Porter Family Stadium

Porter Family Stadium had a nice facelift prior to the 2018 season as Kessinger Field was resurfaced with synthetic turf and new LED videoboard was installed in the northwester portion of the field. The stadium including the Stadium Center which houses the football coaches offices and serves as the pressbox is named after Mack and the late Mary Helen Porter who donated $250,000 to help with the renovation project of the football field. The field is named after former coach and Hall of Famer, Dale Kessinger.

ATG Sports resurfaced the field with a synthetic turf (RamTurf) football field. The field features alternating field green and field green/lime mix colors rotating every five yards outside of the portion between each 45- yard line which is solid field green and features a 30’ diameter Block H logo, navy in color with yellow and white trim. Each end zone is navy in color and feature 15’ yellow block letters with white trim with the west end zone saying “Highland” and the east end zone saying “Scotties.” Also new goal posts were constructed for the new turf playing surface.

Not only is the playing surface be new at Kessinger Field but the football stadium will now feature a LED video scoreboard on the northwest portion of the field. The video display scoreboard is a Daktronics video board one of the leading companies in the business as they provide video scoreboards for over 75% of the teams in the main four Leagues – MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. The scoreboard will be 31’5 high by 32’ wide in its full size, while the full video display will be 16’ by 28’.

With the removal of the track at Kessigner Field, Highland is now the only team in the KJCCC that has a football only facility that doesn’t share it with another sport or school. Page 5 2019 Highland Community College Football

Athletic Training Services The Athletic Training Room is a fully independent operation of athletics that employs two certified athletic trainers supported by athletic training students. As physician extenders, the staff provides athletes with what they would receive from a physician’s office. Injured athletes do not have to schedule appoint- ments or travel to receive medical services because the ATR is directly in the athletic setting. That mission is to prevent and care for athletic injuries while improving the performance of all Highland athletes, and their dedication to this mission is one reason HCC athletics compete at a superior level.

2018 Season Recap For the third time in five seasons under Head Coach, Aaron Arnold the Highland football team fin- ished with a winning record and for the second time the Scotties finished in theTop 20 in the NJCAA polls. Scotties battled on the new turf field at Porter Family Stadium in the 2018 season on the Highland campus finishing the season with a 6-4 record and #17 ranking in the Nation.

The Scotties throughout the season had eight of their 10 games decided by single digits and were locked in battles week after week as they opened the season with a pair of wins topping Fort Scott by one at home and beating Ellsworth on the road by a touchdown. Week three the Scotties suffered a tight loss to Butler but responded beating Coffeyville in Overtime at home a game in which the Scotties had seven interceptions on defense. Highland moved to 4-1 on the season with a three-point road win at Iowa Central marking the halfway point of the season. Scotties then faced three Top five teams in next five games and all on the road and unfortunately came up short in those contests against Hutchinson, Garden City and Iowa Western, but were able to snag wins over Dodge City and Independence at home during that five game span to finish 6-4.

Throughout the season the offense had its moments of smoothly moving the ball while other times struggling to find consistency as the Scotties averaged 25.6 points per game during the season on 295.4 yards per game. While on defense the Scotties surrendered 28.4 points per game on 356.6 yards per game but did force 28 turnovers, record 28 sacks and score five touchdowns.

The Scotties finished with 17 players earning All-KJCCC honors on the season the most under Coach Arnold, while 15 players ultimately earned Division I opportunities with several others moving on to four-year schools at other levels.

With another solid winning season under the belt Coach Arnold and the Highland football program heads into the 2019 season eager to see what the future has in store for the Scottie football. 2018 Results DATE OPPONENT FINAL Aug 25th vs Fort Scott W 29-28 Sep 1st at Ellsworth W 17-10 Sep 8th vs Butler L 35-27 Sep 22nd vs RV Coffeyville W 47-38 (OT) Sept 29th at Iowa Central W 21-18 Oct 6th at #5 Hutchinson L 13-16 Oct 20th at #2 Garden City L 51-31 Oct 27th vs Dodge City W 40-33 Nov 3rd vs Independence W 24-21 Nov 10th at #3 Iowa Western L 34-7 Page 14 2019 Highland Community College Football

2019 Season Preview In five years under the guidance of Head Coach, Aaron Arnold the Highland football team has finished fourth or better four of the five times in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and last year the Scotties posted a 6-4 record and fourth place finish in the Conference. It marked the third winning season under Coach Arnold and his six wins moved him to 28 in his career giving him the third most in school history. Now year two on the turf field at Porter Family stadium looms in Coach Arnold’s sixth year as Head Coach and the Scotties look to replace plenty of production from 2018 season including 15 NCAA Division I athletes and compete in the strong KJCCC.

OFFENSE The Scotties offense featured some solid playmakers in 2018 as the team averaged 25.6 points per game but struggled to find consistency from game-to-game as they scored 30+ points three times but also tallied less than 20 points three times on the season. Highland for the second straight year average just under 300 yards per game on offense and heading into the 2019 season the team brings back only couple of players offensive production from the 2018 season. In the backfield the Scotties will be featuring plenty of new pieces at both quarterback and runningback. The signal caller spot is up for grabs as it’s a three-horse race between a trio of players that all spent the spring with the program. Kenny Mayberry (Cincinnati, OH) returns with the most time under his belt in the Scotties system as he was with the team for the 2018 but did not see the field; Mayberry brings a savvy in the pocket and strong arm to the fold. While the duo of Jaylen Nelson (Columbia, SC) and Joseph Cambridge (Riverdale, GA) who both were with the Scotties in the spring give Highland options for a dual threat style quarterback. The Scotties quite possibly could operate with a multi-quarterback system to give the offense different looks.

After returning some strong runners the past few years Highland will look to a brand new group of at the tailback spot. However there will be a familiar face to Highland fans in the backfield but he makes the move to runningback this year after playing defensive back last year, as Kalil Brawner (Manchester, GA) returns from injury that ended his season two games in last year. Brawner had 15 tackles, an and sack in those two games but now he looks to rekindle his high school days as a tailback and help establish some offense for the Scotties. Multiple freshman have the opportunity to take over the role of tailback with guys like DeMarco Fishback (Lexington, KY) and Omarious Burnam (Covington, GA) a pair of names to watch.

The pass catching crew looks talented with the potential to be filled with some solid playmakers for the Scotties. At wide receiver Antoine Thompson (Plant City, FL) the transfer from NC State is back after playing last year catching 14 passes for 165 yards. Two other transfers have the chance to impact Highland in the pass game as D’Jaundre Edwards (Royal Palm Beach, FL) and Cam McKinney (Birmingham, AL) come to Highland from Purdue and Jacksonville State, respectively. Dabarre Jenkins (Ocala, FL) and Rae’Quan Prince (Cincinnati, OH) also have put their names into the fold for the Scotties at receiver. Page 15 2019 Highland Community College Football

2019 Season Preview Tight end brings back an All-KJCCC player for the Scotties as sophomore, Javon Henderson (Atlanta, GA) returns after blocking well last year and caught two passes both for touchdowns. Sophomore, Deontay Campbell (Montgomery, AL) is also back with experience in the Highland system and looks to make the leap into game action. Another name to watch at the tight end spot is Andrew Kelow (Kansas City, MO) who transfers to Highland after time at Quincy University (red-shirted) and the University of Kansas (set out per transfer rules); Kelow has the potential to be an impact player.

In the trenches along the offensive line the Scotties are replacing several guys including three NCAA DI players from last year. Sophomores, Jarvis Jones (Vero Beach, FL) and Javier Robinson (Upper Marlboro, MD) are back with some game action from last year under their belt to lead a group that could be quite young. Freshman, Chris Carter (Aurora, IL) and Semaje Garrett (Brooklyn Park, MN) both are performing well early, while Donte Williams (Rockmart, GA) another freshman is making the move from defensive line to offensive line for the Scotties.

DEFENSE After ranking second in the KJCCC in 2016 and 2017 in opponents points per game the Scotties surrendered 28.4 points per game in 2018 the most during the tenure of Coach Arnold. However while the Scotties gave up points the defense made plenty of plays forcing 28 turnovers (including 18 interceptions), recording 28 sacks and scoring five touchdowns. The defensive line has been a strong suit of the Scotties over the years as Highland as sent 16 players to DI programs along the defensive line under Coach Arnold in five seasons. This year the Scotties have some guys that are candidates to add to that list. Travis Geiger (Columbus, OH) inside enters the season with multiple DI offers including one from Nebraska while, Daveion Wilson (Garland, TX) will also factor into the mix upfront in the middle. At the end the looming presence of Georgia Southern transfer, Josh Johnson (Duluth, GA) will be big for the Scotties while Bobby Kelly (Warner Robbins, GA) looks to get into the mix also. The linebacker position has been a strong spot for the Scotties the past few seasons and produced the team’s top two tacklers last year including an All-American. This year Indiana transfer, De’Morreal Burnam (Conyers, GA) along with CJ Harris (Warner Robbins, GA) who has picked up DI interest over the summer will look to lead the way in the middle of the Highland defense.

Secondary was produced some strong players over the past few years for the Scotties and has had a knack for taking the ball away and making big plays. Leading the charge in the defensive backfield is sophomore, Brian George (Belle Glade, FL) who enters the season ranked as one of the top cornerbacks in JUCO with over 20 NCAA DI offers including a school from every Power Five Conference. George played in all 10 games last year as a freshman recording 32 tackles. Sophomore, Daryan Ingram (Jackson, GA) also returns in the secondary after seeing action in seven games last year recording six tackles and an interception. At safety Jae’vion Matthews returns after a red-shirt season with the Scotties, while the trio of William McCall (Warner Robbins, GA), Jamari Hill (Valdosta, GA) and DeJaun Brown (McDonough, GA) all will factor into the mix. Page 16 2019 Highland Community College Football

2019 Season Preview SPECIAL TEAMS The third facet of the game of football is always important and played a factor in big ways for the Scotties during the 2018 season showcasing the importance of kicking, punting and the return game. Replacing the best kicker in school history while not be easy as Ryan Schemtob, now at Southern Miss set school records for most field goals in a single season and owns the three longest field goals in school history. Finn Rudd will factor into the punting and kicking equation for the Scotties while Jeri Velasquez (Cincinnati, OH) will also be in the mix for the kicking duties. In the return game the Scotties averaged under 15 yards per return with one touchdown and will look to improve that in 2019 to add another dynamic to the fold.

SYNPOSIS Highland enters the 2019 season eager to build on a solid 2018 season and looks to continue to compete for a top spot in the tough KJCCC. Scotties hope to find the right pieces to the puzzle to put things together for 2019 as the team looks to replace plenty of experience. Scotties will open the season on the road in a night contest on August 24th at Fort Scott at 7:00pm and the will have their home opener the following week against Ellsworth. After week two it’s two straight weeks on the road at Butler and Coffeyville, before three straight home games against Iowa Central, Hutchinson and Garden City. To finish off the season the Scotties will be on the road late October and early November at Dodge City and Independence before wrapping up the season at home against Iowa Western.
