Meso Cycle (BLOCK 6 Learning Objectives) – Possession games and practices to create overloads

The core of the team's success comes from their possession. Many teams see this battle won in the midfield department which is the ‘engine room’ and that games are won and lost on the domination of this area of the pitch. The aim of the players is to control the tempo of the game and create space to move the ball into good areas to create overloads . If the opportunity to recover the ball quickly is denied, the team will be patient and keep good possession of the ball and move it around to open up the opposition to create space and overloads again. It is of vital importance that the team without the ball is pressing at a high tempo to bring the best out of the team in possession. Key Learning Objectives – The players must understand the importance of keeping good possession of the football and when to attack space with and without the ball. They must also master the concept and importance of width and dispersal upon gaining possession.

Technical Learning objective – The ability of an individual and unit/team to keep good possession through various techniques such as movement and receiving skills. Tactical Learning objective - Effective possession by using the correct angles and distance of approach to receive and form an effective unit and system. Physiological Learning objective: Deceleration – The ability to increase speed and movement at the correct angles and distances to create time on the ball. Psychological Learning objective: Patience – Players must have good levels of patience and concentration so that they are difficult to beat as a unit.

01. DECISION PREPARING TO EXECUTE Ensure the distances needed to execute the turn are correct. You need to make sure that you’re not too close to the defender, but also not too far away. The following stage is dependant on whether you’re more comfortable with your right foot or your left foot. Shift your body to the right hand side of the ball if performing the turn with your right foot, or the left hand side of the ball if performing the turn with the left foot. 02. EXECUTION PLAN INTO ACTION Place the foot behind the ball making contact with the inside of the foot. 03. BALANCE CORRECT WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION Shift the body between the ball and defender and move the ball away, still keeping in contact with the ball. Get low for balance and the opportunity to push accelerate away (i.e. a sprinter’s start position in the the blocks) and use the arm to prevent the defender getting close to the ball. 04. MOVING AWAY SPEED AND CONTROL Take the ball away from the defender with the outside of the other foot. 05. NEXT DECISION END PRODUCT Now that the turn is complete, accelerate away and get your head up to access the space you’ve created and make your next decision. What you choose to do next could well be determined by one of our future step-by-step guides, so make sure you pick up every edition of ‘The One And Only’ this season for a complete guide on how to improve your skill set.

01. THE APPROACH Keep the ball close to your body whilst dribbling towards your opponent. Small touches are important at this stage. 02. THE DUMMY It is important that you perform the turn at the correct and realistic distance away from your opponent(s). Place your non-kicking foot at the side of the ball and pretend to pass/shoot/ cross with your kicking foot.It is vital that this ‘dummy’ is performed at high speed in order to fool the opponent(s). 03. THE EXECUTION Instead of passing/ shooting/crossing you need to flick the ball with the inside of what would be your kicking foot touching the ball past the heel of your non-kicking foot. As you do this, you need to position your body in between the ball and the opponent(s) and get low in order to protect the ball, maintain balance, spring up and move away from your opponent(s) quickly. 04. END PRODUCT Move the ball away as you turn and use your arm to keep the opponent(s) away from the ball. Assess the space by looking up and then make your next decision (pass/ cross/shoot?).

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS STOP START TURN GETTING STARTED The Stop Start Turn is a foot skill that can be used at any time when you have possession of the ball, but it is meant to be used at a specific time. The best situation in which to use this skill is where you cannot go forward any further because you are either at the edge of the field or an opponent is blocking you. It is a simple way to stop the ball and go in the other direction.

4 1 2 3

5

01. THE APPROACH It is important at this stage of the turn to have full control of the ball. To ensure this you need to dribble with the ball close to your body and to keep assessing the space in front of you. 02. THE DECISION AND EXECUTION Your reason for you to execute The Stop Step Turn will be determined by your decision to move the ball in the opposite direction. Firstly you need to stop the ball at the correct distance away from your opponent by putting the sole of your foot on the ball. 03. PROTECTING THE BALL Once you have stopped the ball, you then need to quickly step over the ball so that your body is in between the ball and your opponent. It is important that you position your body low against the opponent and use your arm to enable you to spring away, to ensure good balance and to stop the opponent reaching the ball. 04. MOVING AWAY Using your arm to push away from the opponent (without conceding a foul) you then need to touch the ball away using the outside of the nearest foot to the ball. This needs to be done at speed to ensure your opponent does not pinch the ball 05. NEXT DECISION Once you have moved the ball away it is important that you assess the space quickly by looking around and then make your next decision Pass, shoot, dribble, cross etc. Oldham Athletic Academy Foundation Phase Coaching Curriculum (Must all include finishing practices & SSG.From week 24 introduce the 4-ball receiving work.15 mins once a week)

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS SCISSOR DRIBBLE GETTING STARTED The scissors dribble is equally effective as it is spectacular and hard to counter by the opposing defender. It involves moving one foot over the ball in a quick motion, allowing your entire body weight to press on this foot, then immediately cutting the ball with the outside of your other foot and accelerating. In order for it to be effective, the scissors dribble must be done quickly and it’s usually more efficient against defenders that stay ‘on guard’, rather than a defender that attacks you decisively.

1 2 3 4

5

01. THE APPROACH For this skill it is important that you have close control of the ball to start with. 02. THE ‘DUMMY’ Upon approaching the opponent you step over the ball with one leg, throwing your body weight onto that foot – this must be done quickly as to make your opponent think you are moving the ball away. 03. THE EXECUTION As the opponent moves slightly to the side, you quickly shift your weight the other way. 04. BEAT THE PLAYER Using the outside of the other foot, you push the ball past the opponent. This needs to be done at the correct distance away so that the opponent doesn’t pinch the ball. 05. NEXT DECISION You now quickly accelerate into the space, leaving your opponent behind, read to pass, cross, shoot etc.

Oldham Athletic Academy Foundation Phase Coaching Curriculum (Must all include finishing practices & SSG.From week 24 introduce the 4-ball receiving work.15 mins once a week)

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS INSIDE TO OUTSIDE DRIBBLE GETTING STARTED This form of dribbling is often seen by wingers in the Championship and is an effective way of beating a defender. Players are required to lightly knock the ball inside of their body with the inside of their foot and then quickly push the ball out with the outside of their foot. Following this fancy footwork, accelerate past your marker, who will be caught on the back foot and you will then gain more space to play into. For this trick is often used when a defender is facing you standing still or is caught flat on his heels or tracking backwards.

1 2 3 4

5

01. STAGE ONE Ensure that the ball is close to your body as you dribble in order to keep the ball under control. 02. THE ‘DUMMY’ PART 1 As you get closer to your opponent touch the ball across your body with the inside of your foot to shift your opponent to the side. 03. THE ‘DUMMY’ PART 2 You then need to then move your body to the same side that you have moved the ball and then quickly move the ball with the outside of the same foot into the space vacated by your opponent. 04. BEATING THE OPPONENT In order to beat your opponent you need to move the ball with a bigger touch and then quickly move your body in between the your opponent and the ball to ensure they don’t pinch the ball from you. 05. END PRODUCT It is important that once you have moved past your opponent that you accelerate away and then make your next decision (pass/shoot/ cross/dribble).

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS THE ZIDANE DRIBBLE GETTING STARTED Zinedine Zidane with ‘The Zidane Dribble’. The former Juventus and Bordeaux midfielder was renowned for his spectacular strikes and pinpoint passing but his dribbling ability was equally special, especially for a 6’1” tall player. His exceptional balance, touch and control made gliding past defenders easy for the man nicknamed ‘Zizou’ and all three attributes are crucial to the success of this trick.

01. STAGE ONE Ensure that the ball is close to your body as you dribble, in order to keep the ball under control. 02. THE ‘EXECUTION’ PART’ 1 As you approach your opponent, stop the ball with the sole of your foot whilst turning to shield the ball from your opponent. 03. THE ‘EXECUTION’ PART 2 Move the ball away from your opponent with the sole of your foot to your left foot, and then drag the ball past your opponent ensuring that you protect the ball. 04. THE ‘EXECUTION’ PART 3 As the ball is moved away from your opponent turn your body (keeping your back to the opponent). 05. END PRODUCT Accelerate away from your opponent and then make your next decision (Pass/ shoot/cross/dribble).

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS DRAG BACK TURN GETTING STARTED We continue our step-by-step guide with instructions on how to master a trick that will help you to create space from a game situation in which it may appear that a defender is blocking your route.

3 4 1 2

5

01 THE APPROACH It is important at this stage of the turn to keep the ball close to your body using lots of touches of the ball. 02. THE DUMMY As you approach your opponent it is time to make a decision on which turn to perform. It may be that you can’t dribble or pass the ball the way you are facing, so you must turn to keep possession of the ball. 03. THE EXECUTION You firstly need to position your body in between the ball and your opponent. Secondly, place the furthest foot away from the opponent on top of the ball...... then, drag the ball across your body (turn by keeping your back facing your opponent) so that you end up facing the opposite direction. 04. PROTECTING THE BALL It is important that you don’t lose the ball. You therefore need to place your body in between the ball and the opponent. Take the ball away using the outside of the same foot you performed the turn with. NB. It is also important that you position yourself low in the turn in order to maintain balance and to enable you to accelerate away. 05. NEXT DECISION Once you have turned and taken the ball away from your opponent, you now need to ensure you keep possession of the ball, by passing, dribbling or by creating an opportunity

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS DEFENDING ONE v ONE GETTING STARTED It is important to be able to defend as an individual. You don’t always need to tackle an opponent to dispossess them or slow their progress. Mastering the technique of defending one v one, sometimes known as ‘jockeying’, denies your opponent time and space, and it’s a good tactic to allow your team-mates to get back into position. 1

1 2 3

STAGE ONE Adopt an almost side-on position, but with your shoulders opened out slightly so that you can provide a barrier to your opponent. This will also allow you to see them in front of you. If you keep your knees slightly bent, with your weight on the front of your feet, then you’ll find it easier to change direction as you move backwards. STAGE TWO If you can win the ball - win it. If you can’t you need to force the attacker to go in the direction you want them to go. STAGE THREE Be patient and don’t jump into the tackle as the attacker may skip past you. When the opportunity

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS THE BLOCK TACKLE GETTING STARTED Whatever your position you need to be able to tackle! If you team is not in possession of the ball then it is crucial to get it back. There are many different ways to achieve this, but the block tackle is the best and most common method. 2

1 2 3

STAGE ONE Get to your opponent quickly to deny them time and space on the ball. Don't commit yourself too quickly or you will foul them or be easy to beat. Sometimes just by putting your opponent under pressure will force them into making a mistake. STAGE TWO When you think you can win the ball, your weight should move forward as you prepare to tackle with the inside of your foot. This will probably be just as your opponent looks to either pass the ball or knock it past you. STAGE THREE If the ball becomes stuck between yours and your opponents feet then put your foot under the ball to lift it away. Make sure you keep your ankle and leg firm throughout the tackle. You are much more likely to get injured if you are not properly committed to the challenge. Oldham Athletic Academy Foundation Phase Coaching Curriculum (Must all include finishing practices & SSG.From week 24 introduce the 4-ball receiving work.15 mins once a week)

SKILLS AND TOP TIPS Maradonna Turn Where you begin the turn is important. Too close and the opponent can step in and gain control of the ball. Too far and the turn is not utilized at the right time and again the opponent can step in and gain control. Practice it slowly using your planting foot as you make the turn. Gradually increase your speed and if you’re comfortable with the turn, you should be able to do it without the need to plant your foot first when making the turn. Below is a video example:

1 2 3

Step 1 Dribble the ball at an angle toward the opponent. In this example, we are using the left foot for the counter clockwise spin with the ball. So the approach angle is toward the left side of the opponent. When you’re ready to make the turn, stop the ball with your right foot and drag the ball back Step 2 Start your counter clockwise spin. At this point, your body will be in between the ball and the opponent, which makes it difficult for the opponent to see or easily gain control of the ball. Step 3 Use your left foot to roll the ball away from the opponent and continue your run.

Step 1 Roll the football sideward's across the front of you then step over the ball (I wouldn't roll very quick but don't roll it slow either.) Step 2 Next, you have to stretch your stronger foot (the foot you kick with) behind your non-kicking foot and try and catch the ball with your laces or where your laces would be Step 3 Then, with the inside of your non-kicking foot, pass the ball slightly to your kicking foot. (You have to do this switching feet until the next time you get to your kicking foot,) then, without touching the ball with the inside of your foot, kind of do a step over and catch the ball
