Não fazendo parte dos nossos objectivos levar a cabo um estudo biográfico sobre o autor do Tratado da Ruação, que consideramos no entanto urgente acontecer, a investigação levada a cabo neste capítulo reporta quase exclusivamente à consulta de fontes indirectas. Apesar de sintética encontra-mos alusão ao seu nome em diversos dicionários e enciclopédias. Sousa Viterbo1 e José Manuel Pedreirinho2 constituem leitura obrigatória neste capítulo. O primeiro refere-o como architecto da igreja da Ordem Terceira do Carmo, cuja primeira pedra foi lançada a 29 de agosto de 1756 3, remetendo para a sua fonte Francisco Patricio, Resumo histórico da fundação e desenvolvimento da venerável Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo no Porto 4. O segundo escreve acerca dele que é natural de Viseu, desconhe-se-se a data do seu nascimento, morre no Porto em 1773. I know it’s not what many of you would have planned, but with the restrictions on foreign travel, potential quarantine rules and the inadvisability of certain types of holidays (e.g. cruises) we need to be flexible and look closer to home. Fortunately, this being Switzerland, there are a lot of options. Unfortunately the depths of human stupidity know no bounds. We know that Covid-19 is still around and we have few defenses against it, but that does not seem to stop some people acting like it doesn’t exist. Numbers are up again in many countries, and in some dramatically. Please remember that we each share a responsibility to contribute to the management of the disease as our decisions don’t affect only ourselves. So stick to the hygiene rules, maintain separation, wear a mask if in doubt and download and use the Swiss Covid app. With these relatively simple and fairly painless measures we can make a big difference to the progression of the disease, help save lives and avoid further draconian lock-down measures. As mentioned in the last newsletter, the IMCZ is starting to return to “normal”, as far as possible given the Covid guidelines. Pelas suas múltiplas edições, em diversas línguas, a obra possui variados motivos de capa, desde o elemento floresta, ao rio, aos animais selvagens, à presença de inúmeras figuras humanas, ora indígenas, ora africanas, ora européias. A metodologia usada, tendo em conta que se trata de um estudo em progresso, é sobretudo de âmbito qualitativo, alicerçando-se numa análise descritiva, semiótica e interpretativa das sinopses e dos temas presentes num corpus composto por 25 capas de “A Selva”. Dessa análise destaca-se, desde já, a presença da floresta em detrimento da árvore, a figura masculina em vez de feminina, a cor verde em relação às demais. Procurar-se-á refletir ainda sobre os vários sentidos ocultos das capas propostas, antecedendo esse estudo com uma interpretação da relação imagem-texto de outras obras relevantes do autor.     O Portugal amazônico de Ferreira de Castro e a Amazônia nordestina de Paulo Jacob: Um olhar de entre-dois sobre a terra natal1 Karina Marques Universidade de Poitiers Resumo: Os romances A Selva (1930), do escritor português Ferreira de Castro (1898-1974), e Dos Ditos Passados nos Acercados do Cassianã (1969), do escritor brasileiro Paulo Jacob (1921-2004), possuem como tema comum a vida de seus protagonistas migrantes num seringal amazônico, durante o primeiro ciclo gomífero. Através dessa experiência iniciática, esses personagens afastam-se de um discurso atávico sobre as suas origens lusitana e nordestina (“identidade-idem”), aproximando-se da realidade amazônica (“identidade- ipse”) (Ricœur 1990). Nosso objetivo é analisar como esse olhar de entre-dois reconstrói a imagem da terra natal, observando as relações socio-históricas entre colônia e metrópole, e entre as regiões norte e nordeste do Brasil. Proporemos, por fim, uma reflexão sobre a falta de visibilidade dessas obras dentro do panorama literário brasileiro. Palavras-chave: Ferreira de Castro; Paulo Jacob; seringal; borracha; Amazônia; exiliência Abstract: The novels A Selva (1930), by the Portuguese writer Ferreira de Castro (1898-1974), and Dos Ditos Passados nos Acercados do Cassianã (1969), by the Brazilian writer Paulo Jacob (1921-2004), have as a common theme the lives of migrant in an Amazonian rubber plantation, during the first rubber era. Through this initiation experience, they deviate from an atavistic speech about their Lusitanian and Northeastern origins (“idem-identity”), as they approach the Amazonian reality (“ipse-identity”) (Ricœur 1990). Our goal is to analyze how this in-between look reconstructs the image of the homeland, noting the socio-historical relations between colony and metropolis, and between the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.
