A report on the Conference of the History of Society

The newly formed History of Economics Society held its first con- ference in Chicago, May 30-31, 1973. The theme was “The History of Economic Thought: The State of the Art.” About seventy persons at- tended. The conference examined the present condition of the field and its place in the study of economics, and heard reports on recent studies. There were papers on methodology, papers on particular and the development of certain ideas, and a discussion-cum-argument-cum- contention over the teaching of the history of thought. The arrangements for the program were made by Warren J. Samuels of Michigan State University, and the other arrangements were made by William Grampp and Norman S. Smith of the University of Illinois in Chicago. The next conference will be held at Chapel Hill, May 29-31, 1974. The program of the Chicago conference was as follows.
