First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -
METRO PICTURES Cotter, Holland
METRO PICTURES Cotter, Holland. “Cindy Sherman’s Divas, Poised for a Final Close-Up,” NYTimes.com (May 26, 2016). Cindy Sherman‘s “Untitled” (2016). In the transgender, avatar-populated present, personal identity feels increasingly like a pliable condition. It’s one that Cindy Sherman has been playing with in her photographs for decades. While still in art school in the early 1970s, she was transforming herself, for the camera, into an epic cast of individual characters — sullen teen queens, nerdy guys, Hollywood vamps — through a use of makeup and costuming so virtuosic and expressive as to rival the brushwork of a master painter. Now, some 40 years on, in a show of new work at Metro Pictures, the virtuosity is greater than ever, or at least subtler, and Ms. Sherman is still sole actor, director and costumer in a continuing drama. But the cast of characters has changed, simplified. Guys are long gone; the teen queens have grown; the vamps remain, all veteran divas poised for a final close-up. With their elegiac tone, the new pictures, Ms. Sherman’s first in five years, seem specifically designed to prompt reflection on the histories she has taken these divas through over time. She introduced them, in 1977, in a now- renowned series of black-and-white photographs called “Untitled Film Stills,” as starlets on the rise. They played ingénues — young housewives, career girls — threatened, in noirish, B-movie solo scenes, by unnamed dangers lurking just out of camera range. 519 W 24TH ST NEW YORK, NY 10011 T 212 206 7100 F 212 337 0070 WWW.METROPICTURES.COM [email protected] When Ms. -

Starved Rock
Starved Rock By Edgar Lee Masters STARVED ROCK As a soul from whom companionships subside The meaningless and onsweeping tide Of the river hastening, as it would disown Old ways and places, left this stone Of sand above the valley, to look down Miles of the valley, hamlet, village, town. It is a head-gear of a chief whose head, Down from the implacable brow, Waiting is held below The waters, feather decked With blossoms blue and red, With ferns and vines; Hiding beneath the waters, head erect, His savage eyes and treacherous designs. It is a musing memory and memorial Of geologic ages Before the floods began to fall; The cenotaph of sorrows, pilgrimages Of Marquette and LaSalle. The eagles and the Indians left it here In solitude, blown clean Of kindred things: as an oak whose leaves are sere Fly over the valley when the winds are keen, And nestle where the earth receives Another generation of exhausted leaves. Fatigued with age its sleepless eyes look over Fenced fields of corn and wheat, Barley and clover. The lowered pulses of the river beat Invisibly by shores that stray In progress and retreat Past Utica and Ottawa, And past the meadow where the Illini Shouted and danced under the autumn moon, When toddlers and papooses gave a cry, And dogs were barking for the boon Of the hunter home again to clamorous tents Smoking beneath the evening's copper sky. Later the remnant of the Illini Climbed up this Rock, to die Of hunger, thirst, or down its sheer ascents Rushed on the spears of Pottawatomies, And found the peace Where thirst and hunger are unknown. -

Though the printed word is essential in learning, educators have been taking notice of the new visual and oratory stimuli and incorporated them into classroom teaching. The purpose of this idea packet is to further introduce teacher colleagues to this methodology and share a compilation of films which may be easily implemented in secondary social studies instruction. Though this project focuses in grades 6-12 social studies we believe that media should be infused into all K-12 subject areas, from language arts, math, and foreign languages, to science, the arts, physical education, and more. In this day and age, students have become accustomed to acquiring knowledge through mediums such as television and movies. Though books and text are essential in learning, teachers should take notice of the new visual stimuli. Films are familiar in the everyday lives of students. -
