Zen as a Creative Agency: Picturing Landscape in China and Japan from the Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries by Meng Ying Fan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Meng Ying Fan 2020 Zen as a Creative Agency: Picturing Landscape in China and Japan from the Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries Meng Ying Fan Master of Arts Department of East Asia Studies University of Toronto 2020 Abstract This essay explores the impact of Chan/Zen on the art of landscape painting in China and Japan via literary/visual materials from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. By rethinking the aesthetic significance of “Zen painting” beyond the art and literary genres, this essay investigates how the Chan/Zen culture transformed the aesthetic attitudes and technical manifestations of picturing the landscapes, which are related to the philosophical thinking in mind. Furthermore, this essay emphasizes the problems of the “pattern” in Muromachi landscape painting to criticize the arguments made by D.T. Suzuki and his colleagues in the field of Zen and Japanese art culture. Finally, this essay studies the cultural interaction of Zen painting between China and Japan, taking the traveling landscape images of Eight Views of Xiaoxiang by Muqi and Yujian from China to Japan as a case. It has taken NanHai and exhibiting artists more than one year to prepare for this exhibition, not to mention the energy and cost involved in international communication and logistics. Why did we spend so much time and effort to present Liu Kuo-sung? It can be traced back to when NanHai underwent the soul-searching process to reconfirm its mission. At that time, the first name that came to my mind was Liu Kuo-sung. As one of the earliest and most important advocates and practitioners of modernist Chinese painting, Liu has perfectly transcended Eastern and Western, tradition and modernity, established a new tradition of Chinese ink painting and successfully brought it to the center of the international art scene. Liu’s groundbreaking body of work best echoes NanHai’s commitment to present artworks that reflect the unique aesthetics of Chinese art while transcending cultural and artistic boundaries with a contemporary sensibility. -

107 Wallace Stevens and German Idealism: Reply to Bly Clive Stroud-Drinkwater Robert Bly liked Stevens' early poems but not his later ones: "The late poems are as weak as is possible for a genius to write; what is worse, most of them have the white nightgown mentality" (76). The phrase "white night gown" is from Stevens' "Disillusionment of Ten O'Clock" (Harmonium); the wearers of white nightgowns are the cautious people who, secure in their houses, do not enjoy colour, those who do not "dream of baboons and periwinkles." The implication is that Stevens slipped into that blank mind-set, as he got older. Certainly Stevens disapproves of the white-nightgown mentality. Much of his early poetry is a sermon on the value of the beauty of this world. In "Sunday Morning," for instance, he asks of a white-nightgown wearer, What is divinity if it can come Only in silent shadows and in dreams? Shall she not find in comforts of the sun, In pungent fruit and bright, green wings, or else In any balm or beauty of the earth, Things to be cherished like the thought of heaven? This is easy to comprehend: the details of the real world surpass abstract images of paradise: "And shall the earth I Seem all of paradise that we shall know?" The answer comes soon: of paradise Stevens writes, Why set the pear upon those river-banks Or spice the shores with odors of the plum? 108 Clive Stroud-Drinkwater Alas, that they should wear our colors there, The silken weavings of our afternoons, And pick the strings of our insipid lutes! AID, ATTITUDES AND AMBIVALENCE: THE IMPACT OF AUSTRALIAN AID IN THE INTRODUCTION AND SUSTAINABILITY OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION INITIATIVES IN THE REPUBLIC OF KIRIBATI Rodney Brian Yates Bachelor of Arts, Diploma in Education (University of NSW) Master of Arts (Macquarie University) Master of Analytical Psychology (University of Western Sydney) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Education Queensland University of Technology 2018 Keywords Australian Aid, Critical Pedagogy, Developing Countries, Development Aid, Inclusive Education, Kiribati, Pacific Island Nations Aid, Attitudes and Ambivalence: the impact of Australian Aid in the introduction and sustainability of inclusive education initiatives in the Republic of Kiribati i Abstract Foreign aid is political; donor governments set the agenda and oversee the use of aid in developing nations. Inclusive education is a socio-political construct emerging from the human rights movements in developed countries. This study examines the research questions of dependency on Australian Aid and local ownership/sustainability in the introduction of inclusive education initiatives in Kiribati through data analysis of documents, individual interview responses and school-based focus group discussions. The participants were key local stakeholders from both the aid recipient and donor viewpoints for the individual interviews and classroom teachers for the focus groups. The document analysis focused on the Kiribati Inclusive Education Policy (2015). Adherence to international (western) principles was predominant in the policy which was developed with significant input from external advisers. Process and values coding was used to examine the individual interviews and focus group responses. These responses indicted that a positive commitment towards inclusive education is emerging in Kiribati, particularly for local education professionals. -

The importance of incorporating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into the Secondary Curriculum in order to minimise the problems of waste on South Tarawa. By Sina Moy A thesis Submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Art in Geography Victoria University of Wellington 2008 Abstract Waste is an increasing problem in Small Island States (SIDs) such as Kiribati. In Kiribati the major concern is on the capital island, South Tarawa with more than 6,500 tons of solid waste generated each year. With only a tiny strip of land supporting a large population, it is no wonder it resulted as the highest population density compared to Tokyo. More than half of the Kiribati population lives on the capital, South Tarawa with an estimation of 150 people per/km². Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)/Environmental Education (EE) are taught through Social Studies, Science and other disciplinary subjects only in primary up to junior secondary school. The missing link of this ESD/EE can be found at the secondary level. The main aim of this research is to find out ways of incorporating ESD/EE at secondary level in order to help minimise waste issues that are present on urbanised South Tarawa. By formalising education for sustainable development/environmental education into the secondary school syllabus, it will help young citizens of Kiribati prepared as active members of society. As the Ministry of Education (NZ) states “Environmental education provides a relevant context for identifying, exploring, and developing values and attitudes that can ensure students' active participation in maintaining and improving the quality of the local, national, and global environment.” (Education for Sustainability). -

Degree awarded March 2013 ii © 2013 Hui Fang iii THESIS ABSTRACT Hui Fang Master of Arts Department of the History of Art and Architecture March 2013 Title: Sesshū Tōyō’s Selective Assimilation of Ming Chinese Painting Elements Sesshū Tōyō (1420-1506) was a preeminent Japanese monk painter who journeyed to China in the mid-fifteenth century. This thesis focuses on a diptych of landscape paintings by Sesshū, Autumn and Winter Landscapes 秋冬山水図 (Shūtou sansui zu), to analyze how Sesshū selectively synthesized traditions of Chinese painting tradition that had already been established in Japan and the art conventions he discovered in fifteenth-century China. To contextualize this topic, this thesis explores the revival of the Southern Song (1127-1279) painting tradition which had impacts on both contemporary Chinese painters and landscape painters in Japan during the fifteenth century. -

Missenden Abbey 'One-corner Ma' was a great painter in the Southern Song dynasty.
