A/C.5/71/7 Mohammed Farashuddin (Bangladesh) An economist by training and socio -economist by conviction as well as practice Mohammed Farashuddin is currently the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of East West University (EWU). The work entails significant responsibilities in management and compensation of 500 or so employees academic and non -teaching. He also was the Founder Vice Chancellor 1995 -98 of EWU, which is now a permanent sanad holder. In addition, he is a Senior Fellow and Member of the Board of Trustees of BIDS; Founder Member, Governing Council and Academic Council of the Bangladesh School of Economics; Senate Member, University of Dhaka; Syndicate Member, Jagannath University; Visiting Professor (occasional) at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka and East West University. Past Positions Amongst the past positions held by Mohammed Farashuddin, PhD are: Chairman, 8th National Pay and Services Commission 2013; the commission carefully analyzed, logically argued and consistently articulated a set of recommendations for the 2.4 million public and semi-government employees to be transformed into a dynamic, efficient, smart and confident human capital for cashing on the momentum of the unprecedented socio -economic -cultural upsurge of the country. One of the major factors behind this change in policy paradigm, from an economic perspective, is the low to negative impact of trade liberalization through regional integration and other agreements on economic welfare, as perceived by the people of the respective countries. Generally, trade gains translate into economic growth; so regional trading agreements would need to be beneficial in terms of trade gains for the respective countries in order to increase economic welfare. Through the application of the gravity model of international trade, this paper tries to find out whether the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) has been beneficial in terms of trade balance improvement in four of the biggest economies of South Asia – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The findings suggest that even after ten years of SAFTA, regional trade is low, and SAFTA has had a positive effect only on the trade balance of India. Hence, this situation needs to be improved through lowering of tariff and non-tariff barriers and increased investment in connectivity, otherwise, given the current rise in protectionism in the world, there is a probability of events such as Brexit occurring in this region. -

Inadequate budgetary support from the government and inappropriate implementation of the same due to nonexistence of good governance and inefficient utilization of allocated amount due to session jam, unemployment, and job nature of the graduates are the major challenges of higher education budget in Bangladesh. Similarly, poor planning and inefficient implementation, slavish national politics in higher educational institutions, priority of political attachment and even political slavery over merit in selecting and promoting academic faculties and nonacademic staff and assigning different duties to them, abuse of public university autonomy, absence of quality research, mismatch between expected and actual study area and discipline, and also mismatched between expected and actual job are the noteworthy indirect challenges of higher education budget. This paper study found out some vital factors which might be real concern in observance of quality issues. The salient notions including organizational structural lapses, governance problems, modern teaching approach gaps, syllabus & curriculum design frailty, infrastructural shortages, top level policies and decisions problems, implementation problems & disparity factors, Bureaucracy, leadership defects, interference, resistances to changes, improper planning, lack of professionalism, lack of resources, favoritism are salient issues seen in this study. Political influences on environments, systems of teaching and learning leading to quality failures have got serious impacts on total output and development. Besides some other dominant factors include teachers‟ roles, assessments systems on students performances and continuations, stake holders attitudes, interest in profit makings have been major features in not assuring quality standards been identified. How Can We Increase the Quality of Private Schools in Bangladesh from the Perspectives of Students and Managers? Mohammad Salahuddin* Department of Business Administration, Southeast University, Banani, Dhaka, Bangladesh Rabiul Islam, Department of Economics, Monash University, Australia Dr. Delwar Akbar School of Geography, Planning and Architecture , The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Aus- tralia and Khaled Mahmud Raihan School of Business Studies, State University of Bangladesh, Dhaka, Bangladesh ABSTRACT This paper examines factors that determine students’ choices of private universities for tertiary study in Bangladesh. Tertiary study in private schools in Bangladesh is relatively a recent development in business. The study is fascinating in that, this new industry has been growing remarkably over the years and can potentially contribute to economic growth. Factor analysis was used to determine important factors in choosing a private university. The results suggest that endogenous factors such as fee structure, mode of payment, quality education and physical environment are significant in influ- encing choice variables while advertisements, logistics, credit transfer facilities and influence of peer group tend to have less influence. The main implication of this study is that despite diversity in the socio-economic set-up across different countries, certain variables such as fee structure, quality education and physical environment are likely to potentially influence students’ choice of private schools globally. Impact of In-Service Training on Teacher's Professional Life
Impact of In-service Training on Teacher’s Professional Life Md. Ashrafuzzaman1 Abstract : This study mainly focused on in-service teacher training and technologies which has great impact on teacher‟s professional life specially classroom practice, and professional activities out of classroom. The study was conducted in Paba upazilla of Rajshahi district with a teacher of secondary school. She is involved in English in Action (EIA) intervention and attends regular training program of EIA. It was conducted in an ethnographic type of research and used qualitative approach. Data were collected by observing one teacher for a three-day period, throughout the school day. Each day researcher gathered data through whole day observation of teacher‟s activities and collecting artifacts. After each day observation, the teacher was interviewed by semi structured interview schedule for more clarification for her activities. Collected data were analyzed thematically. Literature reveals that teachers learn little from traditional in-service training workshops but findings of the study showed that after getting EIA training she became more competent. She is trying to implement CLT approach in classroom and also trying to use technology in English teaching- learning though she had huge burden of extra classes and some other academic activities as well. Pre-service and in-service training institutes are playing a vital role in preparing efficient teachers, yet unfortunately our present teacher education program is not able to produce such qualified teachers (Ehsan, Akter, Biswas & Ashrafuzzaman, 2011).
