England will guarantee their place at UEFA EURO 2016 with a victory against Group E back-markers San Marino in their first autumn qualifier. Previous meetings • England beat San Marino 5-0 at Wembley in the sides' first Group E meeting; their record in five games against San Marino is W5 D0 L0 (W2 D0 L0 away). England scored 31 goals in those games (an average of over six per match), conceding just once. • That goal was a very famous one indeed, Davide Gualtieri striking 8.3 seconds into a FIFA World Cup qualifier, staged in Bologna on 17 November 1993; it remains the fastest goal in the history of the competition, in qualifying or a final tournament. It was the striker's only international goal in nine appearances for San Marino. • It was the final game in the section, with England's 7-1 win not enough to take them to the finals in the United States. Disciplinary • Manuel Battistini, Alex Gasperoni, Mirko Palazzi, Danilo Rinaldi, Andy Selva and Davide Simoncini are all a yellow card away from a suspension. • England forward Raheem Sterling is a booking away from a one-game ban. Form guide • San Marino have yet to win a competitive match; their only friendly victory to date was a 1-0 triumph against Liechtenstein on 28 April 2004, Andy Selva scoring the only goal. • San Marino are the only side yet to score after six rounds of qualifiers; they have not scored in seven competitive games (D1 L6) since Alex Della Valle equalised in a 5-1 home defeat by Poland in September 2013. However, the 0-0 draw against Estonia in their last home qualifier last November was the first time they have avoided defeat in a EURO qualifier at the 60th attempt. • England and Slovakia are the only sides who won their opening six games in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying. • England are unbeaten in 25 qualifying games (W18 D7) since a 1-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Ukraine on 10 October 2009. There have been 14 games (W11 D3) since their last EURO qualifying defeat – 3-2 at home to Croatia on 21 November 2007. Trivia and links • Only Poland's Robert Lewandowski (7) has scored more than Danny Welbeck's six in qualifying to date. • England's Wayne Rooney has had more shots on (18) and off target (15) than any other player in qualifying after six games. • The nations' five meetings in UEFA age-group tournaments have been similarly one sided; England have won all five fixtures by an aggregate score of 32-0. • San Marino can take some encouragement from their national futsal team, who recorded the best Sammarinese result against an England side in FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifying, losing 5-3 in a preliminary round game staged in Latvia.

6 San Marino - England Saturday 5 September 2015 - 18.00CET (18.00 local time) Match press kit San Marino Stadium, Serravalle Head coach Pierangelo Manzaroli Date of birth: 25 March 1969 Nationality: Sammarinese Playing career: SS Cosmos, SP Cailungo, , SS Pennarossa Coaching career: SS Pennarossa, AC Libertas, San Marino Under-15, San Marino Under-21, San Marino • After starting his career in the local league, the midfielder had a successful two-year spell with San Marino Calcio in the Italian fourth division before returning to the Sammarinese league to play for Pennarossa, where he started to work as a coach in 2006/07, leading the team to the league title in his first season on charge. • Capped 38 times for San Marino between 1991 and 2001, Manzaroli left Pennarossa at the end of the 2006/07 season to join AC Libertas and led his new team to a historic 1-1 draw against Irish club Drogheda United FC in a 2007/08 UEFA Cup game. • Manzaroli than earned another notable coup when he led a San Marino side through the preliminary round of the 2008/09 UEFA Regions' Cup before being appointed as coach of the Under-21 national team in 2010. • He led the U21s to some hugely surprising results in qualifying for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship – a stalemate against Greece in June 2012 and a 1-0 victory against Wales in September 2013 – before being appointed to replace long-standing San Marino senior coach Giampaolo Mazza in 2014. Roy Hodgson Date of birth: 9 August 1947 Nationality: English Playing career: Crystal Palace FC, Tonbridge Angels FC, Gravesend and Northfleet FC, Maidstone United FC, Berea Park FC Coaching career: Halmstads BK, Bristol City FC, IK Oddevold, Örebro SK, Malmö FF, Neuchâtel Xamax FC, Switzerland, FC Internazionale Milano (twice), Blackburn Rovers FC, Grasshopper Club, FC København, Udinese Calcio, United Arab Emirates, Viking FK, Finland, Fulham FC, Liverpool FC, West Bromwich Albion FC, England • After he spent most of his playing days in the English non-league system, Hodgson's coaching career spanning eight countries began with Halmstad. He guided the Swedish club to their first-ever Allsvenskan titles in 1976 and 1979; then guided Malmö to top of the table for five years in a row, although the play-off system then used meant they were champions only twice in that time. • A period at Xamax followed before the first of four forays into international management. Hodgson's Switzerland qualified for the 1994 FIFA World Cup – their first in 28 years – and then EURO '96 but the coach departed for Inter before the latter tournament. • After taking the Nerazzurri to the 1997 UEFA Cup final, Hodgson had spells in England, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, the UAE, Norway and Finland, as well as a short stint back at Inter as technical director. • He returned to England and relegation-threatened Fulham in 2007/08, helping them to safety in his first term, a club- best seventh in the Premier League in his second and then the 2010 UEFA Europa League final. The 2-1 extra-time defeat by Club Atlético de Madrid proved his last game with the Cottagers, before he accepted the reins at Liverpool. • He left Anfield after 31 matches in charge, the shortest reign in Liverpool history, yet within five weeks was at West Brom, whom he steered to a then Premier League high of 11th. He was appointed England manager on 1 May 2012 and took them to the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2012 and the 2014 World Cup, where they failed to get out of the group stage.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
