    July - August 2010 www.superbirdclub.com email: [email protected] Pete Hamilton Superbird Restoration Petty’s Garage in Level Cross North Carolina has unveiled their restoration of Pete Hamilton’s 1970 Daytona 500 winning Superbird race car. The car is owned by collector Todd Werner, who also owns a Petty 1971 Road Runner among quite a few other significant cars. At left in the group photo, you can see The King behind the car. Left of him is Dale Inman, and at the windshield pillar is Pete Hamilton crew chief, Richie Barsz. I am told that Richie was instrumental in visually identifying the car. Owner Todd Werner is second from left. There is not a lot of information about the history of the car that has been released publicly at this time. I am told that after 1970, the car was reportedly sold to privateer Doc Faustina , who entered it as a 1970 Road Runner in select Grand National races, s during 1971 and 1972. In later years, it was rebodied as a newer Charger and continued to race into the mid 1970’s. I hope to bring you more information about the car soon. At middle left, Richard is checking out the Maurice Petty built Hemi. You can see the car is still being lettered. Immediately after these photos were taken, the car was loaded up and headed for the Mopar Nationals in Columbus where it was on display in the Manufacturers Midway. Although it is derived from a case that related to military history, a discipline within history which suffers many of the problems that afflict automobile racing history, it seems to state one of the more serious problems with which historians must wrestle in automobile racing history. Once errors get disseminated into a variety of sources, primarily books, there is a tendency for these errors to take on a life of their own and continue to pop up years after they have been challenged and corrected. As always, our goal is to provide a fun filled weekend of racing for both the fans and competitors alike. Naturally, the fall colors and enthusiastic crowds are not too bad either. For all those who participated in the past, thank you for your patience and support of this unique racing festival. If this is your first time, we hope this event will meet all your expectations and will provide lots of good memories. Have Fun! Make Friends! Race Safe & Be Happy! GENERAL RACE PROCEDURES: 1) Cars will be lined up by qualifying, points or by a draw system. 2) When possible all races will be pre-staged on the backstretch of the quarter mile 3) This Speedway uses a “fail to tail” system on yellow flags, any cars involved (a spin to avoid or stopping is considered involved) will go to the rear of the field. 4) Any car causing two yellow flags in a race will be sent to the pits. 5) All officials’ decisions are final. 6) A car may be entered in only one division per day; only exception is the Double “O”. 7) Any additional cars advancing to any feature from semi is subject to adjusted payout. 8) Pitting: We will try to get all teams in and out as quickly as possible. Please be patient. 9) To maintain any starting position, race teams are required to help dry the track in the event of rain.
