I see Ellison's “American humanism” as a revitalization of the Latin notion of litterae humaniores that draws heavily on Gilded Age American literature and philosophy. For Ellison, American artists and intellectuals of that period were grappling with the country’s primary quandary after the Civil War: an inability to reconcile America’s progressive vision of humanism with the legacy left by chattel slavery and anti-black racism. -

107 Wallace Stevens and German Idealism: Reply to Bly Clive Stroud-Drinkwater Robert Bly liked Stevens' early poems but not his later ones: "The late poems are as weak as is possible for a genius to write; what is worse, most of them have the white nightgown mentality" (76). The phrase "white night gown" is from Stevens' "Disillusionment of Ten O'Clock" (Harmonium); the wearers of white nightgowns are the cautious people who, secure in their houses, do not enjoy colour, those who do not "dream of baboons and periwinkles." The implication is that Stevens slipped into that blank mind-set, as he got older. Certainly Stevens disapproves of the white-nightgown mentality. Much of his early poetry is a sermon on the value of the beauty of this world. In "Sunday Morning," for instance, he asks of a white-nightgown wearer, What is divinity if it can come Only in silent shadows and in dreams? Shall she not find in comforts of the sun, In pungent fruit and bright, green wings, or else In any balm or beauty of the earth, Things to be cherished like the thought of heaven? This is easy to comprehend: the details of the real world surpass abstract images of paradise: "And shall the earth I Seem all of paradise that we shall know?" The Anxiety of Irrelevance: Power, Dissent, and the Contest of Intellectual Virtues in the 1950s Allon Brann Senior Thesis April 2010 Advisor: Professor William Leach Second Reader: Professor Casey Blake 1 Acknowledgments If there is one thing about this essay that most satisfies me, it is that the process of writing it felt like a fitting conclusion to my undergraduate career. In conceiving of my project, I wanted to draw out the issues that most challenged me over four years of study, and to try to interrogate them, side by side, one last time. I want to say at the outset, then, that I believe each one of my extraordinary teachers at Columbia has contributed to this project. There has been no greater intellectual pleasure over the last four years than discovering unforeseen connections between the different texts and problems that I had the opportunity to investigate with each of them. There are, of course, a few whom I must identify here individually. Professor William Leach guided our seminar with great patience and taught me much about good historical writing. In addition to serving as my second reader for this essay, Professor Casey Blake laid the groundwork for my exploration of American intellectual history. He introduced me to many of the figures who have most inspired—and at times, troubled—me in my study of the past, and with whom I hope to continue to engage long after the completion of this project. I am grateful, as well, to Professor Ross Posnock, whose course pushed me to question the role of the thinker in American society, past and present. -

COUGHLIN, Ph.D., May 2013, English Another City Director of Dissertation: Mark Halliday The dissertation is divided into two sections: an essay titled “Stevens’ Ontology: Struggles of the Mind” and a book manuscript titled Another City. “Stevens’ Ontology: Struggles of the Mind” presents an examination of the ontological vision Wallace Stevens presents in his poem “Sunday Morning” and then considers problems this vision encounters in subsequent poems. Among the issues Stevens struggles with are the demands of his ego upon his imagination to elevate himself to the status of a deity, the pressures of personal grief and social unrest upon Stevens’ desire to remain a detached observer, and Stevens’ inability to produce a vision liberated from Christian rhetoric.
