RENAISSANCE PORTRAITS: The Tudors This exhibit inaugurates what we hope wiil be a series using portraits from the Gallery's fledgling collection of portrait prints. We begin with political and literary figures of the Tudor period. The English Renaissance, as opposed especially to the Middle Ages, is one of high interest in the individual person­ ality — and only in such a period does the art of portraiture flourish. For a portrait is not simply a likeness. An artist's painting of a model, for example, is typically a likeness, but he or she is presented simply as a human figure or as the repre­ sentative of a class, not as John Jones or Mary Smith. Beyond external appearances, furthermore, we say that some portraits have "captured the personality" of the sitter, have conveyed some of the emotional or other traits we know or imagine to be characteristic. And when we are not enjoying such real or imagined resemblance, then, as Aristotle said, we may still respond to "the finish of the workmanship, or the coloring, or some such other cause," Hence, beyond physical likeness and 2 characterization, there is the possibility of interesting pattern and structure in the image itself. However, if portraiture flourished in Renaissance England, as more brilliantly in other parts of Europe, we have to admit that it was largely in painting rather than in the engravings and etchings presented here. Among the European masters attracted to the court of Henry VIII, none was more important than Hans Holbein, whose finely detailed but rather flat, two-dimensional style dominated English painting well into the 17th century, even in the more sunny portraits of the master miniaturist of the next period, Nicholas Hilliard. It was to Holbein's easel paintings and to his superb portrait drawings, that engravers turned when they sought an accurate likeness for a frontispiece or for the series of royal and noble portraits that became so popular with Henry Holland's Baz?1iologia (1618) and Herwologia (1620), a popularity sustained well into the following century in Thomas Birch's The Heads of The Most Illustrious Persons of Great Britain ... (17^3-52), illustrated with engravings by George Vertue and Jacobus Hou- braken — all of whom are represented in the present exhibition. The portrait prints here of the Tudor courts — and of the writers who flourished under them -- group themselves naturally around the two key personalities of Henry VIII and of his daughter - 3 - by Ann Boleyn, Elizabeth I, What is, perhaps, surprising is the extent to which both focus the anguished concern of their subjects with royal marriage, heirs, and peaceful succession.

Sir Harris Nicolas, who wrote the Memoir prefixed to the Aldine Chaucer of 1845, realised that the solution of the problem was the construction of a pedigree; but the tree he drew up was quite inade­ quate for the purpose. The earliest record of the coats is in the notebook of Richard Lee, Port­ cullis, who sketched them for his Gatherings of Oxfordshire on his Visitation of the County in 1574. It is now in the Bodleian (Wood MS. D. 14), and a page of it, showing some of the shields on the Ewelme tombs, was reproduced in facsimile in the Harleian Society'S volume of the Visitations of Oxfordshire.

Catherine of Aragon Henry VIII’s first wife was Catherine of Aragon, daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Eight years before her marriage to Henry in 1509, Catherine was in fact married to Henry’s older brother, Arthur, who died of sickness at just 15 years old. Together, Henry and Catherine had a daughter, Mary – but it was a son that Henry wanted. Frustrated that Catherine seemed unable to produce a male heir to the throne, Henry had their marriage annulled (cancelled) in 1533. But there’s more to the story – towards the end of their marriage, Henry fell in love with one of Catherine’s ladies-in-waiting (woman who assisted the queen) – Anne Boleyn… 2. Anne Boleyn Anne Boleyn became Henry’s second wife after the pair married secretly in January 1533. By this time, Anne was pregnant with her first child to Henry, and by June 1533 she was crowned Queen of England. Together they had a daughter, Elizabeth – the future Queen Elizabeth I. But, still, it was a son – and future king of England – that Henry wanted. Frustrated, he believed his marriage was cursed and that Anne was to blame. And so, he turned his affections to one of Anne’s ladies-in-waiting, Jane Seymour.

    Mary Stuart and Elizabeth 1 Notes for a CE Source Question Introduction Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587) Mary was the daughter of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. She became Queen of Scotland when she was six days old after her father died at the Battle of Solway Moss. A marriage was arranged between Mary and Edward, only son of Henry VIII but was broken when the Scots decided they preferred an alliance with France. Mary spent a happy childhood in France and in 1558 married Francis, heir to the French throne. They became king and queen of France in 1559. Francis died in 1560 of an ear infection and Mary returned to Scotland a widow in 1561. During Mary's absence, Scotland had become a Protestant country. The Protestants did not want Mary, a Catholic and their official queen, to have any influence. In 1565 Mary married her cousin and heir to the English throne, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. The marriage was not a happy one. Darnley was jealous of Mary's close friendship with her secretary, David Rizzio and in March 1566 had him murdered in front of Mary who was six months pregnant with the future James VI and I. Darnley made many enemies among the Scottish nobles and in 1567 his house was blown up. Darnley's body was found outside in the garden, he had been strangled. Three months later Mary married the chief suspect in Darnley’s murder, the Earl of Bothwell. The people of Scotland were outraged and turned against her.

    ABSTRACT “She Should Have More if She Were Ruled and Guided by Them”: Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe, Female Agency in Late Medieval England Laura Christine Oliver, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Beth Allison Barr, Ph.D. This thesis argues that while patriarchy was certainly present in England during the late medieval period, women of the middle and upper classes were able to exercise agency to a certain degree through using both the patriarchal bargain and an economy of makeshifts. While the methods used by women differed due to the resources available to them, the agency afforded women by the patriarchal bargain and economy of makeshifts was not limited to the aristocracy. Using Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe as cases studies, this thesis examines how these women exercised at least a limited form of agency. Additionally, this thesis examines whether ordinary women have access to the same agency as elite women. Adding Dimension to an Elusive Character The figure of Anne Boleyn is one that looms large in history, controversial in her time and today. The second wife of King Henry VIII, she is most well-known for precipitating his break with the Catholic Church in order to marry her. Despite the tremendous efforts King Henry went to in order to marry Anne, a mere three years into their marriage, he sentenced her to death and immediately married another woman. Popular representations of her continue to exist, though most Anne Boleyns in modern depictions are figments of a cultural imagination.1 What is most telling about the way Anne is seen is not that there are so many opinions, but that throughout over 400 years of study, she remains an elusive character to pin down.
