Ponderings of the President: I have been thinking about this winter and have to say that by in large I have loved it. I know, I'm one of the 'weird' ones. I get out and walk my dog usually twice each day, no matter the temperature. Please do not call PETA on me, my faithful, energetic Izzy whines if we don't get out there! There are many things I've loved about this winter; the sun has been out more than it has not, fresh snow always looks clean and fluffy, and I get guilt-free time in my studio to quilt! On snow days no one expects you to go anywhere or do anything...see, it's just all how you look at it! That being said, I am ready for the ice to go away and I'm not looking forward to the mud that will surely come as all of this thaws. Before I close, I wanted to be sure that all of you knew that the two new, no cost, programs that have been developed; Quilt Mentors and the QS Sew-in/Mini-Retreats are open to all quilters, members or not! It is our way of inviting those who have an interest in quilting to get know us QS members and maybe in the future join us for our monthly meetings. So if you know other quilters who are not QS members, invite them to these events - we'd love to meet them!

Happy Quilting! Carol Best

Quilter's Sew-ciety Evening Meeting Minutes:

The March 3, 2014, evening meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by Mary Anderson at Bethany United Methodist Church. The minutes of the February evening meeting were accepted as printed in the newsletter with no corrections or additions (motion accepted: Judy Plank, seconded Norma Sherwood).  Show and Tell: Wallhangings: Quilts - 1 King size, 1 Queen, 2 Double, 2 Twin; 1 set Baby items; 1 Pillow; 2 Table runners; 8 small quilts; 1 Jacket, 3 Bags. Program: By Enid Weichselbaum, member of our Quilters' Sew-ciety since 2002. Enid shared with us three of her award-winning techniques for embellishing quilts: (1) Using scrapbooking letter stickers for text on quilts. (2) Using (Elmer's blue gel, washable) glue as resist in creating designs on fabric. (3) Making and using silk screens with organza and iron-on vinyl. Each method was explained in step-by-step demonstration and accompanied with examples so attendees had close-up of the details. She also shared her technique for embellishing quilts with organza flowers; she "cuts" the petals from the organza, using a woodburning tool, which seals edges as design is out. Information about resources for materials to create these was also provided by Enid.  Introductions: New members - Jean Griebel, Becky Siems and Cobi Wangen.  Door Prize, a Quilting Chick bag, to Pat Ferguson.  Adjournment: Motion by Darlene Peterson, second by Linda Edd.

Respectfully submitted by Romayne Thompson, pro tem Evening Secretary.

Quilters’ Sew-ciety News March 2014 6

Last month we got to know Cindy Horan. I did not give her a proper introduction in the newsletter or even a Thank You at the end! My apologies to Cindy. This month we get to know Ruby Florine. Thank you Ruby for sharing and letting us get to know you, a fellow quilter, better!

Name: Ruby Florine How long have you been a member of QS and what brought you to the group? Two years already! For a long time I had commitments at church on the first Monday night of the month. Once I was finished with those, I thought I would treat myself and join the group. How long have you been quilting and how did you get started? My maternal grandmother was a quilter, and it always intrigued me. When we were first married I took a Georgia Bonesteel-inspired class on Lap-Quilting through community education. I finished the project on a Singer machine I received as a high-school graduation gift and put it away. I sewed clothes for my two daughters while they were little and then about 20 years ago my husband bought me an 6005 Heirloom machine and I started quilting again. Machine or hand quilt? Both, but the arthritis in my hands usually dictates machine piecing and quilting. What part of the process do you enjoy the most? I love to piece, but recently hand-quilted a wool-applique wall hanging and found the hand-quilting to be very enjoyable, although rather slow . . . .but it's all about the journey, right?!?!? What is your favorite line of fabrics and a dream related to quilting? I LOVE the Moda line, Kansas Troubles-the autumn palette is a joy to work with and just feels "right". I've always wanted to do an Triple Irish Chain quilt (at least queen-sized) and hand quilt it. Where do you usually sew? My sewing room is located in our unfinished basement (cold, occasional spider, concrete floor), but now that one of my daughters has left home and is getting married, I hope to move into the bedroom she used on the main floor of our 1929 story-and-a-half house. While on a trip to Chicago a few years ago with my sister and our daughters, my husband surprised me by installing track lighting in my sewing room downstairs. I regret I won't be able to have that directional lighting on our main floor. Do you watch TV or listen to audio books/music? I love to listen to music . . . . ABBA, Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart, the Wicked soundtrack, almost anything! What is a favorite quilt memory? Playing under a quilt still on my grandmother's quilting frame. Her quilting frame was four 1x4 boards with flannel stapled the length of the boards, held together with Grandpa's C-clamps from his tool shed, and propped up on the wooden dining room chairs. She pieced all her quilts on a Singer vibrating shuttle treadle . (She HAD an electric machine, but only used that to mend Grandpa's overalls.) They lived in an old farmhouse that did not have indoor plumbing when it was built-in the 50's. They converted a small bedroom into the bathroom-that's where Grandma kept her treadle. My sister and I would go in that room, shut the door (after all, it WAS a bathroom!) and play with her treadle. I'm sure we caused a lot of tangles running that machine without fabric, but Grandma never scolded. She died, and my cousin purchased her treadle at the auction. I've always wanted to try sewing on a treadle, so when one came up for sale in Frontenac on Craig's list, I took a look at it. Although it was not a vibrating shuttle like Luella's, it certainly looked like the one my grandmother had. I bought it, cleaned it up, read a LOT about treadles (most helpful: www.treadleon.net and www.treadlelady.com) and started to . I was AMAZED-it stitches nicer than my computerized machine, straight, even stitches, good tension, heaven! But that's also one of its faults-it only stitches forward-no reverse, no zig-zag, no stitch. Straight. I DID piece a lap top quilt on the treadle, but had it machine quilted. I have Quilters’ Sew-ciety News March 2014 7

searched the internet for a cover that fits over the feed dogs and want to try machine quilting on it, but it's not going so well so will need to play with it a bit to see if I can get that to work. But it's very relaxing to treadle, I'm enjoying it very much. And my treadle is my "go to" machine when I need to stitch leather handles for a bag - it's a tough machine. I'd be reluctant to stitch that on my electric machine! The worst that will happen with my treadle is a broken needle. What is your most quilt related embarrassing moment? I'm mentoring a friend who wants to learn to quilt . . . we went to the quilt store to buy fabric for a project she wanted to do and we ended up buying TWICE as much fabric as she needed!!! I offered to buy the excess fabric from her as I loved it as much as she did, but she turned me down. She's still my friend; she's still quilting, and has a nice stash of some beautiful fabrics! Tell us about your family/pets/jobs if you wish... I've been married to my best friend for 30 years and we have two beautiful daughters. Both are gainfully employed and the oldest one shows good promise of being an accomplished piecer! The youngest one is fun to have in your sewing room, as she's friendly, loves to watch and talk; but isn't really interested in quilting. She does press at retreats when my sister and our daughters get together to quilt. I work at Mayo Clinic in the Human Resources area and love setting up interviews for employment. I'm our church's treasurer and sing in the choir. We're busy planning my oldest daughter's wedding this October. I asked if she'd like a quilt for a wedding gift, and she said, "no, (seeing my fallen face, she added) well, maybe a lap quilt would be nice!"

Always looking for members to share in the Getting to Know You column of our newsletters...Please consider and fill out the new "Pink" form that can be found at our meetings by the membership table (as well as the Pink bag to return them in). You can also type it in an email and send it to me at [email protected]. Thank you and Happy Quilting...Karen Greenslade
