'' 190 CALVIN MORGAN M <: CLUNG CAL VIN MORGAN M'?CLUNG, son of Franklin Henry and Eliza Ann (Mills) McClung, was born May 12, 1855. In 1874 he received from East Tennessee University the degree of A. B., in 1876 from Sheffield Sci­ entific School of Yale University that of Ph. B. and in 1877 from East Tennessee University that of A. M. He married first Annie, daugh­ ter of Col. Charles McClung McGhee, founder of Lawson McGhee Library; second Barbara, daughter of Mr. Augustus Dixon Adair, of Atlanta. He died March 12, 1919. ~ 'i; The collection of historical material relating to his own state and city was the absorbing in­ terest of his later life. Accuracy and thorough­ ness characterized his efforts, both as student and collector. Evidence of his painstaking ex­ actness may be seen in the marginal annota­ tions, the clippings and letters to be found in almost every volume of his library. i? i?     Descendants of Adam White Generation No. 1 1. ADAM1 WHITE was born Abt. 1627 in Scotland, and died December 19, 1708 in Bushmills, County Antrim, Ireland. Notes for ADAM WHITE: Scottish and Irish sources reveal the following data concerning the life and ministry of the Reverend Adam White, putative ancestor of Moses and Hugh White of Delaware and Pennsylvania. Adam White was born in Scotland circa 1620-1625. He was educated at Glasgow University and received a Master of Arts degree in 1648. He was ordained - Clondevaddock (Fannet), 1654. He received 100 pounds a year from the Proctorate, 1655. Deposed for non-conformity, 1661, but continued to minister. Excommunicated and imprisoned in Lifford, 1664-1670 for disobeying a summons issued by Leslie, Bishop of Raphoe. Resigned September 18, 1672. Installed Ardstraw. Fled to Scotland, 1688. Resigned 1692. Installed Billy, near Dunluce, 1692. Died December 19, 1708. The exodus from Scotland to Ulster continued for some years. In July, 1635, a James Blair of Ayrshire, wrote: "Above ten thousand persons, have , within two years past, left this country - between Aberdeen and Inverness, and gone over to Ireland. They have come by the hundred, through this town, and three hundred shipped together on one tide." The founders of the Presbyterian Church in Ulster, were Clergymen, who took refuge, driven from Scotland and England, by the persecuting spirit, abroad then, against Puritans. But in 1637, the Calvinists Confession of Faith was altered. Bishops tinged with Puritanism, were deposed. High churchmen were placed in their stead. Conformity to the Established Church was enforced with pains and penalties.

DRAFT CENTRAL CITY SECTOR PLAN I. Background Section A. Overview of Comprehensive Planning Process The Central City Sector is approximately 16 square miles (10,201 acres) in size, and is characterized by its older neighborhoods, central business district and the University of Tennessee campus. Sector plans are a component of the Metropolitan Planning Commission's comprehensive plan. Sector plans are interrelated to several laws, processes and plans, which are described below. The Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC), under state law, is directed to create a comprehensive plan to provide recommendations for: roads and other transportation systems; parks and other public property; the general location and extent of public utilities, including sanitation and water; the general character and location of community areas and housing development; uses of land for trade, industry, housing, recreation, agriculture, and forestry appropriate zoning relating to the land use plan, outlining permitted uses and the intensity of those uses, such as height and locations of buildings on their parcels. The General Plan is the official 30-year comprehensive plan for Knoxville and Knox County that outlines a long-range vision and policy framework for physical and economic development.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The official papers of Governor John C. Brown, 1871-1875, deal with many subjects of significant interest to researchers studying Tennessee during the period of Reconstruction. One quickly notes the undisguised relief of citizens over this regaining control of the reins of state government through the election of Brown, a former Whig but now a staunch Democrat. Typical statements appear like these: (1) “I am a Democrat and voted for you and the whole of the Democratic ticket…Any party who is in favor of putting negroes on an equality with white people I have no use for; (2) “Mr. Hill served with honor and fidelity to the Confederate States through the late war.” Many applicants for appointive offices apparently believed that past encounters with Radical candidates automatically enhanced their chances for securing the desired position. Knoxville’s John H. Crozier, for instance, on November 24, 1871, applied for the position of Attorney General for the Criminal Court of Knox County. As a Conservative, he reminded Brown that earlier a convention had disqualified him (Crozier) as a candidate, favoring instead Colonel Thornburg, a Radical. “This prejudice”, he wrote, “of the union element against rebels and the sons of prominent [men] will exist just as long as union men are benefited by it, and they will never surrender it until their eyes are accustomed to seeing rebels in office, and are made to understand that, with peace, all prejudices on account of the war must be buried”.
