Specifically, by adding a gender analysis, this study will demonstrate that black soldiers fought in the war for two principle reasons: first, it was a means of exercising their citizenship; and secondly, it was a means of demonstrating that they were real men. Reflecting on an era when proving one's manhood was a national obsession--this thesis provides a critical window through which we can reconstruct their motivations for fightingin America's firstoverseas war. The black soldier in the Spanish-American War fought not only for Cuban independence but to suppress a colonial rebellion in the Philippines. In so doing, black soldiers fought to preserve and defend their two most prized possessions: their citizenship and their manhood. African Americans at the end of the nineteenth century were legally reduced to the status of second-class citizens. Black soldiers saw this war as an opportunity to prove to white Americans that the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision and its articulation of the "separate but equal" doctrine was a grave mistake. "Confronted with lynching, disenfranchisement, and other evidence of racial prejudice, blacks viewed the Spanish-American War within the context of their deteriorating status at home." 1 The purpose of this study is to provide a re-examination of the black soldier in the Spanish-American-Cuban-Filipino War. Specifically, by adding a gender analysis, this study will demonstrate that black soldiers fought in the war for two principle reasons: first, it was a means of exercising their citizenship; and secondly, as a means of demonstrating that they were real men. In an era when proving one's manhood was a national obsession-this thesis provides a critical window through which we can reconstruct their motivations for fighting in America's first overseas war. Vol. 38: 545. 1 and manhood was intertwined with the fight against the Spanish and the Filipino. This study differs from the mainstream interpretations of the motivations for the tum-of-the-centuryblack soldier. Typically, most scholarship regarding this group of veterans emphasized their need to prove that they deserved to be citizens and their quest to gain economic opportunities denied them as civilians. This thesis starts with the proposition that these soldiers knew that they were citizens and that the war was perhaps the only arena in which they could exercise their entitlement. More importantly, this thesis differs from other scholarly analysis because of the critical analysis of masculinity. Only within the last decade have historians began to add gender to the discussion of the black soldier. This paper will argue that it was proving their manhood and demonstrating their citizenship served as the primary motivations behind these soldiers' desire to fight. "This war is a blessing in disguise for the Negro. He will get honor. He will have an opportunity of proving to the world his real bravery, worth, and manhood. "2 The first chapter will discuss and analyze the historiography of the black soldier of the Spanish-American-Cuban-Filipino War. The second chapter will discuss first the treatment the soldiers expected upon their return from fighting in Cuba. Then it will discuss the treatment they received after the war and their feelings about that treatment as expressed in their letters to the press. In addition, chapter two will discuss how the black press responded to the negative backlash from white America. The third chapter will discuss the soldiers' feelings about going fight in the Philippines and the reasons that many decided to stay in 2 Indianapolis Freeman, April 23, 1898. 2 Southeast Asia rather than return to the U.S. This will lead to my conclusion. First, I conclude that black soldiers at theend of the war were in worse shape that they had been at the start of the war as citizens and soldiers. Second, despite the decline in their overall status as American citizens, their place as leaders and heroes to the black community had been solidified. Consequently, they would later organize the rise of Black Nationalism in the U.S. and helped influence the futureleaders of the early twentieth century Civil Rights movement. 3 Chapter 1 "Softmen cannot carryon a hard fight" The historiography of the black soldier during the Spanish-American War has gone through three evolutionary phases. During the first phase, 1899-1920, authors sought to present blacks as the most loyal and brave soldier in America. The second phase which starts in 1967, began with a re-introduction' of the Buffalo soldier into the memory of American history. The third phase which begins in 1995 is theera when gender was added to the analysisof late nineteenth century America. Phase I authors sought to remind white America that whenever the United States was at war, the black community was always ready, willing, and able to answer the call for real men and true patriots. "The fidelity of the colored people has been fully tested. They have been true under all circumstances and at all times." 1 The Black Hero: Phase I (1899-1920) In 1893, Joseph LeConte wrote a very poignant study entitled," The Race Problem in the South." A well-known and respected scientist of the late nineteenthcentury, Leconte states in his race study that," theNegro race was still in its childhood, not yet capable

    Building Networks: Cooperation and Communication Among African Americans in the Urban Midwest, 1860-1910 Jack S. Blocker Jr.* In the dramatic narrative of African-American history, the story of the post-Emancipation years begins in the rural South, where the rights won through postwar constitutional amendments gradually yield to the overwhelming forces of segregation and disfranchisement. During the First World War, the scene shifts to the metropolitan North, where many members of the rapidly growing southern-born migrant population develop a new, militant consciousness. Behind this primary narrative, however, lies another story. An earlier, smaller migration flow from South to North had already established the institutional and cultural foundations for the emergence of a national racial consciousness in postbellum America. Much of this crucial work took place in small and mid-size towns and cities. Some interpreters have seen the creation of a national racial consciousness as a natural and normal product of African heritage. This view, however, neglects the diverse origins and experiences of African Americans during the slavery years. “Alternatively,”writes historian Harold Forsythe, “we should consider that a distinctive national community developed from local roots during emancipation. Local associations of freedpeople, organized in families, neighborhood groupings, churches, [and] benevolent and fraternal orders, slowly developed into regional, statewide, and ultimately national consociations. This process of unification involved not only consciousness, but [also] institutional and power connections. It matured between 1909 and about 1925.”’The process of community-building can be seen clearly in the three states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, which I call the Lower Midwest. On the eve of the Civil War, about 56,000 African Americans lived in the Lower Midwest.

Pinnick [email protected] http://blackcoalminerheritage.net/ INTRODUCTION African American researchers will find black newspapers an extremely valuable part of their search strategy. Although mainstream newspapers should always be consulted, African American newspapers will provide nuggets of information that can be found nowhere else. Although the first African American newspaper was established in 1827, it is in the post Civil War period that the black press experienced tremendous growth. Hundreds of newspapers appeared to quench the thirst for knowledge in the newly freed slaves, and to provide an accurate and positive image of the race. Clint C. Wilson took the incomplete manuscript of the foremost historian of the African American press, Armistead Pride and produced A History of the Black Press in 1997. It is a great source of information on black newspapers. Another worthwhile source can be found online at the public television website of PBS. They produced the documentary film, “The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords” in 1999, and their website is rich in reference material. http://www.pbs.org/blackpress/index.html VALUE OF BLACK NEWSPAPERS Aside from the most obvious benefit of locating obituaries, researchers can discover: an exact or nearly exact event date (birth, death, or marriage) of an ancestor, therefore enhancing the odds of a successful outcome when the eventual request for the vital record is made. Remember, some places will only search a short span of years in their index, and charge you whether they find the record or not. additional information on the event that will not be found on the vital record.

A closer examination, however, of another Roosevelt presidency – that of Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) – demonstrates the degree to which black voters were already growing disenchanted with the Republicans in the face of what they viewed as uneven support and contradictory messages from the highest ranking Republican in the land. Though the perception of Theodore Roosevelt‘s relationship to black Americans has been dominated by his historic invitation of Booker T. Washington to dine with him at the White House in 1901, in fact even this event had assorted and complex meanings for Roosevelt‘s relationship to the black community. More importantly, his dismissal of black troops following a controversial shooting in southern Texas in 1906 – an event known as the Brownsville affair – set off a firestorm of bitter protest from the black press, black intellectuals, and black voters.

This new subfield of the classical tradition involves the analysis of the creative response to classical antiquity by artists as well as the history of the professional training in classics of scholars, teachers and students in high schools, colleges and universities. To the first group belongs Helen Maria Chesnutt (1880-1969). Born in Fayetteville, NC, Chesnutt was the second daughter of acclaimed African American novelist, Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932). She earned her B.A. from Smith College in 1902 and her M.A. in Latin from Columbia University in 1925. She was a member of the American Philological Association and the Classical Association of the Middle West and South. Her life was spent teaching Latin at Central High School in Cleveland, OH.

Doctor of Philosophy (History), August 2017, 294 pp., 8 tables, bibliography, 120 titles. During the Philippine War, 1899 – 1902, America attempted to quell an uprising from the Filipino people. Four regular army regiments of black soldiers, the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry, and the Twenty-Fourth and Twenty-Fifth Infantry served in this conflict. Alongside the regular army regiments, two volunteer regiments of black soldiers, the Forty-Eighth and Forty-Ninth, also served. During and after the war these regiments received little attention from the press, public, or even historians. These black regiments served in a variety of duties in the Philippines, primarily these regiments served on the islands of Luzon and Samar. The main role of these regiments focused on garrisoning sections of the Philippines and helping to end the insurrection. To carry out this mission, the regiments undertook a variety of duties including scouting, fighting insurgents and ladrones (bandits), creating local civil governments, and improving infrastructure.

Using two of the library’s electronic databases—African American Newspapers and/or Accessible Archives—you will make use of digital archives to provide historical context for the day’s reading. Here’s what to do for prep work, step by step: • On the date you’re signed up to be the archival expert, look at when the writer published their works. (So, for example: Frances Ellen Watkins Harper published Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects in 1855.) • Determine a location that is relevant to the writer, if possible. For Harper, this could be Baltimore (where she grew up), Philadelphia (where she lived and worked as an adult), or Boston (where she frequently lectured). • Now choose a newspaper that is relevant to the date and the location of the poet. If you want to get even more specific, you can (for example, you could look at an abolitionist newspaper for Harper). If you can find one, you can also choose a newspaper where the writer published. • Select an issue of the newspaper and read the whole thing: news, editorials, poetry, even the advertisements. Lowe: After God is Music: Affliction, Healing, and Warfare in Haitian Pentecostalism (Under the direction of Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation explores a version of Pentecostal-charismatic Christianity in Haiti popularly known as Lame Selès (Fr. L’Armée Celeste), or “The Heavenly Army.” Within Haiti’s Protestant population more broadly, these independent Pentecostal communities are often viewed with suspicion and accused of being charlatans or practitioners of Vodou in a Christian guise on account of their combinatory ritual practices and musical styles. Based on data drawn from fieldwork among some of these communities in Port-de-Paix, Haiti, I argue that these independent Pentecostal communities are an important site of the kind of religious combination that has long characterized religion in Haiti and the Black Atlantic world. Drawing on resources within the “hot” and combative Petwo style of Vodou and combining it with “spiritual warfare” discourse drawn from global Pentecostal and charismatic Christian culture, these communities use music and divine healing to engage and attack spiritual sources of affliction common among the poor majority in contemporary Haiti, ranging from bodily and mental illness to anxiety and officially sanctioned injustice.

Carey, Associate Professor of History Abstract This dissertation examines the introduction of evangelical religion into the Chattahoochee Valley of Georgia during the frontier era, the formation and characteristics of biracial churches during the antebellum period, and the post-bellum racial separation and organization of independent black churches. It will document the attitudes, ideas, and actions of evangelicals as they formed, organized, and maintained biracial churches in the Chattahoochee Valley. In these churches, black and white evangelicals practiced “evangelical slavery,” defined as the manifestation of chattel slavery in the context of evangelical Christianity as practiced by slaveholders and slaves. This study also discloses the complexities of interactions of blacks and whites and their experiences as they grappled with the uncertainties and conflict brought about by emancipation. This dissertation is the first narrative of the religious history of the Chattahoochee Valley from the beginnings of white settlement to the end of Reconstruction. It is a subset of larger works on southern religion, but uniquely examines the continuity of southern evangelical religion between the time of the invasion of the Chattahoochee Valley by Methodist missionaries in 1821 and the practically complete institutional religious separation by 1877, thus augmenting and challenging previous interpretations of processes and chronology by revealing local patterns of behavior by black and white southern evangelicals.
