Abstract Description of the main karstic regions of Siberia and Far East, and the most important caves. Survey of the subterranean species collected in caves, springs, hyporheic and MSSh. Relationship with the climate and glacial paleoclimatic periods to explain the paucity of the terrestrial fauna of Siberia. Persistence of some aquatic stygobionts (Crustacea), and richness of the subterranean fauna of the Far East, particularily in the Sikhote-Alin. The Crutaceans of the eastern part of the Ussury basin and Sakhalin Island have relationship with the Japanese and Korean fauna. Key words: karst, caves, springs, MSS, subterranean fauna, biogeography. 1 Generalities and History The study of caves in Siberia was begun in the late 17th century (Tsykin et al., 1979), but the first published report were made as early as in the 18th century by swedish geographer P. von Strahlenberg who in 1722 visited the cave on the Yenisei river bank above Krasnoyarsk and gave a short description, which is considered the first report of caves in Siberia (Strahlenberg, 1730). -

SCHILLHAMMER Abstract The Philonthus rotundicollis and sanguinolentus species groups are subject of part 5 of the Revision of the East Palaearctic and Oriental species of Philonthus STEPHENS, 1829. Nine new species are described: P. turnai (China), P. schuhi (India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia), P. smetanai (Taiwan), P.flavohumeralis (Nepal, India), P. arunensis (Nepal), P. schuelkei (China), P. amplicollis (Nepal), P. ildefonso (China) and P. fasciventris (China). Philonthus picimanus (MÉNÉTRIÉS, 1832) and P. sinuatocollis MOTSCHULSKY, 1860 are removed from synonymy with P. rotundicollis (MÉNÉTRIÉS, 1832). Neotypes are designated for P. rotundicollis and P. sinuatocollis; lectotypes are designated for P. idiocerus KRAATZ, 1859, P. densus CAMERON, 1926, P. beesoni CAMERON, 1926 and P. virgatus SHARP, 1889. Philonthus rotundicollis ssp. nigropolitus BERNHAUER, 1916 and P. rotundicollis ssp. inopinatus SMETANA, 1963 are placed in synonymy with the nominate subspecies, P. formaneki ROUBAL, 1911 and P. formaneki var. incompletus ROUBAL, 1911 are placed in synonymy with P. picimanus. The species groups are briefly characterized and keys to species of both groups are provided. -

Corresponding author: Evgeny S. Koshkin, [email protected] Abstract The hawk moth Sphecodina caudata (Bremer & Grey, 1852) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) is reported in Amur Oblast for the first time. The new record, 3 km west of Kundur village, Khingan Nature Reserve, is in the extreme southeastern part of the region and 308–420 km north-west of previously known records in southern Khabarovsk Krai. This paper presents the results of a taxonomic study of the bees of the genus Seladonia from the Eastern Palaearctic Region. Two new species, S. leleji sp. n. and S. nikolskayae sp. n. from the Primorskii Territory of Russia, are described. A new synonymy is established: S. tumulorum fer- ripennis (Cockerell, 1929) = S. tumulorum higashi (Sakagami et Ebmer, 1979), syn. n. The taxonomic rank of S. gobiensis (Ebmer, 1982), originally described as a subspecies of S. pseudovestita (Blüthgen, 1925), is raised to specific status. The lectotypes ofHalictus semitectus Morawitz, 1874; H. mongolicus Morawitz, 1880; H. confluens Morawitz, 1890 [= S. aeraria (Smith, 1873)] and H. pjalmensis gasc- hunicus Blüthgen, 1935 are designated. Seven species, S. aeraria (Smith), S. argilos (Ebmer), S. go- biensis (Ebmer), S. indefinita (Blüthgen), S. petraea (Blüthgen), S. pjalmensis (Strand) and S. placidula (Blüthgen), are recorded from Mongolia for the first time. A total of 24 species of the genus Seladonia were found in the Eastern Palaearctic Region. A key to all species is given, except for the female of S. opacoviridis (Ebmer, 2005). -

Air and water pollution are extremely high and have had an extremely deleterious effect on health. * Spending on environmental protection is very low, and is insufficient to clean up the environment. Most major projects are funded by international institutions * Efforts to uncover information regarding pollution at nuclear and military facilities is hampered by the state’s concern to maintain security. * Environmental controls and monitoring capacity have been reduced since 2000. The state places more emphasis on economic growth than countering pollution. Consciousness of environmental issues amongst the population is relatively low. * NGOs play a major role in attempting to raise consciousness and to lobby for environmental conservation and controls. The leadership however is generally averse to such activities, particularly if they have international connections. 06/41 Russian Environmental Problems Dr Mark A Smith This paper will give a brief overview of the general environmental situation in the Russian Federation, and the post-Soviet leadership’s policies towards the environment and pollution.1 A General Overview of the Environmental Situation The Soviet Union bequeathed the Russian Federation an unenviable environmental and ecological legacy. The emphasis that the Soviet system had placed on heavy industry, largely for the purposes of national security, meant that environmental concerns took second place to the need for industrial development. Little concern was expressed during the Soviet period over environmental issues, although it would be wrong to say that there was complete silence. -

Borne Encephalitis Virus Strains and Their Pathogenic Properties

Leonova2 1 Limnological Institute, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, Irkutsk, Russia, 2 Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Vladivostok, Russia Abstract Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is transmitted to vertebrates by taiga or forest ticks through bites, inducing disease of variable severity. The reasons underlying these differences in the severity of the disease are unknown. In order to identify genetic factors affecting the pathogenicity of virus strains, we have sequenced and compared the complete genomes of 34 Far-Eastern subtype (FE) TBEV strains isolated from patients with different disease severity (Primorye, the Russian Far East). We analyzed the complete genomes of 11 human pathogenic strains isolated from the brains of dead patients with the encephalitic form of the disease (Efd), 4 strains from the blood of patients with the febrile form of TBE (Ffd), and 19 strains from patients with the subclinical form of TBE (Sfd). On the phylogenetic tree, pathogenic Efd strains formed two clusters containing the prototype strains, Senzhang and Sofjin, respectively. Sfd strains formed a third separate cluster, including the Oshima strain. The strains that caused the febrile form of the disease did not form a separate cluster. In the viral proteins, we found 198 positions with at least one amino acid residue substitution, of which only 17 amino acid residue substitutions were correlated with the variable pathogenicity of these strains in humans and they authentically differed between the groups. -
