Afterwards follow the route of the explorer, Ernest Giles, as you cross one of the largest rivers of Central Australia, The Palmer, which flows into the sand dunes of the Simpson Desert and has the potential to break through the sand dunes and flow again into Lake Eyre. You are now in part of the Great Lake Eyre Basin. The plateau you view to the north was once the coastline of Southern Australia. Fossils and outcrops of Stromatolites provide ancient records of life on earth by fossil remains, which might date from more than 3.5 billion years ago. Stop to view the scars on the earth’s surface made by meteorites landing and exploding – The Henbury Craters. Rejoin the Stuart Highway and travel into Stuarts Well; a small settlement where you stay in air-conditioned cabins with private bathroom. Enjoy an evening with the locals and tourists at Jim’s Place, a tavern – a pub and certainly an iconic outback stopover.

Just imagine a white salt lake in the foreground framed by mulga scrub, the brilliant colours of the mountain range and the blue sky with the occasional fluffy white cloud. The ideal spot for a cuppa and cake on a campstool for morning break.
