Kuala Lumpur is certainly making the right moves with its new infrastructure development plans. One methodology which has seen considerable success in the delivery of such projects in the UK is Public Private Partnerships.

The UK and the City of London offers expertise in all aspects of Public Private Partnerships [PPP]: mobilising finance, planning, procuring, managing and delivering projects from roads to hospitals, prisons to street lighting. British companies are keen to share their world-class expertise and work with Malaysia on its major commercial projects - including the Klang Valley Mass Rail Transport project.” The event concluded with a lively Q&A.

s one of the UKTI’s 20 ambassadors, Nick Fry, CEO of Mercedes GP Petronas was in town ahead of the Malaysian Formula 1 GP to A help enhance business links between the UK and Malaysia. At a BMCC Premier Luncheon sponsored by HSBC, he gave an engaging talk on the current trade environment followed by some interesting insights into the world of Formula 1.

“People keep saying that the UK doesn’t manufacture anything anymore. Well, frankly they are wrong. The sector is a lot bigger than people think. For example, we are the 6th largest manufacturer globally and 50 percent of our output is exported. The number of cars manufactured in the UK currently tops 1 million, of which 70 percent is exported. Some of the world’s most famous marques are produced in the UK: Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Lotus, Rolls-Royce, Nissan, Mini, to name a few.

You may question why tthishis is - it’s because we araree very good at auto- momotive engineering - a Crowne Plaza cocombination of value with ininnovation.n Two thirds of the cars on the F1 grgrid are engineered in ththe UK: MacLaren, Red BBull, Lotus, Renault are jjust some. This high pperformance engineer- iing also crosses over iinto other industries such as aerospace. For example, the UK has a technical partnership wtwthh CTRM ofof MalaysiaMalaysia forfor developingdev composites.

The innovation really comes into play when you look at the development cycles. For a road car it’s around three to À ve years. But for a Formula 1 car, which has 3,000 parts, they are all drawn, designed, engineered, tested and manufactured within six months. There’s also a long history of design education in the UK. There are 15 universities currently teaching motorsports education and all of them have strong links with business such as CranÀ eld with its MBA course.”

In the Q&A session that ffollowedo Nick answered ququestions on the architect of modern day Formula 1, BeBernie Ecclestone, Mich- aael Schumacher and the ggrowing number of night oor twilight races in the ccalendar. “Bernie is a vvery approachable and ddown to earth guy with a phenomenal memory. He has transformed the sport - it now attracts 600 million regular viewers - every race. That’s up there with the Olympics - but ththat only happens every four years. Michael was often cast as the villain of the piece but he is the best team player you can possibly imagine. As for the increase in night races, I think it’s important to have variety. It also reÁ ects the growing interest in this part of the world, which is absolutely great to see.”

Reduction of energy consumption and carbon emissions impact should be high on every organisation’s agenda. Apart from huge potential savings in energy costs, companies can also enhance their reputation in the market place by minimising their carbon footprint and so increase market share.
