Kessinger Field at Porter Family Stadium is the home of the Highland Community College Scottie Football team. The field is named after former coach and Hall of Famer Dale Kessinger, while the stadium center overal loking the field is name for Mack and the late Mary Helen Porter who donated $250,000 to help with the resurfacing of Kessinger field to turf.

Kessinger Field over went a facelift prior to the 2018 season as ATG Sports resurfaced the field with a syn- thetic turf (RamTurf) football field. The field features alternating field green and field green/lime mix colors rotating every five yards outside of the portion between each 45-yard line which is solid field green and fea- tures a 30’ diameter Block H logo, navy in color with yellow and white trim. Each end zone is navy in color and feature 15’ yellow block letters with white trim with the west end zone saying “Highland” and the east end zone saying “Scotties.” Also new goal posts were constructed for the new turf playing surface.

Not only is the playing surface be new at Kessinger Field but the football stadium will now feature a LED video scoreboard on the northwest portion of the field. The video display scoreboard is a Daktronics video board one of the leading companies in the business as they provide video scoreboards for over 75% of the teams in the main four Leagues – MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. The scoreboard will be 31’5 high by 32’ wide in its full size, while the full video display will be 16’ by 28’.

With the removal of the track at Kessigner Field, Highland is now the only team in the KJCCC that has a football only facility that doesn’t share it with another sport or school. Page 5 2018 Highland Community College Football

Athletic Training Services The Athletic Training Room is a fully independent operation of athletics that employs two certified athletic trainers supported by athletic training students. As physician extenders, the staff provides athletes with what they would receive from a physician’s office. Injured athletes do not have to schedule appoint- ments or travel to receive medical services because the ATR is directly in the athletic setting. That mission is to prevent and care for athletic injuries while improving the performance of all Highland athletes, and their dedication to this mission is one reason HCC athletics compete at a superior level.

2017 Season Recap It was a strong start and finish to the 2017 season for Highland Community College football with a win in the season opener on the road at Dodge City and finishing the season winning two of the final three games beating Fort Scott and Ellsworth, but in the middle the Scotties faced plenty of adversity leading to a 4-6 overall record and 2-5 KJCCC mark.

The season saw some record numbers on defense for for Highland but some struggles on offense over the course of the season. Four of the six losses came by four points for less for the Scotties and five of the six losses were to Top 25 ranked teams.

Highland defense had one of the best seasons in school history and finished the yearTop 10 in the Nation in multiple categories as they stonewalled opponents giving up just 17.2 opp points per game the best mark under Head Coach Aaron Arnold and best in a single season in school history since 1993. The 17.2 points per game mark ranked eighth in the Nation and second in the KJCCC, while the total points surrendered on the season in 172 in the second fewest in a season for Highland. Scotties defense was stout all-around giving up just 241.3 yards per game (sixth in Nation | second in KJCCC), 138 yards passing per game (seventh in Nation | second in KJCCC) and 103.3 yards rushing per game (13th in Nation | first in KJCCC).

On offense while leading the KJCC in rushing with 207 yards per game the Scotties struggled finding the endzone finishing with the lowestpoints per game under Arnold’s tenure averaging just 19.7 points pergame (lowest mark in five years). The Scotties struggled stemmed from a carasoul of quarterback’s with four different signal callers during the season leading to a Conference low 293.5 yards per game and just 86.5 yards passing per game.

The Scotties had struggles the team challenge on a weekly basis but finish with the lowest win total in a season under Arnold and snapped a run of four-straight seasons of .500 or better records for the Scotties. 2017 Results DATE OPPONENT FINAL Aug 24th at Dodge City W 26-21 Sep 2nd vs Garden City L 27-23 Sep 16th at Iowa Central W 34-0 Sep 23rd at Hutchinson L 13-10 OT Oct 7th vs Butler L 6-2 Oct 15th vs Independence L 9-6 Oct 21st at Iowa Western L 48-24 Oct 28th vs Fort Scott W 27-21 Nov 4th at Coffeyville L 27-10 Nov 11th vs Ellsworth W 35-0 Page 12 2018 Highland Community College Football

2018 Season Preview After a tough 4-6 season last year that saw the Highland football team looks to bounce back in 2018 as Head Coach Aaron Arnold enters his fifth season at the helm and the team heads into the year with plenty of attention an anticipation surrounding the program with the field upgrades, as Kessinger field received a face- lift with turf.

OFFENSE Offensively the Scotties struggled to consistently to find the endzone and develop consistency averaging 19.7 points per game and 293.5 yards per game, lowest numbers under Arnold for a season. Scotties were effective in the run game last season leading the KJCCC with 207 yards per game and head into the 2018 season with a stable of capable runningbacks. Kevin Brown (Mt. Pleasant, SC) returns to lead the way in the backfield as he comes back off an injury that limited him to only four games last year but he averaged 68.3 yards per game in those four contests and ran for 108 yards versus Dodge City. Justin Ruiz (Atlanta, GA) and DD Hull (Iva, SC) are also back in the fold and will vie for strong playing time both finishing the season strong averaging 5.8 and 6.3 yards per carry, respectively while Hull ran for 161 yards in the season finale against Ellsworth. While the rushing attack was strong the pass game struggled in part due to the carousel at quarterback with four different guys at signal caller last year. The Scotties hope to find more stability at the quarterback spot this season and have multiple options. Xavier Shephard (Atlanta, GA) returns with some experience from last year but is coming back from an injury, while Avery McCall (Dillon, SC) transfers in from Coastal Carolina and Kenny Mayberry (Cincinnati, OH) a true freshman is in the mix. Both Shephard and McCall lead the pack for the quarterback spot after their spring performance. The pass catchers will look plenty different also for Highland with opportunities for many. Tra Parker (Augusta, GA) returns with some experience, while a pair of transfers hope to jump in and make an immediate impact as Antoine Thompson (Plant City, FL) comes from NC State and Greg Payton (Atlanta, Georgia) comes from University of West Georgia and has spring ball with the Scotties under his belt. Many freshman have the chance to get right into the mix at receiver with guys like Emanuel Stores, JaQuavius Smith (Talbotton, GA) and Jakaree Gadsden (Kingsland, GA) looking promising early on. Some other guys that can make an impact in the pass game are at tight end and after a season that saw himself line up at quarterback quite a bit, Naricuss Driver (Griffin, GA) transitions back to tight end and gives the Scotties a great athlete at that spot. Some newcomers that will look to make an impact at tight end include Division II transfer, Jo’marr Davis (McKinney, TX) and Chris Leaks (Cincinnati, OH) who after a year off of football has shown some great potential to be an impact player.

The offensive line while have a new look with the main starters gone from last year but a trio of guys return for their sophomore campaigns and all three have a chance to be some of the most highly recruited lineman under Coach Arnold. Robert Jones (Chicago, IL), Bailey Malovic (Irmo, SC) and Sterling Brown (Talbotton, GA) all will be asked lead the battle in the trenches. After a redshirt season last year Qua Pitts (Gray, Georgia) looks to solidify a spot along the offensive line, while youngsters like Jarvis Jones (Vero Beach, FL) and Amaud Simmons (Oxford, AL) have put themselves into the mix upfront, also. Page 13 2018 Highland Community College Football

2018 Season Preview DEFENSE On defense the Scotties had their best performance under Coach Arnold’s tenure holding opponents to 17.2 points per game (leading the KJCCC) and only 172 total points on the season which is the second lowest total in school history, while giving up just 241.3 yards per game and overall ranking in the Top 10 in the Nation. Headed into the 2018 season the Scotties while have some strong pieces to replace including several Division I signees. The linebacker core perhaps took the biggest hit as last year’s group was the best Highland has seen in years but two of those guys have moved on leaving only Reco Hannah (Randolph Clay, AL) who returns to help lead the charge on defense. Hannah who was the team’s third leading tackler last year (63) gives the team a hard hitting leader that can get to the quarterback but he will need help at linebacker and the return of Jacquez Washington (Macon, GA) and De’Andre Peterson (Charleston, SC) will help as their roles will increase, while Jonathan Thompson who played in the secondary last year will slip into a backer roll.

Upfront along the defensive line the Scotties have South Carolina commit and a top ranked JUCO defensive tackle in Jahkeem Green (Sumter, SC) back, while Jamaal Wynter (McDonough, GA) returns also to help plug the middle of the line. A transfer from NEO in Yalvitzs Jones (Warner Robbins, GA) will work right into the mix along the line but the Scotties will need plenty of others to set up a fill the rotation. The secondary will be led by an All-KJCCC returner as Darius Johnson (Gray, GA) is back after leading the team in interceptions (4) last year and he will help anchor the safety spot while Amarrian Brown (Warner Robbins, GA) also returns with experience at that spot. At corner the Scotties return Damarrion Williams (Atlanta, GA) who played well as freshman in his time on the field, while new guys like Wesly Appolon (Quebec, CA) and Brian George (Everglades, FL) expect to fill in at the cornerback position.

SPECIAL TEAMS The third aspect of the game is always important in many ways and the Scotties found ways to make special teams play a strong roll last year. Highland made 10 field goals during the season third most in the KJCCC and had a kicker convert on 90+ percent of his extra points. While the Scotties led the KJCCC in punt return yards per return (22.9), even returning two punts for touchdowns and blocked six kicks on the season. This year the specialist spots will be new for Highland as the punter position belongs to Maxim Spruell (Carrolton, GA), while the kicker spot will be a battle between three guys with kickoff and field goals possibly split. Daiwruin Arzu (Lake Charles, LA), Jesus Ascencio (Mableton, GA) and FAU transfer, Ryan Schemtob (Coral Springs, FL) all vying for the kicking position. In the return game the Scotties will look to utilize some of their top playmakers.

SYNOPSIS Highland head into the season looking to put 2017 in the rear view and post another winning season under Coach Arnold and his staff and challenge for a top spot in the KJCCC. Scotties hope to develop more con- sistency on the offensive side of the ball and on defense hope to have playmakers step up to fill voids to continue their momentum from last season. The season starts with a home date on the new turf at Kessinger Field at Porter Family stadium against Fort Scott and then the Scotties get plenty of home cooking early with four of the first five games at home. A three game road stretch spans four weeks starting in late September with trips to Iowa Central, Hutchinson and Garden City, before a pair of home contests with Dodge City and Page 14 2018 Highland Community College Football
