Edelweiss am Rio Grande German American Club Newsletter-April 2019 2 PRESIDENT’S LETTER What a great time we had at the St. Patrick’s Day Dance! The High Desert Jazz Band brought down the house, despite the third trombone player (yours truly). For those who missed it they’ll be back for the Roaring Twenties dance with addition of our beautiful vocalist Miss Kady Bow! I’m equally ex- cited over our new event celebration of Walpurgisnacht. This will be a coordinated event with our new Associate Club Duke City Creative (DCC). Chrystal Inferno is a blues/rock female ensemble with featured vocalists including our own DCC Director Chessa Peak! So dust off those dancing shoes and get yourself down to the club. Sincerely, Lance Klafeta NEWS AND NOTES Kaffeeklatsch Please join us at the GAC for the Kaffeeklatsch at 3pm on Sunday, April 7th. Please call Kathe Mirabal at 505-836-6182 for more information.

Vienna Ball Dance Practice There will be a dance practice at 7pm on Thursday, April 4th for all who plan to participate in the Vienna Ball dance group. Be sure to attend, as this is only two days before the Vienna Ball and will be the only practice session before the dance.

German-Language Movie Day! Our next German-Language Movie Day The Edukators (2004) Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (original title), Drama, Romance, rated R, 2h 7min, will be shown on Sunday, April 28th, following the GAC General Membership Meeting The movie is free and the popcorn is free! Come out and enjoy the fun! Storyline: Berlin student Jule is hopelessly indebted due to an accident she caused, uninsuredly hitting a rich businessman's limousine. Evicted from her flat she moves in with her boyfriend Peter and soon learns that Peter and his flat mate, Jan, are breaking into luxurious mansions at night. Instead of stealing or vandaliz- ing, though, they carefully and ornately rearrange furniture and valuables and leave obscure messages. Jule convinces Jan, who has a crush on her, to pay a visit to the villa of her creditor. Storyline written by Armin Ortmann {[email protected]}

What is ? From excerpts from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walpurgis Night, an abbreviation of Saint Walpurgis Night, also known as Saint Walpurga's Eve, is the eve of the Christian feast day of Saint Walpurga, an 8th-century abbess in , and is celebrated on the night of 30 April and the day of 1 May.

Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling "pest, rabies and whooping cough, as well as against witchcraft." In Germanic folklore, Hexennacht, literally "Witches' Night", was believed to be the night of a witches' meeting on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, a range of wooded hills in central Germany between the rivers Weser and Elbe. Christians prayed to God through the intercession of Saint Walpurga in order to protect themselves from witchcraft, as Saint Walpurga was successful in converting the local populace to Christianity.

The current festival is named after the English Christian missionary Saint Walpurga (c. 710–777/9). As Saint Walpurga's feast was held on 1 May (c. 870), she became associated with May Day. The of Saint Walpurga and the movement of her relics to Eichstätt occurred on 1 May in the year 870 thus leading to the Feast of Saint Walpurga and its eve, Walpurgis Night, being popularly observed on this date. The eve of May Day, traditionally celebrated with dancing and bonfires to ward off witches, came to be known as Sankt Walpurgisnacht ("Saint Walpurga's night") in the German language. The shortened name of the holiday is Walpurgisnacht in German. In English, it is known as Saint Walpurga's Night, Saint Walburga's Night, Walpurgis Night, Saint Walpurga's Eve, Saint Walburga's Eve, the Feast of Saint Walpurga or the Feast of Saint Walburga.

The 17th-century German tradition of a meeting of sorcerers and witches on May Day eve (German: Hexennacht "Witches' Night") is influenced by the descriptions of Witches' Sabbaths in 15th- and 16th-century literature. Given that witches gathered on this Hexennacht, the Western Christian Church established the Feast of Saint Walpurga on the same night in order to counteract witchcraft, given that the intercession of Saint Walpurga was efficacious against evil magic. Across Christendom, people continue to light bonfires on Saint Walpurga's Eve, now dedicated to this Christian saint, in order to ward off evil spirits and witches.

In Germany, Hexennacht ("Witches' Night"), the night from 30 April to 1 May, is the night when witches are reputed to hold a large celebration on the Brocken and await the arrival of spring and is held on the same night as Saint Walpurgis Night (Sankt Walpurgisnacht).

A scene in Goethe's Faust Part One is called "Walpurgisnacht," and one in Faust Part Two is called "Classical Walpurgisnacht." The last chapter of book five in Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain is also called "Walpurgisnacht." In Edward Albee's 1962 play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Act Two is entitled "Walpurgisnacht."

From Bram Stoker's short story, Dracula's Guest, an Englishman (whose name is never mentioned) is on a vis- it to Munich before leaving for Transylvania. It is Walpurgis Night, and in spite of the hotelier's warning not to be late coming back, the young man later leaves his carriage and wanders toward the direction of an aban- doned "unholy" village. As the carriage departs with the frightened and superstitious driver, a tall and thin stranger scares the horses at the crest of a hill.

In some parts of northern coastal regions of Germany, the custom of lighting huge fires is still kept alive to cel- ebrate the coming of May, while most parts of Germany have a derived Christianized custom around Easter called "Easter fires" (Österfeuer).

Culture of Germany, Part 3 - (to be continued next month) From excerpts from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Cinema German cinema dates back to the very early years of the medium with the work of Max Skladanowsky. It was particularly influential during the years of the Weimar Republic with German expressionists such as Robert Wiene and Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Austri- an-based director Fritz Lang, who became a German citizen in 1926 and whose career flourished in the pre-war German film indus- try, is said to have been a major influence on Hollywood cinema. His silent movie Metropolis (1927) is referred to as the birth of modern Science Fiction movies. Founded in 1912, the Babelsberg Film Studio is the oldest large-scale film studio in the world.

In 1930, Josef von Sternberg directed The Blue Angel, which was the first major German sound film and it brought world fame to actress Marlene Dietrich. Impressionist documentary Berlin: Symphony of a Great City, directed by Walter Ruttmann, is a promi- nent example of the city symphony genre. The Nazi era produced mostly propaganda films although the work of Leni Riefenstahl still introduced new aesthetics to film.

During the 1970s and 1980s, New German Cinema directors such as Volker Schlöndorff, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, and Rain- er Werner Fassbinder put West German cinema back on the international stage with their often provocative films. More recently, films such as Good Bye Lenin! (2003), Gegen die Wand (Head-on) (2004), Der Untergang (Downfall) (2004), and Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (2008) have enjoyed international success.

The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film went to the German production Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) in 1979, to Nowhere in Africa in 2002, and to Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) in 2007. Among the most famous German actors are Marlene Dietrich, Klaus Kinski, Hanna Schygulla, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Jürgen Prochnow, Thomas Kretschmann, Til Schwei- ger and Daniel Brühl.

The Berlin Film Festival, held annually since 1951, is one of the world's foremost film festivals. An international jury places empha- sis on representing films from all over the world and awards the winners with the Golden and Silver Bears. The annual European Film Awards ceremony is held every second year in the city of Berlin, where the European Film Academy (EFA) is located. The Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam are the oldest large-scale film studios in the world and a centre for international film production.
