connected with western history 3 what association did thomas bullock have with joseph smith and brigham young 4 in what way did he contribute to religious and profane history 5 what part did he play in the early development of the salt lake valleyvaileyand surrounding areas 6 what part did thomas play in the development of summit county delimitation of the probienproblemblenbienblem this study covers those experiences in the life of thomas bullock from his birth on december 23 1816 to his death on february 10 1885188 which are of historical importance to both pro- fane and religious history the body of this study is very detailed in re- gards to Bbullocksocks daily life experiences inasmuch as he played such an important role in the forming of the history of the west and was such an important figure historicauvhistorically in the church of jesus christ of latterlatterdayday saints since research reveals that thomas Bbullockock never resided or trav- eled in any countries except the british isles and america the study has 1 2 been confconcconfinedined tobo these two geographical limitsts investigation has found that no one has endeavored to write the corncompletepletepietestory of the life of thomas bullockB ock under one cover A number of writers have written short life sketches and some have used experiences from bullocks life to further their works but none of these writings have ever been over two or three pages in length derdefdefinitioninitionanition of terms most of the terms used in this work arethosearethuseare those of general knowledge to the average reader there are however a few terms used which are not in general use today and some which are peculiar in their use to a given society or church group the term salubrious as development of new movements and events research has shown that thomas bullock was a prolific writer and a giant at keeping records and may well be considered an important historian in his own right he was a major figure in the history of his time especially in western history and the settlement of western america as this study shows because of thomas bullocks intimate associations with joseph smith and brigham young he was well informed about latterdaylatterdarday saint history and the problems of the tinestimes and was well qualified to make major contributions in collecting and assisting to write the history of the church of jesus christ of latterlatterdayday saints during his time 1 the history of the latterlatterdayday saint is an important part of the history of the vestwest bullockB ock was the clerk and historian of the church during its westward 2 movements he helped to make the first currency in the salt lake Vvalleyvaileyey3eya 1journaljournal history of the church MicAael' J2umw Joseph Smith Ill's 1844 Blessing Ana The Mormons of Utah JVlembers of the Mormon Church headquartered in Salt Lake City may have reacted anywhere along the spectrum from sublime indifference to temporary discomfiture to cold terror at the recently discovered blessing by Joseph Smith, Jr., to young Joseph on 17 January 1844, to "be my successor to the Presidency of the High Priesthood: a Seer, and a Revelator, and a Prophet, unto the Church; which appointment belongeth to him by blessing, and also by right."1 The Mormon Church follows a line of succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., completely different from that provided in this document. To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period.

    Changes in the West : Mormons and the ecological geography of nationalism by Willard John McArthur A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Montana State University © Copyright by Willard John McArthur (1999) Abstract: Environmental historians have made fruitful endeavors in exploring the ways in which human communities modify the landscapes in which they live. However, nationalism is one area that has exhibited a tremendous influence on the course of modem history, yet has been little studied in its relationship to the environment. This thesis looks at the ways in which nationalism-a sense of connection to the larger nation— has influenced those modifications, and how those modifications have influenced and affected those making changes. This thesis looks to the early Mormon migrants to the West as a case study on how nationalism has influenced environmental change. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this argument relies on the work of intellectual historians of nationalism, environmental historians, geographers, and ecologists\biologists. Using these studies as a framework, this thesis posits a method for identifying nationalized landscapes: recognizing circumscribed landscapes, simplified environments, and lands that are connected spatial and temporally to the larger nation identifies a nationalized landscape. In particular, this thesis looks at fish, trees, and riparian zones as areas of change. Using the identifying markers of circumscription, simplification, and connection has uncovered that Mormons did indeed make changes in the landscape that were influenced by nationalism. These changes made to the land, influenced by nationalism, created a redesigned nature, that in turn influenced human relationships.

    Eugene H. & Waldo C. Perkins: Ute Perkins Stewardship 61 “A Room of Round Logs with a Dirt Roof”: Ute Perkins’ Stewardship to Look after Mormon Battalion Families Eugene H. Perkins & Waldo C. Perkins On 17 July1846, one day after Captain James Allen had mustered in the Mormon Battalion, U.S. Army of the West, Brigham Young called eighty- nine bishops1 to look after the wives and families of the Mormon Battalion.2 Among the group called were Ute Perkins (1816–1901), a thirty-year-old member of seven years, his uncles, William G. Perkins and John Vance, and his first cousin, Andrew H. Perkins. Until Nauvoo, the Church’s two general bishops, Bishop Newel K. Whitney in Kirtland and Bishop Edward Partridge in Missouri, bore as their major responsibility the challenge to care for the poor and needy. In Nauvoo, in addition to the general bishops, the Church initiated the prac- tice of assigning bishops to aid the poor within Nauvoo’s municipal wards— hence the beginnings of ward bishops. During the trek west, as the calling of these eighty-nine bishops shows, the commitment to calling local bishops to care for small membership groupings was underway and became enough of an established practice that in Utah it became standard Church administra- tive practice—a presiding bishopric at the general level and ward bishops at the local level.
