Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine. -

A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr Introduction Over the past fifty years the guitar has had a very powerful influence on American music. Predominantly a rhythm instrument at the turn of the century, the guitar began to step out of the rhythm section in the 1930’s and 40’s and has maintained a dominant presence in every form of music from rock, to folk, to country, bluegrass, blues, and old- time. While Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and other pop icons of the 50’s and 60’s certainly played a large role in bolstering the guitar’s popularity, the man who has had the deepest, most enduring, and most profound influence on the way the acoustic flat top guitar is played as a lead instrument in folk, old-time, and bluegrass music today is Arthel "Doc" Watson. To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson records in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is a legend. However, Doc’s influence extends far beyond the small niche of guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero. To be recognized as a "national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, honored with the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton, and given an honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina calls for being more than a fine musician and entertainer. -

Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Connie Willis, June 2019 Connie Willis has won eleven Hugo Awards and seven Nebula Awards more major awards than any other writer—most recently the "Best Novel" Hugo and Nebula Awards for Blackout/All Clear (2010). She was inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Science Fiction Writers of America named her its 28th SFWA Grand Master in 2011. Wow! So many questions! I’m not sure I can answer all of them, but here goes. 1. Why writing? I don’t think any writer has a good answer for this. You don’t pick it--it picks you. I’ve loved books since I first discovered them--the first one I remember began, "There’s a cat in a hat in a ball in the hall," and I instantly knew, like Rudyard Kipling, that books held in them everything that would make me happy. When I learned to read, I saw that this was true, and I gobbled up LITTLE WOMEN and Gene Stratton Porter’s A GIRL OF THE LIMBERLOST and L. Frank Baum’s WIZARD OF OZ books and everything else I could get my hands on, which mostly meant the books at the public library, though the girl across the street loaned me Frances Hodgson Burnett’s A LITTLE PRINCESS and my great aunt left me Grace Livingston Hill’s THE WHITE FLOWER and one of my mother’s friends loaned me Valentine Davies’ A MIRACLE ON THIRTY-FOURTH STREET. Many of the books I read were had writers as characters--Jo March and Anne of Green Gables and Betsy of the BETSY, TACY, AND TIB books--and I wanted to be exactly like them, which to me meant not only writing books, but wearing long dresses, sitting in a garret reading and eating russet apples, and tying my hand-written manuscripts up with red ribbons. -

Itrsquo;s a very funny story, something like Thorne Smith updated. R. Martin. This volume was designed by John Coulthart, a well-known British graphic artist, illustrator, author and designer. It begins with a foreword by Jeff VanderMeer, is followed by an afterword by Ann VanderMeer, and is signed by both Jeff and Anne. The second volume is Fire Watch, Connie Willis’ 1982 Nebula, and 1983 Hugo award winning novelett e relating the experiences of a time-travelling historian who goes back to The Blitz in London, to participate in the fi re watch at St. Paul’s Cathedral. This volume of Fire Watch was designed by John Coulthart, a well-known British graphic artist, illustrator, author and designer. It begins with a foreword by James Patrick Kelly and is signed by Willis and Kelly. Both volumes will be released at Capclave 2010. These special books will initially only be avail- able to members of the convention. Purchases are limited to only one copy of each book per mem- ber. Interview The Quotidian Apocalypse and the Quixotic Cause: An Interview with Author Connie Willis1 Wendy Highby, Katherine Shull, and Emory Jay Trask ABSTRACT The writer Connie Willis lives in Greeley, Colorado, home to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). She is an alumna of UNC and has chosen to deposit her papers in its archives. A pre-eminent science fiction author, her clock- and calendar-defying tales of time travel have transported many fans and won numerous awards. Her stellar reputation in fandom and among librarians as a mentor, peer, and public intellectual is well-deserved and hard-earned. She gives generously of her time at conventions, conferences, and community events. We finally caught up with her in the latter days of Summer 2018, after the Locus Awards and the Westercon science fiction and fantasy convention, and interviewed her about her recent novella “I Met a Traveler in an Antique Land” (first appearing in Asimov’s Science Fiction in 2017 and later published by Subterranean Press in 2018). It concerns a disappearing Manhattan bookshop that may also be a harbor for endangered books. The story’s subject matter is of great relevance for archivists and librarians of the Anthropocene—as is the content of our conversation with Ms. Willis, which ranges from the insidious nature of censorship to the nobility of fighting for lost causes. 1 Portions of this interview were edited for clarity.
