Courses in this category focus on how ideas, values, beliefs, and other aspects of culture express and affect human experience. Courses involve the exploraon of ideas that foster aesthec and intellectual creaon in order to understand the human condion across cultures. This course provided an introducon to and a survey of the canonical works of the Western literary tradion from the epics of Homer to the mock-epic novel of Cervantes, taking into account texts from other literatures. We considered the social and historical contexts that gave rise to these works, and compared and contrasted them with our own modern culture. The learning objecves as specified on the syllabus were: a) acquaintance with the major works of the Western literary canon from anquity to the Renaissance, as well as the core vocabulary and concepts of literary analysis; b) close examinaon of works that originated in other mes and places, in order to compare systems of values and modes of expression that are both like and unlike those of modern cultures; c) development of crical thinking and communicaon skills through wrien essays and class discussion; d) ability to analyze literary sources, and syntheze and communicate ideas interpreng literature clearly and persuasively. For the final project, students were able to choose between a wrien essay and a visual project on themes related to the course. As for the wrien essay, they were given the opportunity to choose among different formats (research paper, outline of class lecture, text for presentaon, journal arcle, creave work, etc.). Visual projects included powerpoint presentaons, videos, painngs, posters, etc. The raonale was to smulate students to elaborate on one or more topics covered by the course in a personal and creave way. All projects had to be previously approved by the instructor, who provided instrucons, basic informaon, and suggesons on approaches and methodology to follow. Teamwork was strongly encouraged. In the evaluaon of each assessment, I considered mainly: a) the noons acquired and the ability to elaborate on them by proposing original ideas and interpretaons b) the ability to communicate thoughts and ideas effecvely and correctly. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

Rukiye PINAR BÖLÜKTAŞ1 ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe how nursing and nurses are portrayed in American and Turkish movies. Methods: First of all, we examined the films with the keywords nurse and nursing. The majority of the films were produced in the United States. Turkish film industry produced only six films between 1968 and 2020. Three movies from the United States (English Patient, Nurse Betty, Meet the Parents) and three movies from Turkey (Beautiful Coffee Server, Imperator, Brought by the Sea) with at least one nurse character with a significant part were covered. Thematic qualitative method was used to analyze the movies’ content. Results: All nurses, except one, were female, white, young, single, and childless. In “English Patient”, the nurse is portrayed mainly as a self-sacrificing character. In “Nurse Betty”, nursing is seen as a profession that can be done without education. “Meet the Parents” draws attention to common stereotypes about male nurses. In “Beautiful Coffee Server”, the nurse character is typically reduced to a supporting role, enforcing the message to the viewer that nurses were not really needed in healthcare. “Imperator” emphasizes the nurse’s sexual attractiveness and behavior rather than her professional work. And finally, in “Brought by the Sea”, portrayal of nurse creates a potent favorable image of nursing.

To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is the first to examine the U.S. movie industry’s total output. It is also the first to identify smoking movies, tobacco incidents and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices.† Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.
