known as Boli, Tala or Talav. The aquatic monocotyledons flora of 16 selected perennial lakes in Kurkheda Tehsil were studied for a period of 3 years. Altogether 56 plant spa. belonging to 39 genera and 14 families were recorded from the study site. Further macrophytes are divided into five growth forms. Out of which free floating hydrophytes (FFH) represent 04 species, suspended hydrophytes (SH) represent 02 species, attached submerged hydrophytes (ASH) represent 06 species, attached hydrophytes with floating leaves (AHF) represent 09 species and wetland hydrophytes (WH) which are most dominant growth form represent 35 species. Anwar Department of Botany, Islamia College Peshawar, Pakistan. *Corresponding author E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Ethnobotanical survey of angiosperms was undertaken in district Karak KP, Pakistan during March, 2010 through April, 2011.The aims and objectives of the study were to document the indigenous knowledge of plants particularly medicinal, fuel, timber, vegetables, ornamentals and fruit plants. A total of 88 genera and 103 species belonging to 43 families were collected from district Karak, KP, Pakistan. Out of 103 plant species, 76 species (74%) were herbs, 15 species (14%) were trees and 12 species (12%) were shrubs. Among these 103 plants, 70 (67.9%) plants are used as a fodder for cattle, 52 (50.4%) medicinal, 38(36.8%) fuel, 8 (7.7%) timber, 8 (7.7%) vegetables, 7 (6.8%) ornamental and 4 (3.8%) as edible fruits. Out of these, 6 (5.8%) used as a hedge plants and 10 (9.7%) used for miscellaneous purposes. Key words: Ethnobotany, Flora, Medicinal plants, Karak, Pakistan. INTRODUCTION is the scientific study of the traditional knowledge and customs of a people concerning plants and their medical, District Karak lies between 33˚-6´ to 33˚-7´ religious and other uses. This paper focused on species variation, number of species, water quality parameters and identification of aquatic weeds. It was assessed by collecting samples from two fish cultured ponds, two floodplains and two roadside canals during May to October, 2013. According to this study, total 22 species belonging to 12 orders, 16 families and 21 genus were found. Again, 46%, 28%, 26% of total aquatic weeds were identified from the floodplains, roadside canals and culture ponds, respectively. During this study period, nine species of family Pontederiaceae, Convolvulaceae, Menyanthaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Araceae, Amaranthaceae, Polygonaceae were common in culture ponds, floodplains and roadside canals. Number of aquatic weeds was lowest in culture ponds due to the effective management. Noticeable species– Lemna minor, Marsilea quadrifolia, Ludwigia palustris, Aeschynomene aspera, Najas graminea, Hydrilla verticillata, Najas guadalupensis, Utricularia inflata were only found in floodplains. On the other hand, two species were common in fish cultured ponds and floodplain- Pistia stratiotes and Equisetum hyemale. -

Check List of Medicinal Flora of Tehsil Isakhel, District Mianwali-Pakistan Mushtaq Ahmad, Mir Ajab Khan, Shabana Manzoor, Muhammad Zafar And Shazia Sultana Department of Biological Sciences, Quaid-I-Azam University Islamabad-Pakistan Issued 15 February 2006 ABSTRACT The research work was conducted in the selected areas of Isakhel, Mianwali. The study was focused for documentation of traditional knowledge of local people about use of native medicinal plants as ethnomedicines. The method followed for documentation of indigenous knowledge was based on questionnaire. The interviews were held in local community, to investigate local people and knowledgeable persons, who are the main user of medicinal plants. The ethnomedicinal data on 55 plant species belonging to 52 genera of 30 families were recorded during field trips from six remote villages of the area. The check list and ethnomedicinal inventory was developed alphabetically by botanical name, followed by local name, family, part used and ethnomedicinal uses. Plant specimens were collected, identified, preserved, mounted and voucher was deposited in the Department of Botany, University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi, for future references. INTRODUCTION District Mianwali derives its name from a local Saint, Mian Ali who had a small hamlet in the 16th century which came to be called Mianwali after his name (on the eastern bank of Indus). The area was a part of Bannu district. The district lies between the 32-10º to 33-15º, north latitudes and 71-08º to 71-57º east longitudes. The district is bounded on the north by district of NWFP and Attock district of Punjab, on the east by Kohat districts, on the south by Bhakkar district of Punjab and on the west by Lakki, Karak and Dera Ismail Khan District of NWFP again. -

Introduction: The city is quite new in a sense that it was built in 1823 after the flood, but this fact alone has preserved the old touch of city which has been lost in other cities. The old wall is still visible around the old city. The bazaars of the city all converge at one point which is called "chowgalla", which literally means a place from where four ways are leaving out. Major bazaars include Topanwala bazaar, Bhatiya bazar, Muslim bazar, Kalan bazar and Bakhiri bazar. Like all other cities and towns of saraiki speaking belt, Dera Ismail Khan is also famous for a desert delicacy called sohan halwa. The shops of this delicacy are mostly situated in Topawaala bazar. Dates are grown here in abundance and are one of the major exports. Dera Ismail Khan takes its name from Ismail Khan, a Bloch chief who settled here towards the end of the 15th century in 1469 A.D. -

How: Identify the outer boundary of the pond. This is the ‘line’ marking the pond’s highest yearly water levels (usually in early spring). It will probably not be the current water level of the pond, but should be evident from the extent of wetland vegetation (for example a ring of rushes growing at the pond’s outer edge), or other clues such as water-line marks on tree trunks or stones. Within the outer boundary, search all the dry and shallow areas of the pond that are accessible. Survey deeper areas with a net or grapnel hook. Record wetland plants found by crossing through the names on this sheet. You don’t need to record terrestrial species. For each species record its approximate abundance as a percentage of the pond’s surface area. Where few plants are present, record as ‘<1%’. If you are not completely confident in your species identification put’?’ by the species name. If you are really unsure put ‘??’. Biodiversity of Sedges in Dera Ismail Khan District, Nwfp Pakistan

Vol.24, No.2, 2008 BIODIVERSITY OF SEDGES IN DERA ISMAIL KHAN DISTRICT, NWFP PAKISTAN Sarfaraz Khan Marwat* and Mir Ajab Khan** ABSTRAC The present account of Cyperaceae is based on the results of the Taxonomical research work conducted in Dera Ismail Khan (D.I.Khan) district, North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan, during May 2005 - April 2006. 20 plant species of the family, belonging to 9 genera, were collected, preserved and identified. Plant specimens were mounted and deposited as voucher specimens in the Department of Botany, Quaid-I-University, Islamabad. Complete macro & microscopic detailed morphological features of these species were investigated. Key to the species of the area was developed for easy and correct identification & differentiation. The genera with number of species are: Bolboschoenus ( 1sp.), Cyperus ( 6 sp.), Eleocharis ( 2 sp.), Eriophorum (I sp.), Fimbristylis ( 5 sp.), Juncellus (1sp.), Pycreus ( I sp.), Schoenoplectus ( 2 sp.) and Scirpus (1sp). Key words: Taxonomy, Sedges and Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. INTRODUCTION Dera Ismail Khan (D.I.Khan) is the southern most in this family are the underground parts, shape of the district of N.W.F.P. lying between 31°.15’ and aerial stem, presence and arrangement of the leaves, 32°.32’North latitude and 70°.11’ and 71°.20’ East type of inflorescence, number and length of longitude with an elevation of 571ft. from the sea involucral bracts, shape and size of the spikelets, level. It has a total geographical land of 0.896 million arrangement of glumes, persistence of the rachilla, hectares and out of which 0.300 m.ha.
