• Economic Ascendance Is/As Moral Rightness: the New Religious Political Right in Post-Apartheid South Africa Part
Economic Ascendance is/as Moral Rightness: The New Religious Political Right in Post-apartheid South Africa Part One: The Political Introduction If one were to go by the paucity of academic scholarship on the broad New Right in the post-apartheid South African context, one would not be remiss for thinking that the country is immune from this global phenomenon. I say broad because there is some academic scholarship that deals only with the existence of right wing organisations at the end of the apartheid era (du Toit 1991, Grobbelaar et al. 1989, Schönteich 2004, Schönteich and Boshoff 2003, van Rooyen 1994, Visser 2007, Welsh 1988, 1989,1995, Zille 1988). In this older context, this work focuses on a number of white Right organisations, including their ideas of nationalism, the role of Christianity in their ideologies, as well as their opposition to reform in South Africa, especially the significance of the idea of partition in these organisations. Helen Zille’s list, for example, includes the Herstigte Nasionale Party, Conservative Party, Afrikaner People’s Guard, South African Bureau of Racial Affairs (SABRA), Society of Orange Workers, Forum for the Future, Stallard Foundation, Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), and the White Liberation Movement (BBB). There is also literature that deals with New Right ideology and its impact on South African education in the transition era by drawing on the broader literature on how the New Right was using education as a primary battleground globally (Fataar 1997, Kallaway 1989). Moreover, another narrow and newer literature exists that continues the focus on primarily extreme right organisations in South Africa that have found resonance in the global context of the rise of the so-called Alternative Right that rejects mainstream conservatism.

SUB-NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS AND FOREIGN POLICY: THE CASE OF THE LIMPOPO PROVINCE IN SOUTH AFRICA by Vhulenda Edna Matshili Submitted in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Masters of Arts in the subject Politics at the University of South Africa Supervisor: Professor Jo-Ansie van Wyk 2013 DECLARATION I declare that “Sub-national governments and foreign policy: The case of the Limpopo province in South Africa ” is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. ________________________ _____________________ Signature Date (Miss Vhulenda Edna Matshili) i ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to analyse and describe the role of sub-national governments (SNG’s) in foreign policy and how the conduct of diplomacy has developed in the South African context, and to assess why and how provinces engage in this phenomenon. The theoretical approach to this study is embedded in neo- functionalism. In order to illustrate this, the South African province, the Limpopo Province is used as an illustrative case study. In particular, the study will analyse the role of the International Relations Unit (IRU) within the Office of the Premier (OtP) in the Limpopo Province as a case study. Limpopo is the main focus of this study because it, inter alia, borders on three sovereign states (Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe) which place the province in a good position to engage in international relations, mutual intentions and friendly relations with its neighbouring and other distant countries. The results of this study is that provinces have become important foreign policy and international relations actors in the area of low politics; however the national government remains as the main actor in the international relations and foreign policy making process.

[2] It is common cause that Messrs Stopforth and Veenendaal (citizens of the Republic of South Africa) were, during the incidents described herein, members of what is generally referred to as right-wing Afrikaner organisations, inter alia the AWB (Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging) and the Orde Boerevolk. During or about 1989 they, as well as one Klentz, were approached in the RSA by one Brown to participate in underground terrorist activities in the territory then known as South West Africa (“SWA”). The three of them, as well as others, gathered in SWA, where they were issued with weapons of war: rifle grenades, anti-personnel and anti-tank missiles, phosphorous grenades, explosive devices and rifles.

Editor’s Summary The transition to a new constitutional dispensation necessitated that mechanisms be put in place to overcome reluctance to change and to deal with conduct regarded as inappropriate in the new society. The Constitution recognised this need. Legislation was enacted to provide the framework necessary to alleviate and overcome the friction resulting from change. It seeks to provide the standards society is to adhere to and to assist society to determine what standards of conduct are acceptable. The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 4 of 2000 (“the Equality Act”) forms part of this legislation. An ubuntubased jurisprudence has been developed. Ubuntu is a concept which is contrasted with vengeance. It dictates that a high value be placed on the life of a human being. It places a high premium on dignity, compassion, humaneness and respect for the humanity of others. It enjoins good attitudes and shared concern, and a shift from confrontation to mediation and conciliation. It favours the reestablishment of harmony in the relationship between parties, and for such harmony to restore the dignity of a plaintiff without ruining the defendant.

  • The Struggle for Self-Determination: a Comparative Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism Among the Quebecois and the Afrikaners
The Struggle for Self-Determination: A Comparative Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism Among the Quebecois and the Afrikaners By: Allison Down This thesis is presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Stellenbosch. Supervisor: Professor Simon B. Bekker Date Submitted: December, 1999 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration I, the undersigned hereby declare that the work contained in this thesis is my own original work and has not previously in its entirety or in part been submitted at any university for a degree. Signature Date Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This thesis examines the structural factors that precipitate the emergence of ethnicity and nationalism, with a special emphasis on ethno-Iinguistic identity. Nationalist momentum leading to self-determination is also addressed. A historical comparative study of the Quebecois of Canada and the Afrikaners of South Africa is presented. The ancestors of both the Quebecois and the Afrikaners left Europe (France and the Netherlands, respectively) to establish a new colony. Having disassociated themselves from their European homeland, they each developed a new, more relevant identity for themselves, one which was also vis-a-vis the indigenous population. Both cultures were marked by a rural agrarian existence, a high degree of religiosity, and a high level of Church involvement in the state. Then both were conquered by the British and expected to conform to the English-speaking order. This double-layer of colonialism proved to be a significant contributing factor to the ethnic identity and consciousness of the Quebecois and the Afrikaners, as they perceived a threat to their language and their cultural institutions.

It was a long time in the making, and may not have been completed at all had it not been for the support of a great number of people, all of whom have my deep appreciation. In particular, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Michael Bollig, Prof. Dr. Richard Janney, Dr. Melanie Moll, Professor Keyan Tomaselli, Professor Ruth Teer-Tomaselli, and Prof. Dr. Teun A. van Dijk for their help, encouragement, and constructive criticism. My special thanks to Dr Petr Skalník for his unflinching support and encouraging supervision, and to Mark Loftus for his proof-reading and help with all language issues. I am equally grateful to all who welcomed me to South Africa and dedicated their time, knowledge and effort to helping me. The warmth and support I received was incredible. Special thanks to the Burch family for their help settling in, and my dear friend in George for showing me the nature of determination. Finally, without the unstinting support of my two colleagues, Angelika Kitzmantel and Silke Olig, and the moral and financial backing of my family, I would surely have despaired. Thank you all for being there for me. We were cut off from the comprehension of our surroundings; we glided past like phantoms, wondering and secretly appalled, as sane men would be before an enthusiastic outbreak in a madhouse.
